  1. Breeding magpies hold a territory of about five hectares (12 acres) all year round. Because nest sites are limited, between 25% and 60% of magpies in an area do not breed. These non-breeding birds often form flocks with a home range of up to 20 hectares (about 50 acres) and may pair up within the flock. Magpies usually breed from two years old, although some may breed at one year. They build large, domed nests in thorny bushes or high up in tall trees. The female lays on average six greenish-blue eggs, heavily spotted with brown, in April, and incubates them for 18 to 19 days. During this ti
  2. You can trap them all year round, iv'e been catching for the last few weeks. First call bird is easy to catch without eggs or dead rabbits on top of traps. Marty
  3. Its simple, but most of what i cought where in stoppers or shallow burrows. My farm bred border collie would mark a hole and start digging at the entrence. Id find a bramble bush and snap off a good lengh, then find what ever i could to dig down to it a little, id dig down so far with the help of my stone mad collie then keep putting the bramble down till i felt the rabbit kicking at it, Then slowley start to twist it into its fur until it had a good grip on it, then just slowley pull the rabbit out. They always come out arse end first Marty
  4. Just sat reading the same old threads so thought id get a fresh one going. When i was a kid, about 8 years old i use to catch rabbits with Brambles. Does or has anyone else ever used this method. Whats the most unusual method you've used for catching rabbits Marty
  5. I've had about half a dozen this week in minutes of laying the trap. When i see them pushing soil and the hills are in a stright line...i quickley set a trap a few hills behind them then by the time i've set the next trap i've cought the one i set minutes before. Also, i always set traps in the highways that run inbetween fence posts or along the hedge lines and last week i had four in just a few days from the same run. This is my favourate way of catching as its also prevention rather than cure. Once i get the moles out of the fields, i set traps along the bounderies, this way they dont e
  6. Hey hows the jam going woz Looks like you cought the mole trapping bug, good stuff but wait till one of the sneakey short sighted little shyts gives you the run around for a week or two. Dont worrie stick at it they always run out of road eventually. I love it, theres somthing about catching somthing you cant see unless its dead in your trap. You lift a trap and smile, or on the other hand call an empty thats been set off a ba*ta*d. I do anyway Atb Marty
  7. Sorry, dont miss understand what im explaining. Im explaining how i get my first bird in the larson trap. I've always cought my first call bird, however..i've struggeld to get the first one in by useing dead animal's such as a rabbit on top or inside. It never fails me when i use the method i've explained in the above post, and by doing so i always catch the first call bird within days. Once i have the call bird my trap is none stop, 8 in a day is not unusual, if i dont catch i move to another location. When i've cought, i only put a rabbit in for the birds to feed on. If i notice
  8. Id make myself one but id only end up smashing windows with it again
  9. I grew up using a catty ,, I never saw many gypsys in the minning village I grew up in ..but I did make the wooden lead moulds .. I used to shoot anything with my catty from house sparrows off roof for ferrets ... Even had catty wars with my own made catty against my mate with his black widow.. only 1.77 airgun pellets could be shot at each other but they hurt like hell on arse .. why would you want to pay over odds for a catty.. Those lead balls are evil, not much gets up with one of them stuck in it...youd deck anything with it if you blasted it stright in the nutt
  10. I think you'll get much more pleasure making one of your own There a easy to make The ones your showing on here, personally i wouldnt give you 10 bob for them. Get yourself down the woods find a decent y branch and let it season. It will be the best cattie you ever own and one to show off to your mates and kids. Infact get a few more branches as they'll all want one
  11. Well my mate has a farm and its got magpies visiting all the time. He has 2 larsons on the go that i suplied the call birds for and hes only had 3 in it since. I've got one trap out and i've had 12 birds upto now and maybe a few more today. Im starting to think that the birds dont like something about some traps. What i've noticed about my trap and my mates trap is the dimensions are different in the depth of them, mine is only 18" deep but his is alot deeper. Im woundering if the birds arnt so confident to drop into such a deep small space. Mine is a full wier trap aswell with no
  12. Move it mate, try find where there hanging around early morning and evening. I have no trouble at all. They just keep coming, Ive had 12 in a week and its still early days Marty
  13. The gypsys i grew up with use to cut a bit of hazel or other kind of tree and just fasten a black widow sling on them with cotton and leather..farnish them up, round all the ends off and away they went. I never saw them buy one.
  14. Your taking it all way to seriouse Matt & looking into it all way to deepley, alot of people probabley dont care what you think at all...Like me..no offence. Your right about the money making organisations trying to make a fast buck out of folk that want to give moleing a blast..they Suck big time, you cant beat years of trail and error and back breaking day's of probing and digging around and getting all pissed off over a mole thats running you round like a man possesed. Lets put it this way, you wouldnt find me giving my money away to some pompuse know it all to learn how to catch an
  15. What gives you that idea? I've been trapping moles for 35 years, and I'll tell you now, there has never been so many folks trying to catch the gentleman in velvet as there is now. There is no shortage of wannabee mole trappers. Well you see most pestcontrol companys wouldnt bother with traps that muck and they would just use mole smokes, this is just my view on mole trapping but if you have a different one thats fine it just my own opinion sorry if i affended you in any way Happy Hunting Tom Wouldnt bother with traps
  16. Catties are brilliant I use to smash windows with mine.. Use to love going down the local scrap yard and blasting all the windows out of old cars, well any car would do. I even blasted out the window on my old mans Merc but he was a right tosser anyway so i did it on his Landy aswell. I shot my mate once aswell but he deserved it, he was a bit of a nobb. Must admit though, there usefull for blasting pheasent pigions and dog's and cats aswell.Well to be totaly honest there pritty dam usfull thing for a mischevuss little Ba*ta*d like i was back in the days I could take a pigions head off with
  17. Hi Stu, Im your man on this one fella. I took 168 magpies last year, i also always catch my own first bird with ease Its as simple as this.. Imagen your magpie/Larson trap come magpie feeding station, Firstly forget the crap about putting dead animals on top or inside and the whole egg thing needs forgettin.!! This is how i get my first birds...Put the trap somewhere the magpies are feeding, your back garden will be ok if you have one, I bait the top of the trap with dry cat food for a few days until the birds are feeding confidently. Then after a few days just put the food in the tra
  18. Oh dear, theres always one that thinks they where born with a silver trap in their mouths...may be that should be sphinkter
  19. I use a simpler French pincher trap for that purpose. They are only 2 euro a piece over here and ideal for that. Now then...theres the answer to the three way junction situation..Excellent. I set a talpex in a fourway junction a few days ago and cought the villan, but when i usually come up against a three way i just fill back in. Excellent...Thank's Everyday is a school day Marty.
  20. Spot on Tom Yep, I've had 6 in the last 3 day's so not doing to bad, 2 of them this morning. I'll probably have another 1 or 2 by this evening. The magpie's are pairing around here at the moment so they tend to be in large group's of 6/8 and more, I've got the trap in a place where there gathering so they'll just keep coming...HOPFULLY!! The trap Im using took 168 birds last season so I hope its as good as last year. Marty
