i think this is about how your interpret the pups growling, many will say that the pup is trying it on and discipline it ,wrongly in my view or is the pup showing fear either of you or your hand,

Some cracking posts in this thread and everyone does things their own way. I never hit a dog for anything except for in-appropriate agression, be that to humans, other dogs or whatever.......jmho, bu

Quite common for dogs to get possessive over food.

I would take it off the dog, and wait a few mins before giving it back, and then only when the dogs is calm.

And keep doing that randomly until the problem stops.

This has always worked for me, but others on here disagree, so await more comments too, and choose a method.

just need a bit of advise is it normal for a fifteen week old pup to growl if you put your hand near its dish, had dogs for a fair few years and never come across this with any of my dogs.

well there all diffrernt mate, some are soft some are not. .Why not make him wait for his food, then give it. As long as the pup knows when you take the bowl away, it will get it back you should have no probs. Ikeep mine outside when i put the food down i leve them alone, but if in the house prob differnt if you got kids about, so just do the above .!!

Don't confront the pup with violence or taking its food away from it. Saluki types are notoriously possessive, and if you react to its growls antagonistically, or by taking its food away, its weird little Saluki brain will think there's even more reason to defend its food against you.

Much better to put the empty bowl on the ground in front of the pup, make it sit, then put a tiny bit of food into the bowl. Let it eat that, make it sit again, put a bit more food in, and so on until it has eaten all its food. That way the pup learns that you being near its food is only a good thing, that you are only there to put more food in, not take it away.

Sure, you have to teach the pup to respect you and commands, but the motto should be 'softly, softly' with these sort of dogs, especially when you are trying to build a good working bond with the pup. At the moment it simply sees your presence as a threat, and you need to change that attitude round. You can only do that by putting yourself in the pup's place, letting it know that you are a provider, not a taker away.

its a problem i have never encountered and the reason for it is that a dog should have no fear with you been in his space or him in yours for working purposes, there must be trust so i work on hand feeding from the puppy stage not treats all his grub, no bowl the bowl only promotes possessiveness in a pup where trust hasn't been built , that way the hand that feeds is greeted in the same manner when also taking bunnies from the pup in time,

best of luck with the pup bud you can dominate him and he'll stop or you can develop an understanding and he'll stop too , both work, your call .

I fed mine out of my hand soon stopped it, a dog I rescued would show its teeth when I went any where near!! So I put the bowl on the floor! Walked towards the dog, it started to growl so stood over the bowl until the dog walked away!! Repeated this for a few weeks, in the end would share her food with other dogs! No need to hit the dog just claim the space!!!

i found a pup recently pretty much starving on the road recently.it was very possesive of food,as anyone would be in its situation,i also used the method of taking the food away and putting it back(it was fairly reluctent)but it has worked.
