Guest born to run1083
Bitch im running now 3/4 grey 1/4 collie She looks a nice sort mate and i hope she is doing well for you. Can i ask, why did you have an hancock? and not one from proven parents, there are so many about. Aye but most litters are all called for before the bitch even drops. So most litter don't even surface. Look back on here for how many litters of just collie and grey are in a dog i'l dout your find many. Unfortunately if you can't find a pup alot of people resort to hancock as a last choice. Altho a peddler he knows genetics very well and always seems to throw a dog with a good constitution. wuyang 513
Had two, but told myself im not getting another from a puppy farmer...in the end i did buy another pup this year privately, but i have come full circle and would have another off him. Why, well i met a couple of decent blokes breeding for the right reasons, but the majority were just liars. My first off him was about 20 years ago, beardie/border mix, the last was border collie/greyhound, both half crosses. Both good dogs, the beardie/border was a big dog and his enthusiasm to work was faultless, very good alrounder and the most laidback house dog ive owned, but my god could he find foxes...., funny thing was i only ever bothered with rabbits. My other bitch off him is now ten, she's been a good dog, but if if theres not much happening she wants to play, whereas the other i had would hunt for a scent no matter what and he would also hunt a good distance from me unlike her. This seems to be a common thing with collies in general though, some pure working collies lose interest when not much is happening, whereas some just persit. 1 Quote Link to post
birddog 1,354
i've got one who does everything needed of her, i've seen a few and most were good dogs especially at the rabbiting game, the hancock's seem to know their stuff and have always been polite and reasonable anytime i've spoken to them, as for the often used peddler bit as far as i know they put one wee ad in one magazine a week, they don't push a type on a customer that's unsuitable, they rely on reputation and customers contacting them, they don't go around 'peddling' their stock, in my eyes that's hardly adding up to a peddler. they've bred hundreds of litters and reared thousands of pups, so does joe bloggs along the road however well intended breeding worker to worker (whatever their breeding and genetics are or are purported to be) give his pups as good a start? surely there are far worse and amoral things people do to make a living? 2 Quote Link to post
boyo 1,398
if you want a collie greyhound at least of him you know thats what you are getting and been around in buisness a long long time so he has got to be doing something right .like any buisness you tend to hear the moaners more than the people who have been pleased with their purchase . 1 Quote Link to post

Not in the early days they must have been the most publisised lurcher thats ever been bred. 1 Quote Link to post
graham4877 1,181
I like it how a lad can have a litter or two in same year say from his lurcher and a terrier both working that he keeps a pup from each and other jump on him calling a peddler puppy farmer,, but hadcock gets away with it all because they have one or mate dose and its a good worker ....LOL conditions and standers them dog's are kept in.. Rake aboot 4,936
I`m going to partly agree here. I got the dog cause I liked the look of the pup and he was just what I wanted, also because Whin had a Hancock years back and I loved the way she worked. The type that would suit me fine. When I went down I liked the Hancocks, David was a nice bloke and Sally was nice as well. They use ex track greyhound bitches (worked ? make you`re own mind up) I hadn`t been there for 20 yrs or so and obviously it`s a whole new place. The dogs seemd not too badly kept. Maybe I would have kept some of the runs cleaner and they never had hundreds of pups etc, maybe 20 all in at various ages but mostly all were pre booked. My pup was in not too bad nick, I wormed him and put some weight on him , so maybe that could have been better, but I am happy with what I got, and judging by reactions to him, other folk like Jakey boy as well. Pays yer money makes yer choice. At the end of the day, if nobody was happy with the dogs, he`d of went under years ago. One thing I do hear a lot though is folk judging ALL Hancock dogs based on the ONE that they have seen. Bit stupid really, I`ve seen litters where one turns out shit but the rest were great, does that make that breeding a failure !?? no didnae think so. ATB 2 Quote Link to post

ATB i agree with loads there mate and having seen him a few times now he is a cracker but on your last line........ive seen litters where only one or two turn out great and the mating gets repeated because it's deemed a success.....but hey their worker to worker / line bred or whatever term is in fashion 1 Quote Link to post
Rake aboot 4,936
Exactely Birddog Theres some amount of "worker to worker " utter,,shite bred, but hey ho, thats acceptable,, seemingly. Certainly in the Spaniel world haha, 1 Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
All down to personal opinion, i dont doubt with the myriad of litters born over the last 25 years there will be some crackers, BUT personally i would rather increase my chances of geting a decent working dog by getting one from tested parents. There are far too many lurchers being bred everywhere nowadays and commercial breeders are only helping the problem, along with the choppers and changers, fly by nights and messers. The only thing with Hancock is you know what your getting breeding wise, BUT i'd rather find a litter from worked stock than line the pockets of somebody who makes a living selling puppies, its goes aganst my own ethos...........
