kyboy44 replied to kyboy44's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
I don't know about the fiest because you don't hardly see them anymore but wetterhoun is a bead that I have never heard of but they seem to be a dog that was used for the same family of a lot of the animals I go for if anyone knows anything about them I would love to know like how they hunt I seen they are in the gundog group do they hunt like a pointer or do they flush or do they track and bay or catch do they run quite until they see the game or do they open up soon as they have something do they work in a pack or just one or two together and lastly do they track otter and polecat to their d -
Just wondering what job would you see them doing would they be a tracker or a catch dog would they open on a tack or run quite

Hop this is a ok spot for my question a guy on another forum was telling me about catching beaver in Sweden in the 1800 he told me dogs were used to find the den's then they would put out what he called beaver nets up and down river from the den they were to catch the beaver when the dogs dive the beaver out if anyone knows about these nets I could use any information on how they were made how they work and what they look like thinks

A guy on a another forum was telling me about beaver hunting in Sweden how dogs were used to find the den's then what he called beaver nets would be put up River and down river in case the beaver got away when the beaver was pushed out of the den I hop this would be the right spot for someone to know what they are and how they would have been made and used

Ok I had a guy I was talking to come up with this we know the German bread points were used for birds and fur both and we got to thinking we had heard of dogs being used to track furs to the den's for trapping season this is the idea we had if you got a pointer use to playing hid and seek and fatch with the furs we were going after mostly beaver muskrat mink skunks and welsel could they be dependent on to work a track to the den and go on point to show were the den is like I said this was just a idea we had so feel free to tell us if we are nuts
-
Just wondering are these the dogs that the cops use that look like Germany Shepard dogs
-
Come on a boy that was telling me how dogs were used in Sweden for beaver the dog would find a beaver den then would be tied up and nets call beaver nets would be put out up River and down river afterwards the dog was let loose to dive out the beaver or sometime catch and pull the beaver out were it would be killed with Spears or if it made it to the water would be trapped in the nets and pulled out and Speard was wanting to know if anyone knows of a book or website that would show how the dogs were trained to do this and how the nets were made in English if anyone has any information it would

All I could find was be used for hog but then I met a guy on here that was x with a while that was pretty good on fox but said with the bigger game like coyote I may do better with a different x we hunt a lot of Hill's with a lot of trees and cover most looking for a dog that could go into caver and push the game out to the gun I am looking at them because they don't range OUT like a hound would or take a very cold trail which I like the only bad thing I found about them was they are not that open so they might be hard to keep up with The only thing would be how would they handle the game
-
Cool
-
Was wondering how they might do over here for pushing game out of cover to y gun
-
Cool man just over here the law is that the dog has to be on a leash at all times was just wondering if anyone works them like that
-
Looking for anyone who might have information about a hunting dog called the a.c.d which was used as a tracking and bay dog for hogs was wanting to find out how they might do for pushing rabbit fox and coyote to the gun reason I was asking they seem like they would be pretty good for it the main thing I like is they don't range out as far as a hound would and they don't work as cold track as a hound the only bad thing I read about them is they are not that open so it might be hard to keep up with so any info you all could give great

Was wondering anyone use Airedales for bushing to the gun mostly thinking for fox and coyote know a lot of you hunt fox but proble not to many have hunted coyote best way I could explain them is faster and smarter than fox and just about as strong in a fight as a wild hog
-
I was thinking that otter and mink would den up in the day time and would make it easier for traping the only thing with hounds would be I found out most of the time the hounds would run them until they run them down and kill and we go ofter them for the furs
-
Just found out a another way that might work for us over here is the dog walking beside you on a leash and pointing or setting when they pick up on something has anyone worked one like that we have to keep the dog on a leash at all times
-
I came across a few people that were still using them as around dog but never got to ask them questions so I thought I would ask if anyone on here Used them Do you work them alon or with other dogs I always thought they were only catch dog but some say they can track Mostly looking at them for coyote fox mink and otters as in finding otter and mink dens and finding fox and coyote And last on fox and coyote would you say that they would have the speed to them down or push them to the gun
-
Though I would ask does anyone use Airedales for bushing work I always thought that they were just pets and show dogs and that when they were hunting lines they were just catch dog but the last few days I came across people still using them as vemine dogs on there own just wanted to know if any one here still used most looking for information on how they would do on fox coyote otter and mink

Well never thought about a terrier only thing would be in our state has a law against den digen so maybe a cross that would be to big to do underground most what I was trying to understand was how would you get dogs to work otter and mink all the dogs I grew up with were coon and cottontails and the way we got a pup to hunt was to run them with a older dog but nobody has ever used one for otter over here but some of the old times talked about using mink dogs to find the den which give me the idea then I had a book about otter hunting and the dogs run them into a den before catching it but if a

Plus I was thinking a dog that could run one into it den would make a otter or mink a lot easier to get them looking for spots to set traps on your own
-
Plus one that could bay a otter or mink in a den or hole would be a lot less trouble than trying to find a spot on you Owen to trap
-
Different ways than what I was bring up with ture but just something I thought would be cool
-
Thanks for the info you all I find a hunting book I had been given that had a few pages about otter hunting and it seemed like the dogs bayed the otter in a den before it was driven out by a terrier then the dogs were let loose then running it down to kill I was thinking if you could bay one in a den it could be take care of better than the dogs do it also if I understand the laws in the u.k dogs can't be used to catch and kill game so if mink hunting is still don how are they keep from killing ever time again just trying to find information about a kind of hunting that could be done but just
-
Also if I understand you correctly they would bay up the mink then hold back until it was jumped and then let loose again have you ever heard of them catching one and if so do they mess up the skins
