  4. Culachy estate by fort Augustus apparently had a huge kennel of working deerhounds at one time. The lovat hotel used to have huge scratch marks on the oak panel walls where they were kept between the wars. I heard a story that a tramp unfortunately wandered into the yard and they nearly tore his arm off. Lea McNally covered them along with pics in one of his books. I'll dig it out.
  5. I used to sneak up on this guy sleeping in the heather
  6. It is a stunning island I used to work in the woods there. I know a guy who shot a red stag there and when he got up to gralloch it found it had a tag in its ear. He checked with locals on Raasay , Rona and and Skye to see who had tagged it and he and found out eventually that it had been tagged as a calf on Rum as part of the red deer research and had swam off Rum onto Skye and then over onto Raasay. Look at a map that is an amazing journey for a stag.

  13. I was on the hill last week . Stunning views and snow drifts waist deep. Came in above a herd of hinds and watched them for about half an hour with the bins. The lab was fascinated watching them . The photos of them didn't come out good enough to post.

The Scottih Gamekeeper Association ,SGA are asking all their members show restraint on how many they shoot this year and shoot later once migrant birds have arrived as the latest surveys by game conservancy wildlife trust have shown numbers have significantly dropped in recent years , from 2003 to 2013 -numbers have dropped by around 29%.
  15. Kids wanted to build a new duck hide on the shore so did that this afternoon. Great fun with them and it keeps them interested. This was the easy bit. The youngest announced as we walked home she wants to put out a pot and catch a big lobster before she goes back to school .
  16. On the shore , no ducks so did a little beach combing .
  17. Its not about the money but you have to be treated well . We have lots of shoots locally so they have to look after the beaters. On the shoots I beat on we get bacon rolls and tea and coffee when you turn up in the morning. One does sausages at elevensies . Both do full sit down lunch , with cheese and biscuits and tea and coffee and then at end of the day teas and coffees and home baking and £30 and as many birds to take away as you want. Both do cracking keepers day at end of season where everyone who has beat and picked up gets to shoot , again full lunch and full dinner laid on.
  18. I have had meindl glockner for 4 years and they have taken an amazing amount of punishment week in week out and are getting a bit tired now. They have great boots. I have Haix Pro Trekker boots for work and they are a bit heavy but they are a brilliant pair of boots . I have walked miles in them in all weathers and they have never let in water.
  19. Classic My brother and I must have been about 12 and 13 and reading the shooting news decided we had to make our own lamping kit. The lamp was an old rectangular inspection light with a cone made from cardboard and covered in black masking tape , this was to narrow the beam !! As we read this was vital. We then read about red filters so set to work with the red felt tip pens. But the best was it was powered by old leaky motorbike battery carried in army haversack. Aye , it splashed everywhere , eventually rotted the haversack , countless shirt tails and tops of jeans. But we had g

They can burn the eyes , ears , neck and attack all exposed skin making any sort of concentration impossible. You can't set a net, cast , look through a scope , lay still , hide in heather lurk in the woods . They can choke a victim by clogging the air so thick you are breathing them in I have seen them drive lurchers , terriers and sheepdogs to distraction. I can sell you some of the west coasts finest most aggressive strains at a very reasonable rate All you have to do is find
