Kay 3,709
cant smell any worse than doing it in bed & then have someone hold your head under the covers You poor innocent thing. Is THAT why you think we do it? well i dont miss that either
low plains drifter 11,302
Why does it smell different when you flatulate in the bath.. ..serious question by the way.. Not scouring your carcass with jeyes fluid are you or is it just the old fairy liquid
Malt 379
As it happens Malt, I've just been pondering on the subject further................ If we assume a fart is roughly equally dispersive in three dimensional space (like a growing balloon) and human smell is proportional to chemical concentration then the strength of smell should follow the inverse square law.......... basically if you double the distance the strength is quartered. So assuming farting in the bath reduces the distance of necessary dispersion by half it increases the strength by a factor of four! Hence such a significant and noticeable effect. This is the beginning of a peer reviewed paper I feel! What about atmospheric conditions? The air in a bathroom will inevitably be humid when you're having a bath, so will that further hamper dispersion of the fart? Also, when I followed the hounds a few years back, the old boys used to reckon a bit of moisture in the air was really good for scent, so maybe maybe there's a biological factor to add when discussing why a fart smells worse in the bath as well as a physics one? I'm vaguely recaling something about water holding scent for longer but I can't remember why.................... the water possibly absorbes/adsorbs 'stink' molecules. This would indeed reduce the rate of dispersion, but I can't see how it would increase strength of stink, it would just increase the fart to smell (FtS) time...................... Deffinately gonna be biological factors though Malt.

Ah, so an increase in the affective number of stink molecules................... possibly, I really couldn't say though, we're firmly in the realms of biochemistry now! Sensitivity to odours varies with air temperature and humidity, and with state of health; warm moist air carries more volatile chemicals than cold dry air. http://www.drlockie.com/article_disease_view.fcm?articleid=13185&subsite=

Malt 379
http://www.extension.iastate.edu/Publications/PM1963C.pdf As perceived by humans, odors have five basic properties that can be quantified: 1) intensity, 2) degree of Weather (temperature, humidity, wind direction) affects the volatility of compounds, preventing or enhancing movement into the gaseous phase where an odor can be dispersed downwind. I can vouch that this theory also applies to showers - as I discovered whilst scrubbing at the muddy knees of one of my kids who thought it would be funny to trump whilst I was in the general vicinity of their nether regions. I nearly fainted.
