Joseph you could try an SL terrier similar to a short leg Russell and they will do the job if breed right atb

I would also try lettin him keep the toy occasionally I have found they are more willing to return if you just give them a good fuss sometimes an dot take the toy. I personally wild play tug but everyone is different , not purely because of the hard mouth issue but easentially you are encouraging the dog to compete for items which I don't think helps in the long run. Sounds like his is just bored of tevhame at that point little an often helps jmo atb

Good video, thanks for posting very similar to the way I like to hunt. Nice mark from the lurcher should have some fun with them 2 atb

Your Views On Pup Growling At People Approaching
matt1979 replied to flipbull's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Sounds like guarding behaviour to me whether you or the space ie car. Had a few guarding breed dogs and i find they need a lot more socialisation than many other dogs if they are too grow up stable. Ask your yourself what you do when he displays this behaviour because it is only likely I get stronger as he gets older. Personally I would be correcting it firmly but calmly if your confident that he is guarding as I can't see a lot of benefits in a running dog and plenty of downsides. I have one here now that will guard naturally, I allow one bark generally and make it known that is enough she ha -
It's a bouvier des Flandres bird generally a healthy breed but as you probably know big heavy dogs often don't make double figures age wise. In truth I have done slog of running with the dog in the past, she would regularly do 10-15 miles with me, not really the best idea with a heavy breed but she enjoyed it at the time perhaps paying the price now though. Going to look into a few suggestions and see if they help cheers

The dog in question has never been a working dog as such she was used as a house guard when I was in the forces and away from the house/ mrs a lot. Can't fault her at guarding and she still will guard, problem being by the time she would have gotten out of her bed any robbers would have loaded the van and been half way down the m6. Sure she will be with us for a while yet as she is a tough cookie no question about that. Just always a concern when they are tough whether they are in pain if that makes sense. Had other dogs that would limp with a feather stuck to there leg atb

My old mans lurcher beddie grey x will enter cover occasionally to get at stuff and he is 23tts but in truth it's not something that is encourage because more times than not the rabbit will bolt and he is knackered trying to get out and run, much rather a runner that reads the smaller dog and hangs back a little easier said than done though When they want in on the action When he does catch in cover it's nearly always myxi rabbits as anything fit and healthy will move through the cover hence the need for smaller dogs that an really pressure in cover, just my experience on the lad we hunt atb

In truth gafer she isn't far off that to be honest, she won't get out of bed in the morning (obviously I could force her out) when she does finally surface she alls like john Wayne and is clearly very stiff whether she is in pain? Only she knows really, Will carry as we are and let her do as much as she likes really. Just tough to watch them get old seemingly so quick cheers

Got an old dog here ( not a runner) that has really slowed last 5 months or so, 9 year old this year and a big heavy dog. She has been all over the country with me and can't really fault her loyalty. My point is this is the first old dog I have had of my own, lost plenty as a kid but never my own dog as such. She is down to one walk a day as she clearly ain't keen to go out in the mornings anymore. Tough things is this dog is tough as old boots had a few serious injuries etc in the past and never whined moaned or anything so knowing when she is in pain is a tough call. Had her to he vets and s

Clean spade I see you point I don't really work that type of land in all honesty so get your point. No doubt on some land the exta leg could be useful to see over stuff as well I guess. Although most of the terriers I have worked of any size seem to have their nose glued to the ground when there is anything about atb. Out for 3 hrs this morning early doors not much about to be honest, out again now for evening walk. My old mans lurcher had a couple of good runs but he is started to creek. Sure some people could ware this SLT pup out but i sure can't, wouldn't want it any other way though to be

Clean spade in what way do they struggle genuine question, as most Of the older dogs working terriers and other types I have seen of the 60s 70s (I wasn't around) were a lot shorter in leg than today's dogs from the pics I have seen and the dogs that have been in my family. Is it simply they struggle with the heavy going ground or are you saying they lack stamina cheers

I don't have any experience with collie x lurchers but have seen plenty of collies working in my families farm to see they have good qualities , some bad too that don't seem to get mentioned much lol. I have plenty of experience with greyhounds though as several members of my family have raced them and worked them I am always a bit surprised on thl how many people seem to think they are useless bad feet, no stamina injury prone etc no doubt some are, but in my experience many aren't. They may be more injury prone than lurcher but if you think closely about it they generally are considerable fa

Had similar with a pup a few years back any sort of bone she would guard with a growl as a young pup and show teeth. Not something I have seen with other pups but she soon learned I wasn't a threat and it was obviously an effective method with her litter mates. I went down the route of hand feeding for a few weeks intermittent again and using a bowl to place food in and let her eat bits slowly. As she grew I purposefully stroked her as she ate on a regular basis and hand feed occasionally. With high value bones I just made a habit of making her come to me for them and would swap them for high

That's my experiences as well clean spade but others seem to catch a lot, I have found a decent rabbit gives the runners a good run in the daytime but I guess again that relates to the land you hunt atb

Should say body condition when talking about the myxi rabbits

Some good points. I suppose it is about where you work as I said the hedgerows in the fields I work are very thick and tight in parts and a small dog can really move through these where I would have thought a bigger dog would struggle. The rabbits also only leave cover when really pushed hard and I would worry they would give larger dogs the run around I may well be wrong. Willow when you mentioned you prefer around the 14 tt mark to allow them to work allday, does this mean you have found smaller dogs wanting? Genuine question as work max 4 hours generally and none of the dogs short or l

Always interested to see the size of people's dogs used for bushing. I have grown up with various terriers and they all seemed to be naturals. Some went to ground many didn't. My point being these dogs were all small around 10 tts max, but many of the dogs I see on tho are much bigger even many of today's terriers seem to be being breed larger. Is there not a real benefit to small size. The lucas pup I have at the minute will get in pretty much anyway a rabbit can get and can pressure well as she moves easily through very tight cover. How do these big dogs manage to push through really tight c

Beer should say never lol

I have a dog and 2 bitches dog was done young and beer shown any really interest when they are in season. Looked after an older dog for a while who had been done when he was older and he was still keen but nothing too serious. I guess you can only try but doubt it will be a big issue atb

I guess most days I could spend longer but I was being honest in my assessment of some busy days. I see the point with kits and have always raised dogs from pups and like it this way as you know what you are getting. My thoughts on getting adults in was that they don't need as much attention and hopefully some of the ground work would be done, this isn't because I am lazy as I have 3 dogs all I which are well cared and well exercised 2 x daily without fail. I do get good holidays so maybe waiting til the summer holidays when I get 6 weeks off would be best. Just would have been nice to get som

I have been considering getting some ferrets to do a bit of work with my dogs for some time. I currently have a spare chicken shed and run free which is an 8x4 ft shed with approx 2/3 section of for the chickens/ ferrets and 1/3 for storage and to keep equioment etc. the shed has a run approx 4 ft x 12ft attached to the shed. It would need ferret proofing but wouldn't take a lot to do. My concerns are realistically I have ltd time like most working people. I have kept ferrets in the past and whilst they aren't a great deal of work they obviously need looking after. I would realistically be abl

Had similar more than once, as stated you can accept an apology but to just ignore and walk away is frustrating. Probably why these dogs are a problem in the first place if there behaviour isn't tackled by these muppets. Had one occasion when the same Alsation attacked one of mine just days after it had nailed him at another local walking spot, the lady in question hadn't been walking the dog the first time. She had the nerve to tell me "he had never done anything like that before", funny I said as "he bite the same dog when your daughter was walking it off the lead not 3 days earlier", suffic

Slippery weasel what is the breeding of your dog and what size tts if you don't mind ( rough coated) looks a nice sort atb

I work mainly my uncles farm large arable and cattle farm flat land few woodland areas and large hedgerows. 1 sporting lucas, 1 bed x grey lurcher, 2 border terriers, 1 dodgy Russell and occasionally 1 schnauzer ( believe it or not he isn't too bad). The lucas is mine the rest others but the work together regularly and do a far job. I choose I lucas because I grew up with rough coated Russell types and the always did a good job alongside lurchers and after research the SLT seemed to suit my needs. On top of this I liked the look if them in truth and I have to live with it , so far do good at.
