Fox Control With A .22
Matthew Phillips replied to Daz Harrison's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Thanks for the explanation Alsone... however one answer always leads to a further question. Who or what defines 'experienced'? Using my 22wmr I can hit a tennis ball at 100 yards in no wind. At other ranges i dial in using range finder. At 200 yards which is the absolute limit of this caliber i can hit a CD (and the ones i miss i tell my mates go through the middle hole ) When the wind is blowing it's another story. Even with a wind meter and calculating drift I find my horizontal accuracy is a struggle but more reliable. The land i shoot on would be safer to hit a fox with a 22 rimf -
Fox Control With A .22

And page 106 now explicitly states fox as vermin: The term “vermin” is not defined in law, but it may include species that cause damage to crops, game, livestock or property such as fox, rabbit, mink, stoat, weasel, brown rat, and grey squirrel So do we now no longer need to have fox against the caliber??? -
Fox Control With A .22

Deker, do you have a link to the latest one? Would be good to quote perfectly and send to my FEO. I was always under the impression it stated something along the lines of "less than 50yards for an experienced shot" Basically it'll save me having to apply for a 223 and then having to fork out for another rifle, mounts, glass, bipod and pricey ammo... Edit: google was my friend and found it immediately - https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/363016/Guidance_on_Firearms_Licensing_Law_v10_-_Oct_2014.pdf -
Or do it redneck style and 'pop the guts' (does anyone actually do that?) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glIst3sbbKs

Fox Control With A .22

So this is what annoys me. I can shoot a fox with pigeon shot at 30 yards but can't shoot a fox at 100 yards with my 22wmr? I know they have to draw the line somewhere but 17hmr and 22wmr are surely powerful enough to kill a fox at 100 yards. At 150 yards my 22wmr retains more energy than my 22r subsonic at the muzzle. -

Variable Or Fixed Magnification???
Matthew Phillips replied to Andrew Russ's topic in Shooting Equipment & Accessories
On my 22lr i have a leupold 6x42 and it's great. On my 22wmr i have a fixed 16x and it's also great in daylight but a waste of time at night. I'm looking for a fixed 10x for my 22wmr. Things like zoom just add more possible problems to cheap scopes. I'd much rather a 2nd hand fixed zoom leupold off ebay then a brand new zoom scope for the same money. There's plenty of leupold 6x42 on ebay but not sure 6x is enough for bunny bashing at 100-150yards -
Calibre Choice - Fac Application
Matthew Phillips replied to Dyl003's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
And he could await the arrival of the armed response team, whilst looking a proper bellend Agreed. In the world of hunting walking around a farm hunting with an AR looking rifle would just cause too many problems. There is no need for these types of rifles unless you're into simulated action man shooting or what ever it's called. -
Most cheap scopes do change POI when adjusting zoom. Best thing to do before spending any money is try another scope off a mates rifle that is known good. Could be something simple like a loose barrel, not free floating the barrel, different shooting position causing force on barrel?

Hi guys, Recently acquired my FAC and what wasn't made clear was how to handle the magazines of the rifles. Should they be locked in the ammo safe? Can they be loaded when locked in the safe? Can they be loaded when travelling but not in the rifle? Can an empty magazine be in the rifle when travelling or in a cabinet? Thanks guys Rather be safe than sorry!

So i've got the option to swap my car out (Skoda Octavia) which currently gets about 50mpg on the motorway. I travel a lot for work so need a vehicle that is good on fuel, however, i also want a 4x4 capable vehicle. I would love a disco or defender but i also want something that is ok at 70mph. What are my options for max £10,000? (obviously second hand) Thanks guys

What Dogs Are You Using?
Matthew Phillips replied to Tozer's topic in Driven, Walked Up, Rough Shooting
Ditto, black mongrel terrier. Very steady now. He won't retrieve but he'll hold steady wounded game for me to get there. Also great at marking live warrens. -
I had a nissan terano xtream swb. Was a 2.7 petrol engine and drank to fuel but was a bloody awesome 4x4! Went absolutely everywhere! Sadly the rockers went on it and were noisy as hell!

Just picked up a second hand rifle today. A remington 597 22 wmr. It said it came with moderator and upon looking when i got it home it's stamped 22LR. Now i know the bullet is the same but the energy is different between 22wmr and 22lr. Is this going to be a problem? I have't fired it yet. Many thanks

One little bit of advice, as soon as you've dispatched the rabbit quickly paunch it and give her the heart, kidneys and liver (if healthy) as it will be a reward for her.

Swap Air Arms S200 .22. Mk For Multi Shot Pcp
Matthew Phillips replied to shadow_sniper's topic in Gun's and Rifle's
Why would you want to swap it and not just upgrade it with the multishot conversion? What's wrong with it?? -
Hi guys, As per the topic I applied for my FAC over three months ago. Am a shotgun cert holder so I half expected things to go quicker. The land was already approved for .270 and all I'm applying for is 22lr and 22wmr. They've had my shotgun certificate for over a month as well now which means I can't buy any cartridges. I called up a few weeks ago and was told "it's with the licensing manager"... and still nothing. If anyone knows where in the long process the licensing managers sits i'd be grateful to here. I'm based in gloucestershire and am well aware that the badger cu

Fac Application - What Is Considered Family?
Matthew Phillips replied to philip140's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I think the best option is to not pull the will over their eyes... just be honest and explain the situation to them? -
This is the best i have found... although it only shows centrefire http://www.riflesintheuk.com/cartridges.htm

Hi guys, Just a quick one. On a moderated 22wmr how far would sound from the crack of the bullet travel? Will someone be able to hear the crack from 300yards away? 500 yards? ect? Just trying to decide if 22lr sub or 22wmr would be more suitable for some rabbits in a field about 1000 yards from residential. Thanks

England Frampton On Severn Country Show
Matthew Phillips replied to poacherkev's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
Its a wicked show. Been a fair few years on the trot. Lots for the dogs to do as well. Not much shooting stalls other than clothing., certainly not the place you'll find a second hand scope. 9:35 the simulated coursing starts in main ring so if you wanted to let your dog have a blast get there by 9:30. :-) -
The Hawke rimfire reticle doesn't state what ammo its for? Subs? HV? 22WMR? Seems like you'll need to figure out what zoom the reticle works at as well as it looks 2nd focal plane?

Hi guys, Went up a new shoot to have a wander around tonight to learn the lay of the land from another established shooter up there. Unfortunately when we turned up there were two vehicles; a Red Ford KA and a dark Blue/Black Fiat hatchback (I have recorded registration plates). As we got out our 4x4 they got their cameras out and started filming. One had a tshirt on with badgers on so i presume they're antis of the soon coming badger cull. I explained to them that it's obnoxious to film people in the way that they are doing so as it is a form of harassment. We were only up there m
