Not sure about the white meat for bait thing. My brother-in-law is a registered fisherman in Scotland, fishes creels for lobsters and crab. It is ILLEGAL to use chicken or rabbit for bait as it makes the lobsters poisonous to eat (or at least that is the reason he told me he can't use them) - stinky salted mackerel are his bait and he relies on catching lobbies for their living. It might be worth asking about the suitability of animal flesh for bait if you intend to eat them....fish bait would be fine I am sure. Tin of pilchards/ Although you are probably just as well using a fish caught i

That was a close call. I like brindles for the same reason. Even a light brindle breaks up the outline.

I know it is a continental round and we tend to be led by those emigrants across the Atlantic (they need to remember which is the Mother Land!) but does anyone use this fine calibre, or is it still outnumbered by the 270 and 30-06 users? (Seeing as how they are the same cartridge)

That entertained my breakfast nicely. The kedgeree tasted all the better! Thank you.

T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE, MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE. I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY, WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO, IN THIS HOME, DID LIVE. I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE. NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES, OF FAR DISTANT LANDS. WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBER THOUGHT, CAME THROUGH MY MIND. FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY, I FOUND TH

Great stuff. I am sure other people will enjoy these tales. It is only a bit of fun, after all. I have a couple of others, but I'll save them and let other people in first.

Field Marshall - when you are running these rabbits, do you shake the lamp? If you shake the lamp as the rabbit runs, it confuses the rabbit and gives the dog more of a chance. I have turned rabbit saway from the hedge before simply by shaking the lamp. They get disorientated a bit and that slight falter in their step is all the dog needs! If he misses and stands, seemingly ignoring your recall, turn the lamp off (as everyone has said). CLOSE YOUR EYES, your night vision will return much faster - 20 seconds at leastis needed. Close your eyes and count to 20, slowly....1 million, 2 million

.20 in the new year ?????
Acuspell replied to Buster321c's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
I have .20. Had it for a while. A Theoben Taunus, built as a special order with a Fenman ambidextrous stock though, rather than the right hand dedicated stock they were usually issued with. It is a great rifle and I like the 20 cal, it just has more knock down than .177 (which I also have in a similar type of rifle, the Theoben Olympus, which does have a thumbhole stock) The Taunus 20 is the one I really pick up first to go hunting. It isn't as pin point accurate as the Olympus, but that is the rifle and pellet, not the calibre but it fills the game bag very efficiently and I have had some -
While I was typing I think the ruined topic was removed, because i got a notification that I didn't have permission to reply to it. Why do people have to spoil things? If you don't agree with something, bring a cohesive arguement and say your piece, politely. If you have nothing to actually add, then keep quiet and read what others have to say. Stirring simply wastes pages, causes the thread to lose its direction and any good stuff disappears down the page count. The other thing that bugs me is, why can't people write properly? I am not on about spelling or grammer, but using numbers for words

Get the date of their meeting(s) and go and watch - fantastic craic and good sport. BUT, leave your dog at home.

You replied just as I was typing....glad to see it is getting sorted. He is not the sort of chap to rip people off. Quite the opposite in fact, he does a lot of work for no payment to get youngsters going and especially for disabled shooters. A top chap!

I think you'll find it is just a batch of O-rings that you can't tell until you try them. HW had exactly the same problem with O-rings on the 100s when they first came out. New Orings sorted it and I am sure it is only the compound of the O-rings on Adi's cylinders too. I bet he has already been on to the O-ring supplier and got them changed. Don't blame the £130 cylinder for a 5p O-ring!

What would you say is best for rabbit?
Acuspell replied to panther82's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
A good rabbiting dog is one that has been well trained and has enough rabbits to get practise on - not rabbits that bolt as soon as they see the flicker of a light because they have been tormented night after night though. Rabbits that have hardly seen a lamp are very useful, you need a dog to catch a few in order to learn. If you take a youngster onto well lamped ground you have a recipe for frustration. The pup doesn't stand a chance against a rabbit that only has 10 hops to go to ground - it will run at disappearing rabbits all night, not catch one and get it into its head that it is a wast -
There used to be a place on Exmoor that allowed rough shooting and rabbiting with a lurcher - you had to rent their cottage of course. There are a few places in Scotland that do it too. On Skye you can get a bit of rabbiting on the in by for the asking, provided the sheep are "up on the hill". It isn't such a daft question. It is how you ask that makes the difference.

pup at 14 weeks 21tts what will he make
Acuspell replied to oneshot1986's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
You had better buy a saddle! -
Don't forget to ensure they can drink - hard running will dehydrate a dog very quickly. Sugars and salts in the drink - just like a sports drink for athletes. Running a dog hard is no different ot a long distance athlete competing. Th eold trick of a cup of tea certainly sharpens a dog, but only for a short period. The cafeine enhances the dehydration effect.

Antis? Get yourself a compressor that runs off the cigarette socket. Run the engine as you do it though - otherwise you might flatten the battery!

Crackers! Look at those eyes and muzzle. Lovely. Bit of collie in the black one? Ear carriage and tail looks as though there might be back along.

The chances are it will snow in hell first!

Fly and her pups - now with some video clips
Acuspell replied to Acuspell's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Jasrae, we were calling squirrels, it was only a couple of months ago, when we had that first warm spell and the squirrels were out in numbers. I wanted some more tails for my fly tying! Sat, calling which is why she is sat beside me as spotter - she can see and hear them long before I can, but she also knows when we are shooting them from a sit, or hide, not to go running in. Out walking, that is a different matter. She knows the difference between the shotgun and rifle too. Stalking on the hill, or in the woods she will stay within a couple of paces, just so she doesn't get trodden on, b -
Fly. Now 8 and still hunting well. This was last year. Now got pups, similar type. Bedlington and whippet base. Game, agile, fast, brave, very intelligent and trainable. This one is championship material. His markings are perfectly symmetrical.

First up is my September 1995, Theoben Olympus in .177. Still one of my favourite rifles.

Tips for training a lurcher pup
Acuspell replied to foxhunter2011's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
The training of whatever action or skill MUST BE enjoyable for the pup. If it likes what it does (because it is fun) and it gets loads of praise for doing it, it will continue to do it. It is an association thing. If it associates GOOD THINGS with retrieving (loads of praise and a little tit bit sometimes) it will associate retrieving with getting praise and a little treat. If it does something WRONG, do not force the issue. Do something else straight away to take its mind off it. Otherwise you can reinforce the WRONG association and the pup remember the scolding more than the praise. PA
