  1. Skycat genuine question would a dog in defence mode not generally jack so to speak on a fox at which point the fox usually goes for self preservation and is on his bike. Most creatures surely understand the basic principle of self preservation when it comes to confrontation. It can be different obviously if the dogs movement and thus decision making is ltd ie it can't run away. Not saying this is correct just a thought atb
  2. Sorry craigntodd but if that is your experience with dogs then you haven't for a great deal of experience and your thoughts are way off the mark. Every lurcher or running dog my family has owned has taken allsorts of. Quary and not one was at all dog aggressive ever, quite the opposite very mild mannered generally. Ok a swept ate note to the first post, a few smashed up toes is surely not the end the dog, we have had greyhounds with more than one toe removed and still open winners and good workers atb.
  3. Fair point but a well developed heart or left ventricle for pumping blood is just the start. With training an increase in capillary beds in the muscles will allow greater oxygen into the muscles and stamina will increase. But there is no doubt selective breeding and genetics play a hue role in stamina hence saluki being used for stamina I suppose. The point I was making is given the right training a greyhound for example could develop decent stamina even if breed as a sprinting dog. An example, back when my old man raced greyhounds rightly or wrongly his dogs were also worked and coursed when
  4. I suppose you could argue however that cardiac muscle ( the heart) can be developed like any muscle and a poorly trained saluki won't have the stamina of a well trained greyhound for example. But train them both and obviously the results are different atb.
  5. You can buy online at lawsons animal feed not sure how much nowadays. Or if you have a local racing track chances are someone will sell it there for cheaper atb
  6. I don't know much about salukis but I would have thought they must be comparable to greyhounds in terms of some are natural stayers (admittedly over shorter distances than salukis) and some are more sprinty or am I wrong? Never owned a saluki but had racing greyhounds for years and just saying all greyhounds are sprinters or the same is wide of the mark. On another note stamina in general is about lung capacity to a degree but it's no good having huge lungs if the cv system can't get the oxygen to those working muscles quick enough or the muscle fibres aren't genetically inclined towards stam
  7. As has been said the shredded wax paper is good stuff, will last we'll is hygienic and cheap enough. Haven't got kennels myself but all out dogs in the past were kennelled with this stuff and did well even in the cold nights cheers
  8. My brother owns 2 borders and they are used solely for bushing to the gun and lurchers. They are getting on a bit now but have been decent enough little dogs and good natured things. One is defiantly more useful than the other, neither have shown any real interest in going to ground but in fairness have never been encouraged to either cheers

  10. Nice dogs the Russell is a spitter for my dad's old jr line he had going a few years back. Very good little dogs they were too and good temperament on them. Cheers
  11. We have had a variety of terriers over the years and all have bushed well enough with the runners. Some have gone to ground some haven't and they have all been breed from working parents. I don't doubt a good spaniel would do the job just as well and maybe better , but it comes down to liking the breed I suppose. I enjoy the nature of a good terrier, but spaniels and seen plenty are to manic around the house for me, like a dog that switches off isn't too needy Jmo cheers
  12. Pup now 6 months and really starting to switch on in the field and settle down at home. Been no bother at home to be fair and has a cracking nature to date. Looking to start to get her out more with the brothers terriers and my old mans lurcher over the winter cheers
  13. I believe one of my brothers dogs is off Tyson and she has been a very good little worker with lurches over the years. She is also a lovely natured laid back bitch in the house cheers
  14. Lovely looking hound, he may be whippet on paper but he is much more greyhound like in stature by that photo cheers
  15. Just few pics of the sporting Lucas pup, nearly 5 months now and bold as you like. She is still a pup but entering thick cover already and appears to have a good nose and the makings of a good little busher for the future fingers crossed cheers
  16. Sporting Lucas pup coming on 5 months now, happy with her progress so far. She is beginning to gain in confidence and will happily enter brambles and cover, so hopefully she will do a job when she is older cheers.
  17. Should have said cat accounts for many more as it is out all night when the rats are most active.
  18. There are things that can do done to ltd the supply of food which will be attracting the rats in the first place I.e raising up the chicken food off the floor and not leaving a constant supply of chicken food for them to nab. A good terrier will no doubt take some rats in your garden, but in my experience the neighbours cat accounts for many more an. Can hunt all night when they are not active. Had the same problem with our chickens as poison boxes and rat traps do seen to keep the numbers down. Rentokill and the like will charge a small fortune for just a few poison boxes whih are can be brou
