This is why I tattoo and chip my dogs - no bloody argument then.

letting the dog have there catch or not
Scallywag replied to billy0200's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
The first time a dog catches and brings a rabbit to me I give it the whole thing when we get home in celebration. After that first catch I paunch, skin and freeze them for later, but I always give the dogs a head each and the liver/kidneys when paunching in the field at the end of an outing -
There's 2 lurchers in the pound here http://bramcote-rescue.co.uk/adoptpage.html The tan one in particular looks in good condition - hard to believe no one's looking for them..............

I've had to break two adult dogs to ferrets - both were about two when I got them and started taking them out. They both became totally reliable and the main thing was getting them all out working together. As soon as my dogs understood that the ferrets are part of the team, and more than that, that they produce rabbits for them, I never had any bother at all. I'm not a brilliant trainer or anything so if I can do it, it's def possible!

I'd get her to the vet for a scan - it costs about £30 and in this case will probably be worth the money. They should be able to tell you how far on she is, roughly how many pups there are and how big/well developed the pups are. That might give you an idea of whether or not she'll deliver them easily or if you might have problems. It is possible to have a pregnant bitch spayed - the pups are obviously aborted as part of the procedure, but it can well and truly f**k with the bitch as it sends her hormones into an uproar and personally I'd say it's to be avoided. Assuming she delivers the pup

I used to feel like this but I have to admit I've been getting demoralised lately. Other people going on my land (someone's been shooting and someone else lamping since before the season started, so that what should have been untouched land was low on numbers and the remaining rabbits lamp shy) means it's been thin pickings since the start of the season. Apart from missing the feeling of success which both me and my dogs enjoy, I need food in the freezer - times are hard and the dogs usually make a good contribution to their food bill!

We were wondering where all the rabbits were the other week, then we saw three cats hunting in the fields! Thought they were foxes at first in the lamp...I don't bother going out now if it's dry and warmish - they stay indoors if the weather's bad!

I'm friends with Chook and 6 Pack but agree with Ratreeper on this one. I don't think there's any need for violence and on the odd shameful occasion I've lost my temper with a dog I've achieved very little except loss of trust on their part and dignity on mine. But I agree dogs need good clear leadership and authority and that they're more confident, secure and relaxed as a result. Having said all that, Chook and 6 Pack's dogs are better behaved that my b*****ds!

I had a jrt x whippet once - she was nothing like as good as your lad but then I didn't really have a clue at that point! He's a great little dog - your whole pack looks very handy.

I love outings like that. Bryn sounds like a fantastic dog - does it all! I spent a happy couple of hours out with Chook today - one terrier, five lurchers and a deerhound. We turfed out all the corners for bunnies and the dogs came home very happy.

Actually, having read the feedback, a plan is afoot - watch this space! -

The racing didn't overrun - we filled the cards for the simo quickly and got started nice and early. For some reason it was arranged for the judging of the championship to run simultaneously with the racing - a time issue I guess. yes but very easily corrected with a little communication Yup - your comment has been noted -

I like shin too - in the slow cooker with good stock, red wine, whole cloves of garlic that you fish out and mash up and stir back in at the end (garlic cooked like this is lovely and mild) and puy or blue lentils. Put it in the cooker in the morning and it's ready for the evening - perfect after a day out ferreting. Good with mash and veg or chunks of rustic bread.

The judges are Rod Clarke and Tom Brannon. -
Stick an electric collar on it and zap the living daylights out of it if it looks at you a bit funny - should come right.

My bitch did something similar a few years ago. Saw the vet, bound the foot, rested her for 6 weeks and never looked back - was as good as new and she ran all types of ground with no problem. I wouldn't have the toe off unless it was a last resort, you're changing the structure of the foot.

Good on you. That's one intense, intelligent stare that pup has - going to put you through your paces I reckon! Lovely pups.

Out in the field and face to face I've found hunting men to be among the least sexist I've ever met. The men I've met are interested in if I take my dogs and the hunt seriously and if I do, they take me seriously. I've had great advice and guidance and learned loads. But on a forum, what a lot of knobs appear!

I'm after a rod and reel for fishing off rocks - something good for a total beginner so nothing fancy. Was given a rod by a friend but it's too flimsy so need something a bit bigger/stronger. I'm near Halifax (yes, about as far from the sea as you can get!). Many thanks.

Weren't the parson's russells 14", 14lb dogs? A lot seem bigger than that nowadays though...
