  1. my advice(for what its worth lol) is to read about gwps.books such as the versatile gundog by guy wallace helped me to understand what i had and gave me some hope.
  2. mine is cn bred. dont give up,i thought my bitch, the one that can be seen taking rabbits on the video section, would never leave sheep and cows alone.i honestly thought id have to put her to sleep. she caused me alot of stress and sleepless nights.BUT then she grew up,started hunting................broke her neck ..............but we got there in the end
  3. ive had gwp crosses for nearly five years..............its been an emotional journey
  4. lamping is productive and good sport but on the right land i wouldnt call daytime hunting boring.also if your having to walk too far to get a run it just means your on the wrong land regardless of what your after.for example where i get to run my dogs on rabbits would be useless if fox or hare (pre ban)was your intended quarry. i think doxhope is bang on,it dosent matter which you prefer you go out as often as you can.i dont have much permission and rely on invites to get good hunting so i take what i can get whatever the land, weather etc.....day or night.
  5. id agree with that aswell, theres no dought id enjoy lamping more if i had a good lamping dog. i wouldnt go out lamping more as i lamp as much as possible with what i have but id catch more and it would be less sressfull
  6. dont start about fishing ..................fishermen who like one form over an other can really argue.a couple of years ago i joined the local fishing club who have a couple of stocked ponds.i hadnt done much course fishing but as always i got stuck with the know-it-all who informed me i didnt need a rod as you can catch fish with a pole and a bit of elastic.he caught lots of little things a few inches long whilst i caught little. i kept getting snagged by casting to far, infact its not casting, more like lobbing a hook and a float.at the end of the session i was totally sick and whilst pac
  7. i prefer daytime hunting on rats, rabbits or pre ban foxes but when you work full time you only get a weekend to go out, sometimes only one day if you have other commitments...............but you can lamp frequently. i like lamping but it dosent equal daytime hunting for me,though if i had better lamping dogs perhaps my view would change slightly.dont get me wrong,im out tonight and should get in plenty of lamping this season and id never refuse a look out. for me,hunting is about watching a dog use its nose...............terrier or lurcher.when im out in the daytime thats the reason im
  8. the coney catcher dvds are as good as they get.i learnt more from watching them than all the books id read previously. a few minutes of video, such as how to set a purse net,can save having to read whole chapters of books when you dont know anything about hunting and dont have anybody to show you as i did. watching speckle on the rats and then that squirrel is as good a hunting scene as ive ever seen.ive filmed hundreds of rabbits and rats being caught but that piece of footage is hard to beat.
  9. when i only had terriers, everyday i would watch rabbits run across open ground and many times saw foxes do the same. i cursed not being able to keep lurchers at that time,i thought all those creatures would provide good sport and fill the freezer i now know different, try getting a rabbit to break cover when lurchers are about.to do so a rabbit has to be seriously under pressure from the terrier/s. i spent yesterday afternoon on the fells taking forty one rabbits with dog and gun so i know they can be hunted up and taken but go to a place where they are scarce and harrased by ever
  10. most of my hunting time is spent mooching around bushes, hedges, quarries, and general rough ground with very few rabbits on it.still i expect to catch a rabbit or two most days whilst out at exercise.personally i find the big dogs make it easier for the terriers to catch the rabbit as the bunnies often know the lurchers are around and hesitate for the second or two in cover.this can be quite deadly if your terriers are any good. the lurchers do off-course get the odd one pushed out into the open but catch most of theres by being right in among the cover and waiting for the rabbits that hop b
  11. i do abit from 4x4s and have two l200s.a 2002 animal and a 2005 warrior.they are shit compared to discoverys and landys but you can get alot of stuff in the back.i know my motors wont do what the disco did no matter what tyres are on it.still i knew that when i bought it and its for the best,i used to smash the landrover about................
  12. on the fells and moors where rabbits are now reaching ridiculous numbers any dog could catch a respectfull amount just by taking bunnies straight from where they are laid up in the reeds and nettles etc ,thinking about it my lurchers catch most of their rabbits by hunting up and catching the bunnies before they get up. and most of their ferreted rabbits are caught just outside the hole. they are seriously slow,i mean really slow but im sure will take a good number of rabbits this season.im starting to wonder if i could have just got pure pointers in.
  13. it depends on what land and how many rabbits are on it. my lurchers take a few rabbits every week whilst out for a walk, usually by bushing rather than a nice course mind.if they didnt face cover like terriers they wouldnt catch anything.they know to stand in the small clearings as the terriers hunt up.nettle patches are always good aswell. i was out last sunday for a couple of hours on the fell and the dog caught seven,if she was fitter and the weather not so hot id expect her to catch more. on good ground any dog would catch a respectable tally i would think,it helps if they can hunt
  14. a few years back my lurcher bitch took off after a roe, they went over the hill and a minute later she came back coursing a fox which escaped into the block of trees. a few months ago i was lamping rats and chucked a terrier up onto a calf pen roof where they store all sorts of shit.three small rats jumped off the structure and died as they hit the concrete floor.kamikaze rodents
  15. yeah a gwp cross.she was only taken ferreting for the first time last october, before that she was used for bushing, ratting, bits of foxing(not much) and picking up the odd shot bird.a bit of everything. i only got them to run alongside the terriers for a bit of fun.i now wish id spent more time training her as she can be a bit headstrong and her retrieving isnt too good.still, this season might iron out those things, time will tell. i consider myself extremelly lucky to now get invites ferreting on prime rabbit country every weekend throughout the season. tess lacks the extra gears to
  16. some will have seen these pics before,i dont take many photos.to be honest if im going to be hassled by carrying something id rather it was a camcorder.
  17. mainly north york moors but just about all types of terrain. im not saying its always easy,im saying my lurcher has found it far easier to catch bolting rabbits than she has catching the very lamp shy and daytime rabbits near where i live. sorry if my post sounds like im making out ferreting skills are easily mastered.i know they arent and my lurchers have a long way to go but at the same time i know that i can go out ferreting and keep the freezer full using a dog which will work its heart out in woods, quarries, wasteland etc and catch very little.so for me bolting rabbits to the dog w
  18. ive seen most crosses out ferreting and most catch their fair share of rabbits. i use mine for ferreting but they arent top class by any standards and dont get to work with nets. having said that getting my lurcher to stand over a set picking up rabbits as they bolt was the easiest thing ive ever done with working dogs. mind if they clear the hole id have more chance of catching them.
  19. it is very easy to make two piece shovels that are strong.use round fittings and you cant go wrong.takes under five minutes to cut and weld one.
  20. ive seen it happen a few times in water and many times in fairly deep slurry.
  21. i havent seen the dvds mentioned but if theres lots of action on it then it sounds ok.
  22. we were out ferreting yesterday above what just looked like a giant cloud.
