Someone went to the candy shop.

I'm happy to put it to bed and shake on it.

I've had plenty of time out in the real world Si and as someone who nearly got shot with a .22 by a stray bullet from a friend taking a shot he shouldn't have taken, I'm more aware of safety than most. It's not a good idea to be unannounced in the dark next to someone very close in the next field who's spraying bullets about without much of a clue. Hardly seems controversial to me, but just my opinion. I wasn't there, maybe the situation was safer than it sounded. We'll leave it there.

Neither do I but that's twice in a week you decide to make personal attacks, in fact your very post above that I quote says you don't come here to get personal and then say "I also look forward to more of your insightful and entertaining posts because I know that your tongue is wedged firmly in your cheek, because nobody could be that much of a cock ." I'd call that pretty personal. As for my "insightful comments", sometimes people on here forget that this board is read by others who are not members. It doesn't take me to tell you how to suck eggs. However, it may be read by some who've a

You seem to be lacking that common sense that is available because you're the idiot who crouched there in the dark when some unknown without a clue about shooting from your own assessment, was blasting off rounds in the next field close to you and oblivious to your presence and you're the one who thinks it's fine to shoot foxes behind the farmers back on your permission even though you believe he doesn't want you killing them. Well from the above, obviously not you. Risks life stumbling around in the dark undisclosed with some guy with a gun who can't hit a barn door and think

With all that string, a £12 bucket of barbed wire would have been cheaper. Bet the missus wouldn't like that in your jean pockets.
-
3 things to do: 1. Clear up with the farmer who it is and if they have permission to be there 2. If shooting the same land, make yourself known. You don't want the other shooter seeing you as a shadow in the next field, thinking you're a fox and taking a shot or seeing a rabbit between you and him and taking the shot with you as the background! A flashlight should clear up your presence. 3. Get a clear understanding from the farmer of what he wants shot. A permission is not a licence to shoot anything on the land but what the farmer wants shot and if you shoot species he doesn't

By issue I mean explanation. The only answer is going to be a softer or less resistive bullet head if you're seeking greater expansion with .22rf. That said, it did the job.
-
Always great to see these recovery shots. Issue is insufficient velocity. The only practical way to maximise expansion is to experiment with different bullets. However, don't expect hydrostatic shock from .22. rimfire. Maybe time to test a range of ammo and a flesh target (or some dead rabbits) set against some water jugs (you want the same background to ensure anything passing through suffers the same expansion forces on the other side and water is probably the least likey medium to apply severe deformation forces (well this side of expensive ballistic gel), if you want to find the

I used to use 42gr No: 3 or 1's (can't seem to see 1's in heavy non magnum anymore) eg Gamebore Mammoth. Avoid the trap of going for too large a shot over numbers of shot. At range the large singles carry more energy but the overall shocking effect can be insufficient to kill. Better to carry slightly less energy per shot and have a lot more hits and thus overall shock.1's or 3' tend to be the sweet spot with BB's the largest I'd ever personally go. Also if you're going out after fox, I'd choke the gun up 3/4 or full. That way you have maximum range. Obviously, if you're shooting other g

So is VD but it doesn't mean you should go and catch it because you need something to scratch. ? TBH at the longer ranges the noise is is going to diminish anyway. Must admit, never saw the day when SD would buy a .17. Welcome to the mousetrap you big cheese..... and look on the bright side, it's cheaper than running a Cat, it doesn't sh*t on the carpet and saves on the vet bills.

Not really and it wasn't my intention to patronise. By implication if you ask as you're unsure, you want advice / opinions. Just becasue you've narrowed something down to 2 chocies doesn't mean necessarily that you've made the right choice when narrowing. By getting a range of views, you can either confirm your original choice or realise that maybe there's something better suited. It never hurts to shop around for opinion. Either way I hope Phil finds what he's looking for.

If there are better options he should at least know about them. Just because he thinks he wants a .222 / .223 doesn't mean he's made the best decision. People can give opinions on the calibres he requested info about but also consider if maybe others fit better. Someone could suggest they want .243 or .30.06 with their main quarry Red Deer. Are we not going to suggest that maybe .308 or 6.5mm are a better fit? It's a discussion forum. If people wish to give other suggestions they should be free to do so, and rightly so.
-
Maybe they're a bit like those 3 eyed fish on the Simpsons. Nuclear establishment nearby? Does your grass grow glow after dark?
-
Unless he goes the 2 calibre route which was the alternative suggestion. If you want a single "SUV rifle", then .243 is the obvious choice because as Deker mentioned it doesn't limit you to any particular species so is the best all rounder for a do everything deer / fox calibre. That said, an allrounder doesn't excel as well as a specialist choice for each application.
-
technicality on the calibre front. Your are correct but most people treat .204 as they do .22 cf as it capabilities match or exceed most .22 cf's. In fact I'd have thought you'd have been a fan Walshie as the parent case is your loved .222 (Magnum). On the .17 front, yep the Hornet is the best of the .17 mainstream calibres in my opinion. Delswal, as to asking about .223 / .222 / .243 I don't think you can ask about these in isolation as there are many other alternatives to .223 such as .204 that are arguably better in some respects. .243 also isn't a 22CF but definately deserves to

I personally don't agree. The reason why for me the emphasis is on terminal effect and flat shooting is flat shooting is easier to accurately place without detailed scope adjustments and terminal effect buys you a margin for poorly placed shots / wind affected shots. If everything was perfect in life, we'd be shooting foxes at 400 yds with .22 LR HV's because technically at 400yds 42ft lbs is still lethal to fox. The reality is energy requirements are guesstimates and shots rarely occur with range marksman like accuracy in the field. What extra terminal effect buys you therefore is a marg

There are 2 schools of thought - .243 lets you do everything but if you want a bigger calibre for deer leaves you justifying your need for a bigger calibre over .243. Alternative is get a fox calibre and if you then have a need to shoot deer, buy a deer rifle, leaving yourself free to put in for whatever calibre you fancy for deer without the need to justify why you other rifle isn't sufficient. That's what my friend did. He decided on a .223 and then later put in for a .30-06 for deer. Neither would be my choice. Shovel leaner's post pretty much sums up the mainstream fox calibres to con

If I become re-incarnated as a fox, it's your back yard as home for safety! Good luck with the shooting, but just realise the problem with reading vision will only get worse. I'm younger than you and have to resort to 1.5 dioptre readers, - when I go fishing I can't see to thread the line through the rod rings or to tie the hook on without! The only non carry option is going to be a scope with optical correction built in. Haven't seen one though. If not, could I recommend a blunderbus and that you don't have friends around?
-
Yes you are reading! The picture in the scope beit video or optical is inches away from your eyes. It sound as if you need to spot without glasses then put on readers to take the actual shot. Alternatively if you don't want to be taking them off, varifocals, albeit they take some getting used to apparently (haven't tried them). Another possibility might be if you can find a scope with a diopter correction ring built in. Never seen one, but I know they do them for binoculars - I have a pair! You can buy cheap readers for around £2. The ones in Aldi aren't bad. Alternatively many stores sel

That's the side the anti's don't see. Doesn't help when the RSPB website describes them like this: "The canada goose is a large goose, with a distinctive black head and neck and large white throat patch. An introduced species from North America, it has successfully spread to cover most of the UK. It forms noisy flocks and is often regarded as a nuisance in areas where large numbers occur on amenity grassland and parks." https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/wildlife-guides/bird-a-z/canada-goose/ As I read that, apparently they're regarded as pests because they form flocks t

Reading glasses?

Maybe a digital scope or digital scope attachment would help. At least that way you're looking at a screen rather than relying on the brightness of the scope itself.

Two days in and I’m going mental ( new book time )

If you want to let them know you're there, get a 2 bore. Saves you picking up after as well. Joking aside, there's a vidoe here of one being fired. Proper mans gun! ..and here's one for the mouse gunners:
