  1. I have loads of pipes in their court so they get used to being in dark spaces and at different angles. When it come to working them I start them at 6 months and put them in a smallish warren with an older experienced ferret with no purse nets just a long net around it.
  2. Bridport nets are good, look on their website so to is JB's nets. Or get materials and make your own nets, much more rewarding! You can get hutches and runs off eBay cheap.
  3. I have a bedllington x whippet, great ferreting dog and lamps.
  4. Bloody hell don't you guys have enough kit to carry around with you without having a selection of shovels and an iron bar...
  5. No worries bud. Hopefully you won't have to use it too often
  6. There not too heavy at all. I just strap mine onto my back pack. They are pointed tipped and that's what I prefer to use, especially in a hard frost.
  7. Bulldog rabbiting spade, there about £35 but bloody good and will last years and years!
  8. Yes it works no problem, I have 6 collars and 1 receiver.
  9. They will put on weight over the winter, I wouldn't worry about it, it has never bothered me. Get them out regularly to keep them fit but also have pipes and tunnels in the hutch/ court for exercise and to entertain them.

    Spade

I also use a bulldog rabbit spade, but I do also have a small army one as well. It's good if you are under a hedge rather than having a long handle getting caught up in the hedge.

    Dogs

I have a Wippet x bedllington. She is now 3 and this will be her second full season, I would hate to go back to ferreting without a dog. She is a good little marker and great for holding the rabbits in the purse nets and long nets till I get to them and if one does slip the net she's onto it. It is extra work and time having and working a dog but the rewards are great!
  12. Haha, that's okay then, nice to know your not getting it too easy do you find that the warrens in the open are generally larger?
  13. Wish some of the land I ferreted was on open ground like that! Spend my time scrambling through hedges, still same end result though... Great sport!
  14. 10. 5 Jill's and 5 Hob's. 2 of the Jill's and Hob's are from one of this years litters I had.
  15. Aye. I've only ever heard a ferret make 3 noises. Hissing, squeaking (not like a mouse, but I'm not sure how to describe it), and what I would call "chuntering". Some more experienced guys and those who have kept far more generations of ferrets may offer more. I've heard mine hiss when they found a rat, and they chunter when they are excited or know they're getting fed occasionally. Guess different ferrets make different noises? Some of mine hiss when they are eating, carrying the food or squabbling over meat. Mine chunter as well when they get excited and are playing together.Lol what's chun

  17. Cheers norseman and mhopton I currently have 10 ferrets so they do need a fair bit of room. I enjoy mucking about up the garden in the court changing the pipes about and making bits for the ferrets. They have a 6*4 shed with shavings on the floor where they sleep in and then an outdoor court which is about 15*15, they have plenty of room in the months to exercise when they are not being worked. If you have the space why not. Cost me next to nothing to construct it all, basically just the price of the wire. Found the pipe, actually charged a job to take the shed down then set it back up aga
  18. Yer it's great for them, they love it. Good exercise for them during the summer and for the young kits to get used to going through pipes at all angles.

  22. here's some of my pipes I have in my court... I have attached a plastic drain on the roof and its like a round-a-bout for them, they love it. I will put some other pic's up on a different post....
  23. same here, I was in a car with an old mate once and a stoat ran across the road, he swerved to towards it and went straight over it with the wheel....can't get my head around what anyone would get out of doing that! I couldn't agree more, I really don't understand the mentality of some people. If I find fresh road kill I will put it in the truck for the ferrets but I always avoid hitting anything myself. I have friends who aren't into country pursuits, as I like to call them "townies" and they just don't get it and laugh when I avoid a pheasant or a rabbit on the road... Have respec
