so no tips then.

I will choose a squatter everytime for a pup. Nothing worse than a lurcher not lifting squatters on the lamp.
-
I have been lamping a good 26 years but just bringing on this pup, he is great switching rabbits on the lamp and looks where i shine the light. I totally agree with not spooking them by shining to the side that one I do use too.
-
Any tips to share for knacks in shining the lamp that can sometimes push a rabbit onto squat? I can sometimes nearly be sure when a rabbit is going to squat (get it wrong the odd time) but find if I am lamping a rabbit, the rabbit next to it about 20-30 feet away will usually be hesitant and go onto squat. So I go through all the motions as though I am about to lamp the rabbit in the beam but at the last second switch to the squatter. Works for me, especially as I am training a 6 1/2 month old lurcher so getting him up onto squatters is great for bringing him on. I'll always lamp r

Anyone with a Polecat Hob in N.I. for sale?
RTurlough replied to RTurlough's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I am based in the Sperrin Mountains but always up the road round Glenavy and Moira. I dont have a mobile either, thought I was the only person left in the world who doesn't own a mobile phone. -
Just lost my only polecat hob to a fox this week. Would anyone in Northern Ireland here have a polecat Hob they could part with?

hey Big Napper, any chance of Pm'ing me that number of the lad in lancashire?
-
I dropped my hob into one of my best rabbit setts only for him to lie up. Dropped a jill in lower holes, rabbit flew out with half his head removed then the jill for the first time in her life walked out and wouldn't go back in, never seen that kind of damage before on a rabbit in such a short space of time. Still no sign of the hob and waited for another hour as it was a huge warren, big fox bolted throwing a net. Dug down to the hob and there he was dead. I know where his den is so his cards are marked. Raging as this was a great hob who always pulled rabbits out of a dead end r

Fitness And Conditioning (Skycat) Running Dog Maintenance
RTurlough replied to paulus's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Sky Cat, your article was first class. It is so easy to skim over and by pass an article such as this but even after 2 decades of owning and working gundogs, lurcher and terrier your words are a brilliant reminder to us all of the workload a dog can take at a specific age. I had a young dog pull a muscle just from playing in the garden the very second it got out of the pen and it has taken weeks to recover but we are finally seeing daylight. It has meant I have missed the better part of Autumn exercising the dog and going through a vet check and antiinflammatories. Time and money. -
Thanks a million. I have several Jill's now and two hobs to cover them to keep the bloodlines right so that is my ferret stock full. Really appreciate you taking the time to offer me your ferret. Rabbit numbers are really down this year too in many places so I think we are all going to have to work harder this year to make ferreting days count.

When you get to use all the features its first class. The collar used gps to get a location. So does the box, but the collar talks to the box using radio signal. If you get a funny reading do a quick 30sec calibration. Other than that it is some of the radio signal bouncing of really dense cover. It searches every 3 seconds (collar transmitting to box) so the funny signal won t last long. Battery life (rechargeable) lasts 40 hours. Pretty good kit.

Did you guys break through rock on the left of that photo??? nothing too tough eh!

On my day off I decided to scour the best international hunting websites. This is absolutely the best thread i have read with some hard-core hunting photos to back up its all guts and glory. If THL posts where all like this it would without doubt be the best in the world. WELL DONE LADS!

Where are you based Foxtrot.......roughly?

A Dogtrace x20 is a fantastic tracker at half the price, does 9 dogs up to 20km. Has a fence function and motion detector. The motion detection radius can be set to varying distances so say your hound is on a fox set which has a 20m radius the handset will omit a beep and vibration so you know a fox has went to ground. You can also change the time a dog is motionless before your handset beeps and vibrates so you know for definite your dog is spending considerable time in one spot. Dogtrace have got this so right for the hunter.

How to tape up a tracking collar so it does not come off?
RTurlough replied to RTurlough's topic in Hunting With Hounds
I have to keep the original collar on AND also add the tracking collar so as well as taping up the buckle on the tracker I think I will cable tie the two collars together. -
Sounds like bull beef if they all bailed in.

Hi Guys, I would like to show you a pup I bred for Big Game Hunting. This is a Bavarian Mountain Hound x Irish Staff. He is a male pup and I am keeping his two sisters who are the female version of this male. I have a surplus of two males and three females that are available (see classifieds). Has anyone on here experience of seeing Bavarian Mountain Hound x Staff cross in a working capacity? This is a cross I have never seen before and for my own hunting have decided to add something to the mix as both the father and mother are already formidable. In fact it is just me taking t

Hi Guys, I would like to show you a pup I bred for Big Game Hunting. This is a Bavarian Mountain Hound x Irish Staff. He is a male pup and I am keeping his two sisters who are the female version of this wee champ. Has anyone on here experience of seeing Bavarian Mountain Hound x catch dogs in a working capacity? This is a cross I have never seen before and for my own hunting have decided to add something to the mix as both the father and mother are already formidable. In fact it is just me taking two great dogs that I own and exploring what happens when they are combined.

Hi guys, I have been working a Bavarian Mountain Hound with great success on deer and have now had the good fortune of acquiring a Bull bitch to add to the cross. The question I would like to ask is "are there any international, Irish or British hunters who have experience in Bavarian Bull cross pups working the capacity of large or dangerous game?". Pups can be viewed in the working dogs classifieds but here are the Sire and Dam and a male pup:
