  1. Treehands latest member of the pack, ready for her first "real" season, have no doubt she will fulfil her vocation in life! We are out regular together, I am amazed with this dogs style, Only hoping my new pup can make a similar grade ? Enjoyed the posts and old pics
  2. There are a few lads active In the area not sure if any on this forum, think most people keep themselves quiet, not the best area about, good roads to get to decent spots though within half an hour at least, plenty of scrubland around for a mooch about - what dogs do you run ?
  3. The only benefit is the noise, as they are silent and after a while listening to a petrol engine revving away you will appreciate the difference. Unfortunately from my experience of using the smoker is that they just don't bolt rats, they look very impressive and seem to fill banks etc with their smoke but it just isn't pungent enough to bolt rats like the fumes from a petrol engine. I bought one, tried it on several locations that I knew to be holding rats and was very disappointed with the results, rang company who manufactured smoker and complained, they weren't aware of others having simi
  4. Can you send me your number on a pm please as I have a chap who I have given ferrets to before who is looking for another for his son, I'm not breeding any this year, been looking out for someone with them locally, cheers phil.
  5. 12th April was the first day I spotted my first one, been looking out for them, bit earlier than last year although the year before they were hear at the end of March beating my record of first sighting of the 7th April which had stood for several years, I'm obsessed with spotting my first one as I'm all over the North west working and actively seek them out. Numbers picking up now spotting them all over locally when out on the shoot, this recent warm spell must of helped, got blue tits nesting in my bird box, back and forth as I look out of my front window, better than watching TV !
  6. Lovely bit of sport this afternoon, just having a brew after getting home from work, sitting in my armchair, who should walk up the driveway, RSPCA fundraiser with a blue tabard on, game on ! Jumped up met him as he knocked on door, usual intro do you own an pet etc, my answer, "yes" Refused to elaborate any further then informing him about the amount of thefts recently and not wishing to disclose any details, he was taken back with my answers, threw him off his usual doorstep conversation ! Let him carry on asked him a few simple questions, he was very vague, didn't know a great deal other
  7. It's very open there, wind can be biting at times, if you ever visited the Waterloo cup before the ban you would be on the same estate, we drive the withens bank with our cockers in the season, fantastic ground.
  8. Out again on the estate today at the rats, only managed 63 today. Fantastic sport again, dogs knackered, we are feeling the pain more with all the digging !! As you can see most of the rats are of a decent size with all the maize they have consumed, blocks completely stripped bare, decimated. Couple of nests found with young in, really good day had by all, weather was great, wet start but cleared fortunately
  9. Unable to load video, close up of the bag instead !
  10. Short video at start of day in the cover crop
  11. We've been out today with the head keeper on a local shoot who we beat for- only managed to get 79 rats, ran out of time! Back again next week for more sport, brilliant time, dogs worked really hard to get the bag, everyone marked and dug out, plenty of bolts with multiple kills, great fun. We have been looking at the holes/runs coming out of cover crops a all season, rats well fed on corn and maize, good few sessions left before weather picks up, scary at times but real good entertainment ! Took a few vids/ pics to share, hope you enjoy them as much as we did !!!
  12. Back out this afternoon with the rest of the lads on the estate for a spot of pigeon shooting in the coverts now the season is over, not too many birds about, they weren't really coming in but I managed 21 birds with one lost. Spoke to the shoot captain on way down the track on way home, they had accounted for 137, but then they are up a scaffold tower with an added advantage over us beaters !
  13. Now the shooting on the estate has come to an end, and don't we know it, as were all knackered, dogs too after endless days beating, five days I. The last week, admittedly two were beaters days so we had a bit of shooting to cheer us up, we can make an inroad on the rats that have fed well on the maize cover strips, had a few hours out today with a little bit of success in a few different areas, couple of snaps on phone to show you all
  14. Depends on dogs age, and it's intended use when fully trained, you need to expand your question. Personally I get my spaniels hunting first and just use the lead as a means of attaching the dog to myself, it's only later in its training once I'm happy with the hunting and the dog is older and physically stronger that I correct the lead training technique . If you are consistent and use the command at the correct time that you apply pressure when required you will get results, firm but fair, gentle tugs don't work but equally you don't want to hurt or instill fear! I use squares, either imag
  15. There has never been a Chocolate lab made up to FTCh, that says it all really, some are used in competition but only rarely as the chocolate gene is more prolific in the show strains of the breed, the two types of dog are completely different, often crossed, this is where the colour may come from in some working pedigrees. Coat colour is personal preference but buyer beware with the chocolate gene as they don't show the same natural ability as blacks and yellows, but then there are always exceptions to every rule! All Labradors are greedy and easily put weight on if not exercised properly, m
  16. Same as you would with another style lamp, I just use my thumb to give a gentle bit of pressure on the button at rear of torch, simple really. The handle just makes sweeping the beam easier for me, may not suit everyone but it's better for me. My bitch, although kept on a slip is biddable when the beam is on, and generally there are two of us out with only one lamp so I'm not always using the light anyway, I just find it better as I say but each to their own ?
  17. Iv aquired a new handle for the new torch to make it easier for lamping with, the handle was off a drill to give you extra pressure when drilling something hard/difficult. Simple in itself, a strip of rubber placed under the plastic and tightened up with the handle screwed tighter until firm, positioned in centre of torch to balance out, it feels great, it'll be so much more easier to operate. I have ordered a filter, awaiting delivery, lamp will be complete then, I will post further results when that arrives!
  18. After reading posts in this thread I decided to purchase one myself, it's arrived now, not had the opportunity to get out with it as I've been working nights this week, but just playing about with it over the field at rear of my house it seems truly awesome ! I particular like the strobe effect next to the full beam setting how effective that will be on a rabbit as it makes for a hedge line to confuse it, something we always do by putting your hand over the beam, now it can be done automatically! No leads to tangle, easy to operate, it's a no brainier ?
  19. Couldn't agree more, complete waste of money, even rang up to complain and was told I was the first to inform him they weren't effective, not had any other complaints, bizarre ! Dogs have given positive marks, pumped loads of smoke down holes, seen it escaping from other holes, looks impressive, no bolts time after time, give up trying it after that, load of junk! Nice idea, quiet but not up to the job required?
  20. Iv just ordered one this morning after reading this post to try them out, hope they as good as they sound/look in the footage on utube? On researching the batteries for them u have to be careful as it appears there are a lot of reconditioned laptop batteries on eBay re packaged , iv ordered two sets of Panasonic ones on amazon £34 each, lamp£110, still cheaper than a lithium pack and lamp set up
  21. I run three, an older one in semi retirement , a daughter that I kept back of her when I used a FTCH stud dog over her to improve her line, and also a younger bitch that is in its first real season this year after a taste of work at the very end of last season. As you will see my preference is for the red coloured dogs, not ideal for everyone as they look like a fox about to bolt often when working in cover, but the colour appeals to me, although it's the nature of the breed that I am smitten on. Mine work in a perfect close pattern without ranging too far, never going out of shot rang
  22. Just got in, wind great, moon came up after a while when the clouds cleared, conditions looked ideal, couple of runs only caught a few rabbits before evening was spoilt by another lamper driving around boundary fields lamping from a Land Rover! Always another night ?
  23. Iv also got one of each in.177, both excellent but I always pick up the HW100 first, so much so that I think I'll be swapping the AA for a new laminate version of the HW100, not seen the synthetic stock version out yet other than on utube but that too looks interesting ? Personal preference only as AA are excellent and faultless, I just think the HW100 comes up to my shoulder and feels better for me
  24. Spent this afternoon with a friend who has the pest control on a local estate, ended up with 23 rats, no big numbers but fast action for the dogs, a Russell and a Cock/Russell, great sport, had a fab time ! That cock/Russell was so fast, awesome to watch, most of the rats were under plastic bags in a building, had a few more after outside near a grain drying building, not all in picture.
  25. Are there any lads on the site from the Isle of Man ? The reason I ask is a friend of mine who doesn't use the site is aware that an old aquaintance is trying to contact him but until now they keep missing each other each time his old friend comes across to the mainland. Not wanting to put any personal information up on a open public forum, if anyone can help please pm me and I will explain more, Have a great christmas everyone, plenty of time off for a bit of sport hopefully, Regards Phil.
