If Deerhounds Aren't What They Were
kranky replied to No eye deer's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
My half cross from back in the day. Even at 32"TTS there was nothing clumsy or slow about him. This dog excelled at killing foxes. -

Get them out young enough and they'll work. He was about 6 months here and we had a day out with the shotgun. My dogs are out with me from young pups, they come fishing, shooting, ferreting, shopping, on school runs, to the beach, basically everywhere I go. By the time they are 9 months to a year there isn't much they haven't seen and they start working from then. -
It's an early Christmas gift!

I'll knock you up a set at the weekend.

If Deerhounds Aren't What They Were

I should imagine they would. -
The real close shots are the easiest to mess up!! I've had countless shots that I've missed because I was too close. With the .38 conicals I've had a complete pass through on a squirrels rib cage at 12 yards and smashed a bunnies head open, exposing its brain at 20 yards.
-
The .38 conicals are about 180 grains and the .44/40 ones are 240 grains. They both fly flat and I've made kills past 20 yards with both. (With witnesses!! LOL)

Speed, chilled out, speed, intelligence, speed, stamina, speed, able to run any land, speed. Did I mention the fact that they're fast? -
I always use 30mm to 25mm over 245mm. It's easy enough to draw but still punches all manner of ammo out at decent speed.

That's not true. Hardly anyone with an opinion has seen them or their crosses work. People who've seen them work or work them, know that they're still capable. -
If I could work out how to change the font colour and size on my iPhone, you'd be bang in trouble!

Sometimes I scare myself because I just don't care!

Timewaster!!! Why would you say that.... Unfortunately, J1985 is a moron. I have to deal with him on a daily basis and act as his carer. He's classed as a vulnerable adult. If you could kindly refrain from making my words bigger and changing their colour I'd really appreciate it. I don't want to get into an Internet font war, but if pushed I'll quote you using pink in size 72!

Anyone Out Later Its Blowing A Gale Here ;)

It's not my fault!!! I forgot that a days digging with the hunt involved a trip to the pub and a long drive home! I didn't get in until 3am and I'm virtually an elderly man! Tonight looks good though. -
Timewaster!!!

the thing what makes me laugh is I know fully well that if a lad had a young dog he needed to start off ...............he/she preban wouldn't be looking if its this years fox...........if they have squeeled a fox right in .......whever or not its this years or not,.........on the lamp/daytime......that young dog will be slipped .....guaranteed,...........with the adrenalin going and one looking right at you 15 ft away,.....they will slip.... :yes:and what I don't get is that this years cubs wont bite.lol...........I can tell you that preban in September a cub bit a hound and it was enough for

Lol!! It does tear and there is a bit of noise. But the thing is, everyone is different and every type of elastic shoots differently, you'll need to try a few different set ups until you can be sure which one is best for you. Half the fun of shooting catapults is trying different methods and seeing what you feel is best.

I make loads from Hawthorn. It's nice for catties. You can work them into all sorts of shapes and they have a nice finish. My favourite fork is a plain apple one that has had nothing more done to it than the bark scraped off and a bit of sanding. I've taken loads of game with it. No one criticises it because it does the job better than loads of prettier forks. Ignore anyone that isn't pleased for you, it just shows what sort of a person they are. You can pity them but don't take any notice of them. How are you finding the triple black bands?

Whippet 99's point about a dog that is started on cubs and then getting hammered when it tries to take on an adult is 100% correct. Out of all the people who start a dog on cubs, how many of you go out in the summer to start a young dog on bunnies that are just out of the nest? They'll give a dog a load of confidence, they can't run very fast and sometimes don't even see the dog as a threat.
-
If your dog was too young to deal with an adult fox, then you didn't slip it on any. If your dog was going to do them it would do them. Some dogs never did, some dogs did and always got smashed up but went back for more and some dogs excelled at them. I could understand people wanting to let a dog see one so that it realised that they were quarry but, if there was no experienced dog to show the way then you'd have to resort to snare, trap or gun.

invasive avian species this was the exact words my FLO told me to put pigeons That's nonsense!! LOL!! Another example of an FLO making stuff up. Pigeons, both Wood and Feral are native birds and not invasive. Having that condition on your ticket means that most of the birds on the general licence are out of bounds, as is ground game and vermin. Your FLO has, in effect, given you a gun that you can use for Ring Necked Parakeets, Canadian geese, Ruddy ducks and other oddities. I'd get those conditions changed. Mine is for vermin.
-
Yes it can but it's a pain to use. It tangles more than double gold and seems to make a lot more noise. It gets tears in it more easily than thicker material.
-
There's not that many deerhound x owners around that way. They're the only dog for the job. Maybe some bull x owners can get down there but it'll end in tears.
-
Mine does!! Is that the dog you bought to Lampfest '12? I didn't get to see how much staying power she had. We were all too busy watching my dog pull off those amazing high speed runs.Haha!!LOL! You should give block end some pointers. That bitch of yours does plenty of work and is totally driven but she ain't a pain in the arse. It's just a shame that she's a bull x!! Cheers mate, you'd have her and you know you would!! You'd just deny all knowledge of her bull blood and say she's big f**k off whippet greyhound. I'd just say that she was a racey greyhound bitch that I juiced up.
