I PICKED UP MY NEW LURCHER PUP THIS MORNING. WISH US BOTH LUCK

good sensible post duckwing. i once had a very strange conversation over the phone with brian...........i wont give details as he isnt here to have his say..........but i was gutted after it.it didnt change how i felt about the terriers just the man himself. anyway this has gone on for three pages which is too much ive just come back from a quick rat lamping trip.the lurcher got one,the terrier got one and i shot two.i do like variety im picking a lurcher pup up tomorrow,i cant wait.its about time i had something to occupy myself with rather than being on here

i found out which of my terriers had good noses by hunting fox above ground.(pre ban off course) rats and rabbits dont tend to run very far, foxes do and some terriers can hunt a line for quite a distance, sometimes to ground.the best sport ive ever had was hunting fox with terriers out bushing.it eventually caused the death of my best "nosed" terrier and i wouldnt dream of hunting those places in that way now. thats how i found what could hunt well,NOT by hunting rats and rabbits.if i never own another plummer sort ill have the memories .........even if ill never hunt that way again

good posts millet and foxdropper. we all have different ideas,it would be silly of me to think mine is right when others who do the same thing think otherwise. anyway i wish everyone a good season..............i just wish i had a bloody dog to use

not at all pink panther,no fisticuffs. a different opinion thats all based upon our own experiences.we keep ratting/bushing terriers, not working terriers. the only thing we do regularly is work lurchers.i dought we would disagree on much regarding lurchers.stick a ferret in,no nets........lovely jubbly.

keeps i want to leave this as its a pointless exercise. you dont have to justify breeding from an untried bitch to me regardless of its breeding.i might have to do the same or buy in a pup whos grandparents worked but not the parents. we finally agree, the working plummer is in trouble if we ratters are thinking of breeding from yet another untried bitch. is it sensible?.........probably not. to be honest keeps you and i dont work our terriers do we? we play on these forums when we should keep quiet because we know feck all. we do take our lurchers out though, maybe we should stick

to be fair to keeps she does have a point. i have no affection for the plummer terrier as such.they generally were found lacking in important areas.i do like the plummers nose and whilst i dont think it is as good as some make out(they are not fecking beagles) i do rate them for hunting. however,as the half crosses and especially the 3/4 are as good at hunting and often fairly usefull earthdogs thats what id rather have. id be reluctant to go back after owning the crosses. so if you like the plummer you have to keep what keeps and co breed.forget about working terriers your owning a bre

keeps the position the plummer finds itself in today is due to people who kill a few rats and chase a few bunnies and think they have good honest working terriers.they then breed from these untried young bitches at a time when they should be worked not producing more puppies. i know you dont need millets dog as youve just lined another of your bitches. i must stress that ive never owned a pure plummer as they are known today so have no experience of what keeps and others breed. maybe im missing out!!!!!!!!!!!!

good post bbb. i know im biased towards the crosses but if you have a good bitch i would outcross.its no good leaving it untill nothing is left, you outcross before that. use a good half cross and the resulting 3/4 breds will be nigh on plummers anyway.

kaney, yes i believe the pup is out of rb half cross.no i dont own the sire mate. digzy she ran into a few things pre ban but nothing to say if she would have made the grade.these days im only interested in rats and rabbits to be honest. -
for some reason the plummer/nuttall cross often makes for very good all round terriers. whilst i kept plummer types for several years i will not put my personal views about todays plummers on here as there is no point. whilst ive bred and worked 1st crosses ive found the 3/4 to take some beating at the rat/rabbit job and they can certainly hunt.i think such a cross is a plummer type, the plummer fans think its a mongrel.i dont care either way,i know what i want.

a mate invited me out onto his permission this afternoon for a couple of hours ratting. my gwp cross has taken rats before but this was her first proper daytime ratting session. ive had a good weekend,i went rabbiting yesterday with my lurcher and a mates 5/8 gwp cross.the conditions were bad in places but we caught a few and this morning i went to see a few other gwp crosses and picked a dog pup out of a litter of half crosses. sorry about the dull picture. many thanks for the invite mate.

ok i got confused i agree that a couple of rats isnt worth mentioning on forums but i think its still worth going out as much as possible.to be honest if i could afford the diesel id go ratting everynight and just before work everyday to just catch one or two rats at a time. half and half is lucky as his permission is nearer, hopefully i can tag along a few times now he has seen sense and got himself a dog. mind even if i was taking good numbers on a weekend i hope i would still be keen enough to go lamping a few rats on a night.anything is better than watching coronation street w -

im sure that half and half will be doing as much as he can now. a few years back we used to do fairly well with my mongrel dee and his fell terrier. i dont think catching one or two rats is not worth bothering with.what else would i do with a kennel of dogs?id love to be out taking large numbers of rats but im not so i go out and get what i can every other day or so. one rat might not seem worth the effort to us but i bet the dog that caught it enjoyed itself -
i admit id like to one-day go out and take rabbits in quantity. unfortunately even if i got the chance im a lazy bugger and twenty rabbits is enough for me to take home,i suppose if i used nets i could maybe put a few more in the bag. oh and a faster hound might come in usefull. keep the pics coming

GOOD POST GIRO. IM GLAD YOU ENJOYED YOUR DAY OUT IN DURHAM.I KNOW IM BIASED BUT WE HAVE SOME FANTASTIC COUNTRYSIDE ON OUR DOORSTEP HERE.

im not sure, mine took the odd pre ban fox but nothing to show me they could do it regularly. she loves the ratting but thats not the same. id like to try a faster gwp cross.my bitch isnt really a running dog.at daytime bunny catching on the steep fells she does great but is so limited at any other lurcherwork.

a brilliant book,i couldnt put it down once id started. phil should have done it years ago.

i can understand that reload,i think for a large part of the hunting i do a pure gwp would do fine. for any young un or newcomer who looks at the footage on here or the ferreting dvd i made at the end of last season and thinks they want one.THINK AGAIN..............they are not beginners dogs so my advice would be to get in some experience with another type first. they need alot of excercise to keep them sane,i cant see me ever wanting anything else but that dosent mean id recommend one.
