I caught 48 moles on my parents small holding last year so there are plenty of old runs. It is a cider orchard and two adjacent fields which have sheep on them, but not currently.

I get moles visiting now and again following the clearance of them last year, it was badly infested.

The moles are after the manure fed worms under the grass.

This particular one has been tricky.

Tumps in three places in the one field so I set Talpex around all of them.

The mole made tumps in front of two of the Talpex but not triggering them, so I changed to duffus for these two.

One duffus was triggered this morning but no mole and there were more tumps, some in existing areas and a couple of small tumps.

I put some more traps down and whilst doing so the soil was moving in front of one of the duffus with a mole under it which stopped when I stepped nearer.

I will trap it but usually the moles are easy to trap.

I am surprised and annoyed by its behaviour.

I set some traps in deeper runs this morning which may do the trick and a couple in the hedge line as well.

I would leave it a couple of days and return being doubly careful of how you are setting up.

No light, no grass or surface material it's wised up to to you.

If you can locate the fortress, its nest, then that will have its main runs.

Looks like you'll have to work for this one!

If you can get there around 10ish or a bit earlier you should see it pushing up fresh soil wait until it has pushed three times then let it have 36grams of number six into the mole hill base this will almost definately ruin its day.

Worth a thought. No 12G but a 243 :D

The traps maybe going off due its pushing soil infornt off him, and the soil hes pushing is setting the trap off, dig the hole for the traps a little deeper so tht any soil will fall down under the trap and the trap is floating, also rub a worm onto the trigger plate to bait the trap, make sure no little can get into the tunnel and make sure the traps have no scent on them rub the trap with earth before hand

Hello to the mole catchers. I only recently discovered these forums & Hunting Life. Lots of interesting stuff posted on here.
Part of my duties as a maintenance man on a private estate is pest control and that's how I got into mole catching. I'd done plenty of rats, mice, wasps and ants etc before the mole hills started bubbling up, so I found an old Duffus in a drawer and went from there. I started doing private mole jobs last year - all gardens so far - and have started generating a useful 2nd income out of it. Just beer money at the moment but more than enough for a few pints. I like the work and am fascinated by all the different traps and their suitability to different situations. I use a lot of Traplines and I'd be interested to have other opinions on them - the good, the bad and the ugly if you like. Although I carry Duffus and Talpex, I've gotten into the bad habit of defaulting to tlines which has revealed that certain moles won't have anything to do with them - they seem to just chuck 'em out the way. They also often fire without catching. Not on every job, but often enough to remind me that there is always another tool for the job. I really like the Trapline, and I'm working on refining my setting technique constantly. Just wondered what other mole men's experiences with them were. And to say hello.

      Just out of interest......

Which trap do you reach for first? You can explain why if you choose.

For me, it's the Duffus every time, although I can see the attraction of the Talpex type traps.

come on guys n girls a bit of fun whats your record catch in a season? i know this is gonna show some very big numbers from some of you agricultural mole catchers of present or past, honesty please, its gonna be multiple thousands we know but please say of you best season even if very small.dont be shy,i expect some beginers to be shocked and even disbelieve some figures, my catch is small compared to most agri trappers lets say 1500 modestly for myself to start it off over many jobs,so come on king mole who are you!
