Skycat's Conditioning Chapter

Recommended Posts

Lots of lads on here lately asking for info regarding getting their dogs fighting fit for the approaching season....they'd do no better than reading Penny Taylor's chapter on 'Conditioning' from her Running Dog Maintenance book....this is an in excellent piece and would, I'm sure benefit novices as well as the more seasoned dog men....

I'm sure Penny won't mind adding it to this thread as she is always helpful and has shared this info with many in the past....also be good if a mod could pin this to make it easily accessible to all.....

Swimming in conjunction with normal biking mooching is a brilliant way of keeping a dog fit,I was told at a hydro centre 1 minute of swimming equals a mile of running plus its totally body stress free

Its important that new comers to the lurcher game get some good basic advice in the first instance as this is what usually sticks, you only have to look at the Plummer followers back along to see this

Time to start dropping hints to the wife to get me this for xmas. I got rid of me books a while ago an have never gave them a second thought to be honest, I think I'll try this one tho, as others have said she talks a lot of sense. Well done for putting the chapter on here Penny, too many pen merchants in it only for the money imho...

It's an excellent book for those who work their dogs.

Packed with hands on tips ,what makes it particularly invaluable , is that is entirely designed by some one who not only works their dogs , but is written expressly for those who do the same.

Couched in simple ,down to earth language that covers just about every situation a working dog owner is likely to encounter

Penny's success in coursing competitions in a Fens club pre- ban illustrated to those of us who saw her dogs run that she not only knew what she was doing , but was able to consistantly get the best out of her dogs.

Since those days she has added more knowledge , gleaned from quizzing good vets, and combined these with her own experiences in the field

Garry Dickinson pays a fulsome tribute to her condiitoning expertise in Darcy's excellent ",A Passion For Coursing".

I recommend Penny's " Running Dog Maintenance", unreservedly to all working dog owners and most particularly to lurcher and sighthound owners

just read that conditioning chapter and i must say im impressed an will be telling the wife and not hinting lol Penny can i ask, do you use a magbox or anything like mills or hydropherapy on the dogs?

Thanks for the kind comments: I could have made that book three, if not four times as long. Even now, I keep thinking that I should have put x, y or z in it: But I can't remember exactly what is in there and isn't. I haven't read it recently. When you do a book like that the last thing you want to do is read it again .... for a very long time :tongue2::laugh: My publisher, not knowing the rather niche market I was aiming at, decided in his infinite wisdom to get bloody thousands printed  So I guess it will be a long time before there is a second edition, one in which I could rectify any omissions such as running machines and hydrotherapy, though swimming is definitely recommended in it.
