A driver said yesterday the problem is that agencies are hiring guys without the proper qualifications, paying less so getting most of the jobs from the bigger oil companies.

I think they're using h+s as a cover, they're really just worried about the influx of underqualified drivers so want the bar set a bit higher.

Taken from comments in the Daily Telegraph.

"Firstly I'd like to “come out” and admit that I'm a tanker driver. No. I don't earn 45K / year for a 37 hour week, but if I ever find out where that contract is, rest assured, I'll be applying for it. My reasons for writing this are purely to give the point of view of the average guy who just happens to be employed to deliver fuel in the UK.Much of the Governments disagreement with my Union and ultimately, therefore, with me, seems to centre on the myth that Unite is engineering this dispute and that somehow they have coerced, cajoled or otherwise coaxed me into taking strike action for their own beastly ends of bringing down the Coalition Government. This is simply untrue and, to be quite honest, rather insulting. The sector of Unite that I belong to is governed by the Oil Trades Committee. A rather grand title for a democratically elected body made up of, guess who?, yes, it's tanker drivers just like me. They have responded only to the concerns raised by the members. Len McCluskey didn't tell me what to vote for, what to think or what action to take, I told him what I wanted via the Oil Trades Committee. So exactly what are the concerns I'm talking about. One thing it isn't about is asking for any more money, which is why I found it strange that our beloved and unbiased BBC saw fit to tell the world what I earn and even then couldn't be bothered to find out if it was factual.Speaking for myself, safety and training are the paramount issues I want to see addressed. At the moment, this is all controlled by the hauliers under the direction of the oil companies. I don't really consider that a good idea, when you have hauliers desperately trying to cut costs to gain or keep contracts from companies with, let's face it, not particularly good records when it comes to safety. To qualify that, I'd remind you of Piper Alpha, Buncefield, The Gulf of Mexico and so on. As for environmental safety, if you want to see how responsible these companies really are, just Google images of the Niger Delta where, according to some estimates, the equivalent of the Exxon Valdiz spill has been poured into it every year for the past 50 years. In order to maintain and preferably raise standards of safety and training, I believe that we need a Government backed accreditation body that is completely independent of these companies to oversee qualifications within our industry.Secondly, contracts are usually awarded to hauliers on 3 or 5 year terms. I want to ensure that when my existing employer loses their contract, which they undoubtedly will at some point, my pension is safe. I want a pension that can be transported to my new employer and not have to be frozen. I know drivers in this industry who have amassed six pensions whilst delivering on behalf of the same fuel company! I'm only asking for a little dignity upon retirement. Is it wrong to expect this from companies that make many billions of pounds in profits.Thirdly, I'm a bit disheartened to see a “good job” being decimated by undue pressures being put on drivers to complete all their deliveries or take a financial penalty or even undergo the humiliation of disciplinary procedures for failing to do so most often for genuine reasons. I'm fed up with contracted hauliers trying to cut costs by attacking the only thing they can, that's me and my terms and conditions of employment and those of the many others just like me in this industry. I'm fed up with seeing cut-price contractors getting a foothold by attacking all those things mentioned above, with the endorsement of the oil companies. Right now, the Hauliers that brag of their high wages and wonderful terms of employment are introducing the “white fleets” on lower wages, different terms and conditions of employment, (for different read lesser), and lower standards all round. Do I want to see these drivers out of work?, absolutely not. I want to see the oil companies impose a set of minimum standards for the employment of all fuel tanker drivers working on their behalf and let's be honest here, it's not like they can't afford it, is it? All of these costs are just a minuscule drop in the large ocean of massive profits. On a final note, Mr Cameron doesn't want me to strike. Well, I don't want to either, but I will if my employers won't listen to what I have to say. By the way, Mr Cameron, when you said that this dispute was “unjustifed”, I'd like to remind you that 74% of us said “yes”. If I remember rightly, you're governing this country with only 36% of the national vote. Which of us really has the justification to speak out?"
