Nice work there young Tom...Welcome to THL Forum. Im a Cumbrian myself, its good to see a young fella like yourself showing such an interest in a seemingley difficult subject such as catching moles..It can be pritty frusrating at times and dam right hard work even for the older generation. Keep up the good work, and keep us informed of your progress. Good Luck & Happy Trapping Marty.

I use scissor traps all the time, but once the trap is set i dont fill in with soil. I place grass in but not so it goes into the run, keep the run clear.!! Once Iv got the grass in place i put the soil on top of the grass..I dont seem to have problems using this method, the run is compleatly clear of soil and grass and he confidntley carrys on running through the run till he hits the trigger mechinisem. With the talpex trap, i put a bridge of compacted soil right under the trigger so the mole has to dig into it and sets off the trigger. Marty.

Sorry just clicked on, you've already got a bird They'll go in..best time is early morning when its quiet and late evening.. Last year i was trapping between 2 and 8 a day but remember its still early days and come spring and summer you'll be none stop trapping them. Marty

What food you using.? I use cheap dry cat food, they love it. Dont do the egg thing you'll get nowhere, or the dead rabbit on top. Feed them on the top of the trap till there use to landing and feeding with confidence. Then tie a food bowl leavel with the pirch inside the trap, no need to put food on top once you put it in the trap as you want them to go inside to feed. Look at it this way.. Your trap is basiclly a feeding station for magpies just be patiant and it will all come together. If I knew how Id put a film clip on here to show you just how easy it is. . Good luck, and

Be patiant mate, Magpies are very intelligent, there the kind of birds along with crow, jackdaws and jays that are good at working out puzzel's..if theres food in your trap IT WILL GO IN. Try not to disturb them and stay out of sight. Its only a matter of time mate. By the sound of it , if you have them visiting now there will be one or more in it by late morning today. ATB Marty

The males tend to be the better call birds.. the more dominant he is the better he'll call. Youl know you have a good one when he kills any of the birds you put in with him..keep him as long as possible Dont worry about a bird that seems mute, take it out of the area you cought it, these birds are very territorial and it wont take long before another bird from a new area comes to investigate it. The above post is also good advice . Marty

For you budget id be looking at a s410 secondhand..you might be lucky enought to find someone selling a bottle included at that price. Personally id save the pennys and get a HW100 secondhand you wont go wrong with one of them..or the s410 at that. Marty.

Hey chaps, just woundering has anyone tryed using Trapline traps? I was thinking of getting a few to try out on the runs between fence posts and shallow runs near the edges of the fields. Marty.

Hi chap's, had the trap out in the garden now for just over a week, came back from the gym this morning and one bird had gone in. My method of catching the first bird is quite simple. Put the trap out for a few days in your chosen spot for a few days with no food near it, then after a few days put dry cat food on the top...no need for a bowl as it will only get knocked off. After a few days the birds will get confident landing on top. When you see them on top feeding, its time to put a bowl of food inside. I tie it to the cage so its leavel with the broken perch. No need to put food

I get my own but only bought this house last july and the bloke next door is a bird lover and a bit of an Anti. Had the trap in the back garden now for a week and 2 maggies where on it today till him next door came out to fill up his feeding stations, then evertime they came back he desided to go out in his garden...the mans driving me up the wall. Came home from checking the traps and i only had a bloody black and white cat in it. Theres always tomorrow.!! The birds seem confident enough feeding off the top of the trap so ill bide my time for another week or so, then if that fails il just tak

I agree with what you lads are saying about the more expencive traps compleatly, all im trying to get across is i have a few cheapos that are doing just fine at the moment. As for the A Fenn scissor trap's if you set them in tight there excellent. I use a knife to cut into the turf and dig into the run, keeping it about about 2" square, then tap it open with a T handle off an old spade then shove the trap in and set it off a few times to make tracks in the base of the run. If i can get them in as so..its a dead mole..end of. When iv finnished catching moles out in the fields i leave traps in t

I can relate to alot of what you say, in your second paragraph.I also like the fenn scissor, and i used it exclusively for a few years.Handy wee trap. What kind of capture rate do you achieve with it?,i usually only averaged about 50%.I do ok with them, unless like recentley iv had lambs and sheep lying on them and disterbing them one way or another and the odd stone fall in that stops them closing fully. Do you know of a trap with 100% catch rate.?

I had 168 maggpies in my trap last year. Try feeding them with dog food..dry or meat. Keep it on top for a few days, then one of the days just put the food in the trap sections and they'll go in for it. Just got my trap out for the same thing but all the other birds in my garden are beating them to it at the moment. Marty

Thats where i get my talpex..but iv seen them on ebay 10 for £19.99 + £7.00 p&p exactly the same.
-
I guess it depends what traps your buying. I use scissor type traps, A Fenn, Talpex and i have a few cheap scissor type that i got off ebay witch work just fine and this is there second season. I use them in places that i know have a good chance of getting found by unwanted eyes. Id rather lose £2 rather than £6 and as iv said, there strong and do the job just fine. Im a self tought mole catcher so i havnt been brain washed by money making organisation, iv never been on a course, im not a registerd mole catcher, i learned by trail and error. Infact if id listened to half the crap some people

Flipping hech...id be lucky to get a tin of pellets of my mississ all id get is moan moan moan...look after the pennys and the pounds will look after them selves Atb Marty
