Thanks man just something I was reading about and thought it would be cool just wanted to know anyone still use the otter hound for mink maybe or are they all just pets now
-
First of all I know otter hunting is outlawd in the u.k but I am from the u.s and it looks like they would be far game for hunting dogs along with mink it just not that common but I have heard some of the old times talk about dogs that were used to track mink to there dens I was hoping maybe there were few of the old times on here that could remember when otter hunting could be done and turn me on to some training books and maybe know a few things I wanted to ask The way I understand it otter and mink come from the same family so could the Same dog be used for both When it could be done for
-
Mostly curs I have seen were tree dogs
-
I know stacking does not work here because to much cover baiting is not allowed and running them with dogs has to much red tape to be done I read some do it and in the fall when they fatt up well come if they think it food
-
I was just wondering I know over here just seeing a dog would make a deer run but I guess if the dog stays still it might not scare the deer
-
Any one use calls bear hunting I know most are going to say only when stacking but I wonder if you can do it like coyote or fox
-
Cool I was thinking a deer would smell the dog before they saw it
-
I was thinking to train one to find a trap drag off would maybe be like training hounds and for finding dens would be like how cops use dog to find drugs just not on a leash
-
Just wanted to ask you guys who use deer dogs under high set have you had your dog pick up on a deer coming in before you seen it also could someone who let they dog stay under the high set tell me why the deer are not scared off soon as they know the dog was there
-
Hey guys how goes it want to jump on here and see if any of you older guys that traped for some time could tell a greenhorn if this was true or if some of the old times were playing me this was the jobs that they told me a good dog would help a trapper with Finding game that pulled a trap off with them Tracking some animals to their dens around here that would be beaver muskrat mink and polecat And last finding the run's of the game I am still kind of new to all this and I could kind of see how the first two could be but the last one. Is the one I can't figure out
-
Hi everyone hope maybe someone could help and tell me if this is even possible I am looking at getting a new dog for hunting and what it well be for is when we are game calling or bait hunting is to set with me and act as a early warning when game is coming mostly fox bobcat and coyote read were a guy had a Airdrie x working like that but the part I could not figure out was how he said the dog would let him know if something was coming it would not bark but would look the way it was coming and make a low wining sound does that sound like something dog could learn to do
-
Thinking maybe what I need is a x like they use for hogs what would you all say the main game we are looking at is fox coon bobcat and coyote we use game callers bait and trapping so need one that could sit with you on a stand and be able to pick up on one coming to the stand with out taking out on it then blood track after the shot or when working the trap line be able to track animals to the dens or track one that pulled off a trap and bay it until I get to it what do you all think would a pure blood have it in them for work like that or maybe a x if so what kind of x would you recommend
-
Mostly any dog I have seen that had hunting blood was like that when they are young the reasons I got interested in them were they are very smart and if they can bay a hog they could probably handle fox coyote and bobcat the only thing is were we hunt fur do you think they can learn not to rip up game when they find it
-
If they have a lot of drive to get ahold of something how well could they work on a calling stand mostly want one to let me know when game is coming and blood tracking like a deer stacking dog would do under a high set would you think they would want to take out after one coming in or rip on up
-
Thanks man I had a cur dog once real good coon dog but for setting on a call stand or tracking trapped game I would be thinking they would want to rip the game apart I was thinking the a.c.d be a bay dog maybe not have the kill dive that a cur would have they ever been used for anything besides hogs
-
I was thinking maybe they could work for what I was thinking about setting with you on a call stand to let you know when game was coming blood tracking and finding dens and finding traps that was drag off what would you all say could they do work like that or maybe a x
-
Was she sight running them or smelling them
-
I am thinking that a greyhound would be the fastest one that I have read about but they look like the bread that gives out the fastest and most likely to get hurt on hard game so maybe I should look at. A greyhound x
-
It was a story I read the guy would call one in with him and the dog in a blind if the coyote stayed to far out he would shot it be if it came in range for the dog he would let the dog loss and the dog would catch it and kill but I am like you I would think that the dog would not have the speed or size to work I that but then again when I was younger I saw what I think was a EBT be used for fox and hog if I am rembering right so I was thinking that if it been done someone might know
-
I came up on a guy who claimed to use APBT as a catch dog for coyote hunting and the way he did it was using a e-callery to bring them in and when it was at a certain range let the dog loss on it bringing back to me a show on TV I saw as a little kid of a Ebt be used like that for fox or hog that were coming to bait just wanted to know if any one seen ones be used like this
-
Well I find a guy on the internet that hunted his ebt like I was thinking about he was using a e caller to bring coyote into rang and the dog would take it down and kill it I just wish he had said what kind of rang it needs to be in if any of you all hunt them like this what would you say
-
He from the Weston put of the u.s were land is more open I am from the south eastern u.s were we have more cover the only thing I am trying to find out is if sight hounds would have the speed to be on one before they lost it in cover
-
Thanks boys maybe I am not as crazy as I thought mostly we hunt coyote fox and bobcat I have looked at bushing dogs and could not find any that I flet like would not have a good chance of getting killed. Mostly by the coyote the only thing I have not been able to figure out if the dogs could have the speed to get one before it makes it back to COVER
-
OK fist let me say be in the u.s we don't have to go by the same laws a lot of you all do but I wanted to see what one's that work with running dogs thought about this idea that keep working on my head I live in a place with a lot of trees. And cover but it has a lot of open space to so I was thinking what if you use a game caller or bait to bring out the game to the dog the only problem I can see is the dog be able to get to the game before it gets to COVER the opening can be anywhere from 10-20 feet to a 100 yard's or so what would you all day sounds like It could work or have I lost it
-
But is it something that you can teach them or just luck
