working wheaten lines

Recommended Posts

I'm not condemning the breed for the sins of a few, but some of the older members may remember an incident at a trial many years ago when Flasher Dunphy, R.I.P., walked over to a van beside which a wheaten dog was teathered, and leaning across to slap his hand on the roof of the van, found the dog latched onto his arm pit. Most of these dogs have been kept in pens or on chains and have not been socialised to the extent that they can be trusted among civilised folk. Kept in the home I'm sure would be a different matter however.

Bolio i was at an old mates funeral last week with the guy who actually owned the wheaten that latched onto Flasher (r.i.p )that day ,

infact theres still lines of that breeding in mens back yards here ,now heres the funny side of the story was Flasher opening the door

of the van to take the good Waterford crystal we had just purchased from him :laugh: ,as we all fell about the field laughing and

Flasher (R.I.P )howling like a banshee .

Hi Mudd ,this dog in question was a well known dog ,infact think Fat J ,might have had a pup of him ,but i

can assure any man here kids and grandkids where 100% with him and his off springs ,maybe cos these dogs

where in a working home and also able to mix with kids day and night ,before anybody jumps down my throat we all know

it only takes a phone to ring to spark a dog of this type up the wrong way but on a Personal Note i believe this type

of temparment excells in the enviroment the dog is brought up in .

We used to stay with Flasher the night before the trials and he never let me go away without 'a bit o glass'. One of those yard long twisting chrystal walking sticks hung over my fireplace for years.

Happy memories, r.i.p. Tony

Just been reading the thread, and wondering one how fast across the ground are they? And are most Wheatons not dog friendly? Also crossing them with a greyhound does this make them more user friendily regarding other dogs?

i dont know, but id say the generic kerry blue, glen of imaal, wheaten type was used for dog fighting of a type in their past..My greatgrandmother (-lived with us - like another mother to me)-said that she remembered dogfights in ireland (kerry blues)-she was born in 1897 so that would have been around 1910 ish.She also reckoned that the only people she saw with proper kerry blues in later years were tinkers..A friend has a glen thats probably the most dog aggressive dog ive ever seen.Wheatens are the same breed just a different shape, obviously the kerry blue has declined considerably since that era.

where this dog come from ? is in irland kennel?

If this is the same Rebel I saw he changed my perception of wheatens as he has a great temperament around other dogs and humans.

oyama about 14 yr ago we had a half bred wheaten greyhound she was as good an addition to our team of dogs as any she was worked hard everyweek while terriers where rotated this bitch done her stuff week in week out.She was however never to be trusted around strangers or other dogs as she was a liability as we found out on several occasions. She was 22" and could have lifted rabbits but not big numbers and too slow for long slips at fox out of cover.it could be that certain lines are worse than others as I have seen a few of Rebels relations and although they did nt have as placid a temperament as Rebel they where easy enough to work with and non where even close to the untrustworthy temperment of that half bred.

Im no expert though it's just what I noticed.

some people talk crap on this site the wheaton is like any other dog good and bad in the breed and im talking from experience a friend has a dog there some pups due from him soon ill get a pic of him. and yes they can be dog agressive depends on the dog and how its brought up the one i know is kennelled with an old bitch terrier and isant botherd for fighting unless another dog looks at it the wrong way and they dont back down as an alsation found out near us one day when it tryed having a go at a lurcher pup we was walking with the wheaton loose soon went running with its tail between its legs. tempreament wise he sound you just gotta watch him after a dig when hes still fired up and he is pritty fast for his size over open ground and iv seen him jump 5 or 6 foot through a shed window from standing.

when its comes to working talk about game he will go till he drops if you let him he sits there wining on the chain till he ready to pull at the end of a dig and will work all day this dog also works cover and they have a good nose hes been mated to a greyhound and out of 6 or 7 pups 3 are still alive and doing the job and doing it well taking and pulling everything there put to long as they can get up on it there not the fastest dogs but there game and intelligent the other 3 died doing the job one of them owned buy my mate who bred them and it something ellse to watch a pure one work iv seen bullxs struggle sometimes pulling game that the wheaton gets out in seconds but maybe the bull xs dint know there job as much as the owners thought.

ive a wheaten haf cross. looks like a straight wheaten he is dog agressive :icon_eek: but has been reared in a family atmosphere. and he has never put a foot wrong with any one  not the type of dog for most folk to much of a handfull :o

edited to add he was out of a dog called rebel also. one of an unrelated pair imported as pups. will not own any other type of lurcher now. and if i had the work for one i would have a full wheaten in a minute

As I said earlier, I wouldn't condemn the whole breed for the sins of a few but when you've been going to trials every month of the season over a period of years and viewed up to thirty wheatens tethered up and waiting their turn at each trial, not to mention visiting the yards of doyens of the breed on a regular basis like Peter Gorman who may have had half a dozen adults and more youngsters on the way up you will have heard the warning, "don't go near that fella" more than once.

marky r I was simply answering a question in my experience that no one else has touched on.with regards to you " having experience" Bolio and Jimmysshop have real experience of the breed while you,and I,really only have an observation of a few particular dogs.
