Shooting my new 22 rimfire rifle - advice

I have just bought my first rifle a brand new Weihrauch HW60J. I have been given conflicting advice about using it and wanted some opinions.

 

The shop I bought it from advised me as follows. When I first use it I should give it a quick clean through with a patch after every round for up to the first 150 rounds through it. So fire, clean, fire, clean up to 150 times. This gradual wearing in process will help with accuracy

 

My friend who has been shooting for years said this is rubbish and just shoot the rifle.

 

I am unsure what to do. On the one hand I do not want to do anything to effect the rifles accuracy but on the other hand its going to take forever to get through 150 rounds if I have to clean between each one

If its a .22lr and you're only shooting standard subsonic lead bullets, quite frankly I wouldn't worry too much about cleaning the barrel.

That's more for metal jacketed bullets.

So your friend is right - just shoot and enjoy, but give the blueing a wipe down with an oily rag to protect it and keep it shiny

On my HW60 J (HMR) I used walnut oil on the stock to give it extra protection and shine with a couple of coats.

Clean the factory grease out of the barrel and just shoot it. If accuracy ever goes off in the future then clean it again. The shops advice is more applicable to cf not rf, though several eminent peeps dispute that idea as well. Don't use stingers through a tight match chamber as they are a tad longer in the case than normal .22lr. Yours may have a match chamber I don't know.

if lead subs clean then shoot.if stingers you will have to shoot the barrel in.still would only take 6 shots to shoot in.

If you clean it that often you will more than likley do more damage to the bore than any thing, I would give it a clean and shoot it . If you are going to a range and plan on zaping off loads I would clean 20 then say 50 and just now and then. Enjoy your new gun .

Just to prove i am a novice what are stingers? I just googled it and found the answer

As for shooting in and cleaning,,, clean before shooting and DRY dont leave oil or solvent in the bore,,, fire 2 or 3 then a wipe out, wipe again after 20/25 then leave it alone,,,,,, if you clean them too much every First shot is in a cold bore, r/fs are like cast lead pistol bullets and do leave a trace of lub in the bore,,, this is good stops it rusting and every shot is from the same bore. Stinger,,, after using stinger i do scrub the bore,,, stingers have a copper coat on them that will in time foul the bore, its not a jacket like c/fs but more like copper plateing so does rub off in the barrel.

 

I always found Stingers to be some what inconsistant,,,, Remington yellow jackets are far better

Never found Stingers or any HV .22LR to be much cop.

 

Certainly not much use longer range with the accuracy I witnessed.

my brno .22 rimfire must have had over 10 000 rounds through it and i have never cleaned the bore. Point of impact never changes and we're popping rabbits with it at 30 to 70 yards all night long.
