  1. How do, I asked a question about fitting looped tubes, some good advise came from other members on here, loop through the holes and then back to the pouch and bind there. Not sure about single tube but would say through holes in catty bind as per flats and then same with pouch end bind. I am new to catties so someone else on here with more knowledge may be better able to advise you. Atb Chisler
  2. excuse poor sketch, not sure which one to go for, or does it matter Atb chisler Loops.pdf
  3. cheers for that, I will be using my natural which I made for flats, no holes or slots, was thinking of attaching ends of the loop to fork like with flats rap and tuck.
  4. How do, at present I'm using TBG flat band set up on my catty, out of interest I would like to try tubes, my question is regarding connecting looped tubes to pouches do you just loop the tube through the pouch and then bind to the fork or loop through the pouch- bind and then bind onto the fork. cheers in anticipation Chisler
  5. Beautiful piece of craftsmanship their, he is obviously at one with his material.
  6. I'm only on this forum and the MT Riders Club, I own and restore military motorcycles, the lads on the forum are always willing to help and advise and share the knowledge to keep these old bikes running. I've found THL forum to be great so far, loads of advise and friendly banter. Well please I joined up. Atb

  8. Cheers, it's been dead in the hedge for about 3yrs know, would the fungus have grown once it was dead.
  9. Thanks, not come across the term 'spalting' before, is that the blackish lines within the grain? if so what would they be.
  10. Ash the Queens wood, very nice to carve, you'II enjoy it.
  11. Found this fork in a dead Hazel bough on my walk Friday afternoon, so made this for my lad, stop him moaning 'can I have ago can I have ago'. I've put a single band on it, he found double a bit too much, he will have to work up to it. He's out practicing in the rain. cheers Chisler
  12. very nice photography, grand looking hound.
  13. Really looks nice, antique look about it with that natural patina.
  14. A beauty, pure and simple lines, nice one
  15. All the bows I've carved have been from well seasoned wood, the longer the better, truer the final bow curve will be. from what I read yew staves where cut and seasoned for 6 years before shaping,
  16. Sad to hear, my thoughts are with you.
  17. very good idea, you have more chance of success starting off with a laminated bow, I will have a look in my loft I'm sure I still have a little booklet that I used to get started with, if I find it I would be pleased to post it off to you.
  18. 7" dia is a good size, if you quarter it then you will have 4- 72" staves - 4 bows- or 4 attempts to make 1 bow, go for it .
  19. Yep sounds like you have the dream piece of yew, no I wouldn't say it's hard, just time consuming. The section through a bow is D shaped, with Yew the white wood is the face (flat part of the D) the red wood is the belly of the bow (round part of the D), with a yew stave you have to follow the grain, if theirs knots in it then you shape round them, not cut into them, they can look deformed due to following the grain. Have a go but be prepared for failure, single wood bows do tend to fail during the tillering process. atb Chisler
  20. Made and attached the band set, had a shoot, really like it, used a few 12mm steel balls, feels powerful, already blooded it, unfortunately it was mine, I now know where not to place my thumb atb chisler
  21. The longbow in the pic is a laminated Hickory / Hazel, when I first made it 18 yrs ago it had a 65Ib draw weight, over time it has come down to 52Ibs, which is fine for me using it for clout shooting. The other 2 longbows where, 1 Hic & Ash the other a single wood Degame from Cuba, very hard but beautiful to carve. the chap who commissioned it wanted it 75Ibs or above it came in at 82Ibs ok for him he was built like a brick s**t house, to much for me.The hunting bows where both 50" 55Ib single Degame. As mentioned it's the making process I enjoyed the most, I was crap at shooting, put it
  22. Thanks for the kind words, as said inspired by you chaps, going to have a go at another for my lad, he said he wants a 'modern looking one', yoof of today. Cheers Chisler
  23. How do chaps, well inspired by some of the outstanding quality catapults I've seen on here which you chaps have made I've had a go at carving one myself, never made one before, however many years back I got into making bows, 3 Longbows and 2 smaller hunting bows. Clearing out my wood pile last week at the back I found a Hazel bough that I put to one side about 6 years ago, just couldn't bring myself to burn it, I'm sure you know what I mean. so I cut this fork out of it and commenced with carving. Like with the bows I really enjoyed the making process, next will be the band set, using Theraban
