Collie Greyhound

Not to turn this in to a Hancock hating spree or anything but how many pups does he sell in a year? There seems to be a few about but not as many as I would imagine for a commercial business... Like the look of that one rake about !

I've ran 3/4 breds...one of the best dogs I ever had was a Hancock 3/4 by Taffy away back in the mid 1980s...had some great days and nights...had stamina limits though....greyhoundy feet and was hard

I got a 5/8 grey 3/8 collie from 2 hancock dogs, though not directly from his yard............she's been a honest bitch over the years, switched right on to the ferreting game, a great "companion" dog

Finn my first x collie/grey...   Done all I have asked....looking forward to winter.....

He does a few, Most of his dogs actually go to pet homes I reckon.

He`s a dog breeder, out and out, But the bottom line is, if you want a collie x and want to be certain of what your getting, then you could do worse than Hancock.

His dogs looked well and his pace looked clean. I`ve seen a few that have done seriously well from his lines as well.

Must admit.

I have looked on his web page in the past and the pups and adult dogs look healthy.

I would be more tempted to get a Hancock blooded dog of working lads rather that for him himself.

Seen a few type ratcher lurchers too . They were decent made animals that filled a freezer or two !!

Although I've always preferred a dog favouring the collie etc side, I have to admit that one of the best dogs I ever met was 3/4 greyhound 1/4 collie. He'd knock over rabbits all day long while waiting for his main job of waiting for something bigger to turn up. His owner used to get the paper boy to pick him up at the beginning of his round and road walk him as part of his paper round...lovely, friendly, easy going dog.

Ironically, he was almost exactly the same yet completely opposite to the dog I had at the same time; breeding wise. Both were Hancock bred but mine was Richard x Linnet ie 3/4 Richard 1/4 Sally, while his was Taffy x Sally ie 1/4 Richard 3/4 Sally.

I looked on there the other day and thought the pups looked little on the lean side, and by their eyes a bit unsocialised,

Reckon a bit of raw meat /butchers waste would help.

Anyone know how many litters are on the ground at the same time?

They are fed on shit mate fishmeal based dry food. I always laugh when I hear running dog owners say "I went to Hancock becuase at least I know exactly what I'm getting".yes you might be getting a genuine colliex but who knows what badhabits are waiting to surface yapping, running quarry but not picking it up,ect if the parents aren't tested and are only bred for looks. Iveseen some very nice workers from hancock dogs bit it's lining the pockets of a puppy peddler that puts me off most of all.

How about other breeders of the collie lines?

James is a name I have heard and seen some nice stuff off.

What would be the way to start a line off from scratch?..

2 collies and 2 greys is a start.
1 collie and 2 Grey's would be a better start imo

2 greys a border and a beardie of working type, would be good if you was young, rich etc etc.

personally, i like the first cross better than a 3/4. a lot of 3/4s come out just too greyhoundy, but i have seen a couple which turned out like a big strong super fast first cross and they were awesome. seen very good border and beardie first crosses, but the best all-rounder i've ever seen was a border-beardie (hancocks mr jones) half cross, absolutely superb bitch. the best ferreting dog ive ever watched, would take birds anddeer with ease (up to fallow doe size) and was a tolerable hare courser, not just hunted up but with a fair slip. great nose and feet, and virtually indestructible. ive also seen some excellent collie grey X collie grey, but its a bit pot luck, the litters can be variable and i have seen almost pure collies from this breeding. it needs to be taken forward for a few generations before the consistency comes into the breeding.

One from about 30 years ago, Richard Jones to an Irish grey called Jade.

Cheers, D.
