  1. Great pics. Nothing beats being on the hill at dusk or dawn. Your black and tan lurcher look s proper hill fit , a real credit to you.
  2. I dug out a few pics , sorry for the quality they were on a disposable camera
  3. You never know what your going to find. Fish boxes are handy for tool boxes and log baskets. Rope / twine / net for the garden You sometimes get driftwood which is hardwood and makes cracking shelves and some looks good but when dried cracks but it still makes really good kindling. Last month a neighbours kid found a goose neck tag and got the details back where it was tagged in Iceland and its mate and where they migrated to and from. But it's just the best thing mucking about on the shore
  4. I only made a few and the last one. I was totally captivated by it. The journey through the night to get there , the crowds , the beatline getting closer and the slipper and the judge. I 'll never forget it . On the last one an old irish gentleman standing by us turned as the last course finished and said " that's it lads , that's it all finished " he shook our hands and tears were running down his cheek.
  5. I was out beachcombing at the weekend . The kids and the dog love it.
  6. Apparently so, i googled it because i didn't have a clue! LOLRed Tarn - Freshwater Fishing: Cragman, im very envious! Work and family commitments for me at the mo, my time will come.. 8. Looks fine mate if you click on the image.Agreed, fog can be nightmare up there. I had a bad do with it on striding edge once, on my own early one morning. There's a scramble after you come off the ridge and i lost sense of direction... ended up on the inside of the horse shoe, clinging on for dear life! LOL Is that Ullswater country country bye the way? Few pic's for practice, does my head in!! Hope these work! Stunning pics , beautiful country. What tarn is that ?
  9. Happy New Year to you all. I was out on Boxing Day for a walk in the forestry and the dog flushed 8 , so a few in now. Slainte
  10. Today was my 7th day out beating pheasants this season and there has only been a few woodcock seen in each of these days and has only ever been a couple shot each day. The weather ain't hard enough yet in the north to bring them in any numbers to Argyll . They are amazing to see the dog work them and flush them . I never call "woodcock "as they get up as I don't think it's sporting . I also think it leads guns to getting over excited and take unsafe shots.
  11. We did 8 pheasent drives today and didn't put up a single woodcock. We won't get them in until it turns cold up north.
  12. All of the above. Be polite and friendly to keepers and beaters and pickers up and be honest it's your first time and they will look after you andlikely put you in good pegs where you will have a great day . Sometimes one of the experienced pickers up will come over and keep you right as they know the. Flushing points and direction birds are heading. Don't blast low birds or shoot at your neighbours and stop shooting when you see the beaters coming in . But smile and enjoy it . Go smart ,don't were cammo gear and definitely shoot a side by side doesn't matter old or tatty it is i
  13. Hi Yesterday was out with my lab when she marked a scrubby area on the other side of the fence . She jumped the fence and through the hedge I saw her run along on a scent then work back to where she initially marked . I walked on about 200 yds and whistled her up and she returned with a rabbit with its ears chewed off and it's legs chewed off. What would do this to a rabbit ? A mate thought a cat but another said fox cubs ? There are holes near where she marked.
  14. Took the kids out first thing this morning before they got settled in with the Xbox and commonwealth games and went out looking for Chanterelles. With the dry weather and then last few days of showers thought we would find plenty . Was right , filled half a Tesco bag in a few hours . Kids thought it was great fun and really enjoyed it. We were finding more under the Norway spruce than the usual birch woods maybe better shade in the last few weeks.
  15. Sorry should have said my son is 11 and my daughter is 9.
  16. Hi I am looking for a airgun for my kids to go rabbiting. I have an old Webley Eclipse .22 which is proving too big / heavy for them . They are dead keen but getting a little disillusioned struggling with the eclipse . We have rabbiting permission 2 minutes from the house so keen to find a suitable gun for them to keep them interested. Cheers
  17. Well done mate he looks a cracker a real shooting buddy
  18. Hi mate I was in the same position last year with mallard and teal decoys and I used model paint with UV protection. It worked really well but spoke to more experienced others and they said not to worry too much about the painting as it's more a sillohette and others said at different times wildfowl look rough so having new ones and old ones can work. I was on a budget so just painted them all and they look pretty good. I spoke to an old guy and he laughed and said as a boy he had used bottles as decoys and that being able to keep still , quiet and call was more important than f
  19. Hi mate Look in highland papers as there have been quite a few jobs recently as stalking estates get their seasonal ghillies and river watchers. Press and Journal , Oban Times and West Highland Free Press are all worth watching . Best of luck.
  20. Hi craggers Inverness museum used to have a large taxidermy collection of highland wildlife from highland sporting estates. I know the wildcats were recently being sampled for possible locations where pure strains may have existed. You might want to contact them. Also the Inverness courier has an amazing archive which covered any news from the highland estates and farms. It's a fascinating subject.
  21. Hi Gaffer If you want unusual or unique you get good Gaelic names. A few I have heard are Slioch which means Spear Fruan which means the Nose Camus which means Bay Buildhe which is yellow ,pronounced booey , a good one for cream or yellow lurchers Coire which is a big natural bowl in the mountain Hope these help
  22. And what you have described does exactly that (respect the fox) whilst it may be hard on any fox population in that area during lambing/breeding season in reality after springtime not much, very little or any control is done in those areas during the rest of the year after the breeding/lambing season so other foxes move into the ground hence why the same dens are visited year after year it doesn't wipe out the population but controls it during a critical period. For me it's about a balance of control which if done right can keep numbers under control whilst also allowing the area to re popula
  23. There is two different things on this post. Many of the lads on here work terriers for sport . Getting out and working their dogs at weekend and holidays and fair play to them. There are also guys who have been criticised for being shooters and spoiling sport by lamping with the rifle and digging cubs for game birds or retaining permission or just fair weather hunters who dig cubs which may make the sporting lads sick but their aims are totally different. Here in North West highlands keepers / hill shepherds will from now on check all dens they know with the terriers but as spring approache
