Dare i say it but i'd rather cross a top draw shepherd with a top draw coursing bitch rather than a greyhound, but not many owners of either a top draw working shepherd or top draw coursing bitch would be too enthusiasstic about such a mating

Edited to add apologies for diverting the thread

Were they not prone to giving tongue though, then Simo, the Shepherds?

Cheers, D.

Fair enough but each to their own. Never would consider it myself though but I wouldn't consider myself a decent trainer of dogs. Average yes, conditioning maybe but that other stuff :icon_redface:

simoman, in your opinion what do then dogs bring to the table that is different to other breeds?? they interest me, but never seen any work so i am all new to them. it would be great to hear some reviews from them by people who own these dogs.

The ones i kept had very high drive Jamie, and just as importantly tested hips, the breed average was 19, mine were 4. Mine had amazing noses, the black one was a competition dog and we won organised comps against the bloodhound club of GB and won over 3 mile competition tracks. He was trained to ignore all ground game and scent but his son, in the photo with him i actually worked on the lamp, a couple of members on here saw him work, he used his nose to good effect when bushing and pegging pheasants and i'd say he had more wind than some of my lurchers  Nice tight feet, very trainable, biddable and not much of a back foot ;) Both dogs were capable of 14ft long jump, 7 scale and clearing five bar gates.

On the negative side, they aren't dogs that can just sit in a kennel with no stimulation, they need a lot of exercise and mine also tended to be one man dogs who boned closely with me, not a problem for me as my dogs go nowhere but could be a negative point with todays chop and change knob(not you fellas).

nice type those simo , and when xst to the right grey have sen scale gates retrieving the red coat . atb bunnys

I'd agree HM, collie has been added in large ammounts before and again just recently and is getting results, same as greyhound and Moscow has added bull to his, (nothing new here either) with good results. It's the quality of the blood used that makes the difference.

Andy and his lads know what they want from their dogs as does Moscow. Both giving 'em enough real graft to know and both will admit what has worked and what hasn't.

From sitting here reading, what I see is two slighty different directions but both with the same aims. To produce a quality lamp dog, to run 'their' chosen quarry, using predominantly proven blood from the past.

As much as I like a weirdo cross, I recon adding to much different blood will do the line no favours, if it ain't broke..an all that...

All that i'd add is, that it's the bitches that you have to keep an eye out for, make sure there are enough well bred and well grafted bitches to keep a close line running smooth.

for what its worth,i would of kepted the line pure and added nothing, the dogs had blow and speed, and could do it every night, what more do you need in a lamping dog.
