On the county boundary between Derry and Tyrone living in the heart of the Sperrin mountains.

Young in the holes, rabbits would be more reluctant to bolt then. I bolted and caught a fox on Saturday, posted it up. First ever!

Norseman and me where out ferreting a few weekends ago, had the purse nets and long nets all rigged up......then a mink came running up from the stream at the bottom of the hill, dropped into the holes we had just spent an hour netting and it started killing everything! It was huge and we couldn't believe the speed of this thing bouncing across the hill back and forth through all the holes. We had been putting our arms down the holes all day and I dread to think how painful a full on mink bite would be!!!!

Jax13 has it in one. Live trap with bacon tied to the trigger plate. I bait all my mouse and rat traps with bacon and have even laid a trap which went off as I was walking away from it, chancey mouse that was built like Goliath.

You guys hunting in the US must be great fun, I mean, you's have bears and mountain lions running all round the place! Kinda takes walking in the woods to a whole new level!

If you hunt with anyone that is talking while walking up to holes, thudding their feet, coughing, smoking or doing anything that is not being a ninja round the rabbit holes.......give them a clip round the ear! This includes leaving the ferret box on top of the warren while setting nets (keep it a good 50yds away) and if you have a spade or spit don't be striking it into the earth once you get to holes you are about to start netting. Set everything down gently, tiptoe, get your nets set, open the box really quietly and put the ferret down. Once is an accident, twice is coincidence and third

I have never lost a ferret to a fox but I tell ya what, if I did I would be ragin!

It's when you look down at the net after seeing it bolt and thinking "Yeeeeees! This is going to be fun!". It got me thinking how many times we go out trying every fox hole in the country and not a fox to be found.

Have you went out when it's windy or have you someone with you coughing, banging their feet? Maybe your ferret is too good this year and has caught the jist of running in and hanging on to one? But even then you should get another bolting. Frig, this would wreck my head if I had to dig to a ferret everytime when out!

In Ireland here and on the weekend there I was out by myself (when all the good things tend to happen) and bolted a fox from an 8 hole rabbit warren with a silver jill entered for her first time. Wee jill worked fantastic the whole day before bolting the fox and I would have swore she had been doing it for years but this was her first day out. I am 36 and I have waited all my life to catch a fox out ferreting. I thought I had lost it for a moment when the peg came out but managed to scruff it. Hardest part was getting hold of a completely fresh fox with my hands only, no spade or br

Well my fur hungry brethren, I have a bit of a query which I am hoping some of those who have a great deal of experience in fox trapping can advise on. I have a huge sheet of thick marine ply and mesh (fine but heavy duty) left from a terrier box I made and want to expand my knowledge to make a live fox trap for the lambing period. I don't want my trap to have that long stick coming out the top as a fulcrum which many sites post but instead want something much more easily carried round the glens during lambing. Would anyone have good photos of a trap which they find successful but mos

Well, I have made a bit if breakthrough with this jill. I'm feeding her tiny bits if meat out of my fingers. She is longer grabbing my fingers and this is great because instead of just latching onto my hand she is sniffing round my fingers to see if she can find the meat. So now fingers are not a thing to try and bite off and I can still pick her up while she is eating, so getting there slowly but surely.

I am hoping to get some advice on anyone skilled in making purse nets. I have a few quick questions....... 1). What are the essential tools required and how much nylon/hemp is needed to make 1 net? 2). Where do you buy your rings, nylon and white chord? 3). Where do you buy your tool for tying a net and what is it called? 4). How long does it normally take to tie a net and do you normally do tie them in the house i.e. tie it to a door handle for handiness? Any other do's and don'ts when tying and how do you get that oval effect in the net. One other thing, how do y

That is the worst kind of failure, you use the word cull by which you mean spade. How would I get my kicks on non-hunting days if I didn't have this jill, she is a great test of bravery everyday when trying to lift out the metal dish with my barehands but there is a question still unanswered. What shaped such a great looking jill to behave this way, lack of handling from her former home and fear is my guess. Attempting to handle this jill is a great part of my day. I get to see the real fire, speed and bite force of a ferret and while I enjoy handling my 10 other ferrets going to the D

Lads we all have our ways and ZeusPolecat you have a good point and I know what you mean. I found this clip and although I am not gonna use a clicker as it has no use in my world of working ferrets but I like the idea of just letting the jill go mental on a glove til it realises biting is a waste of time. I'll replace the clicker noise in this clip with my own voice. The ferret in this clio is a bit emaciated as my jill has 5 times the fire and about 3 times the weight but the glove is a great way of diffusing that aggression. but as they say, the glove has to come off sometime. Some l

Many would say don't breed her. To tell you the truth, I can't wait to see the kits from this Jill, she is a pure greyhound and if I could work her would cut my ferreting time in half although I might have to dig her more than a few of my other Jills which would be that bit more placid and less aggressive in holding onto or killing a rabbit. When it comes to breeding her, I have kept ferrets for over 26 years and never had a ferret that nails its handler on opening a hutch. I have people who say put a knuckle into her mouth I say......ok pick that ferret up first.......how do you pick up

I have a problem and need a quick answer that does NOT include flicking a ferret on the nose or trying to put a knuckle down its throat or even using vinegar anti-bite spray. I have a jill that is a year old. She is an albino that I have (never ever named a ferret before) nicknamed Demon because this is what she is. I give her the best beef and can touch her when she is eating, lift her while she chews and stroke her. All good. I never try to lift her with meat smell or fairy liquid smell on my hands. Now if I try to handle her once I open the hutch.....BOOM!.........straight on

Bit of a long shot at this time of year but anyone in N.I. got a ferret or two (yeah or two, flipping like hens teeth trying to get one!). Very experienced handler just took a long break and really looking forward to getting back to all the old school hunting this winter. Can collect and willing to travel a bit for one. Can pm mobile number.

Blood tracking if you know any deer stalkers, great way to enter stalking, always needed by those who stalk as a lost animal after a shot is common and you never know, next year you could be shooting reds!
