The other side of the BARF & RMB coin
Rainmaker replied to Nipper's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
:11: Now, here's a FIFTY PAGE, scientifically referenced peer-reviewed rebuttal to that pile of crap pedalled by Second Chance Ranch! http://rawfed.com/myths/rebuttal.html Five pages on the web, yes. Try printing it out! LOL Excellent rebuttal, I need say no more. EDIT: BTW Nipper, enjoying the debate of course, but it WOULD be easier to see and answer your posts if they went in the Working Dog Health & Training section instead of getting buried in Running Dogs & Hounds. Not having a running dog myself any more, I only come across posts like these by chance. C -
Nice one King! Told you, a quick purchase and a word in their shell-like usually always pays off Funny about the security guard, never seen one of them at an abattoir before LOL Must be a major place, perhaps they have AR trouble? Might be worth a phone call or letter to the gaffer (not just any old worker) explaining who you are and what you want. Don't give up on good sources easily! BTW - free sausages? Sod the dogs... Cheers, Lee

Nice one Josh -
Serious about having gone without (i.e. ate beans on toast - 3p beans and 16p loaf of bread from Aldi), or skipped a couple of meals to pay a vets bill? Yes. Kids going hungry? What do you think mate? :11:

Alright King? I'd not be asking for anything specific at first - just tell them you want to buy some scran for the dogs and ask what they can offer you. You'll probably get something like "What like marrow bones and stuff?" in reply. That's your chance to jump in and say "No thanks mate - got any pigs trotters, pig/cow heads, tails, lamb necks, and that sort of stuff?" You'll possibly get a strange look or two, but then depending on the slaughter house (the one near us sells dog mince anyway so they're well used to it all) you'll be given a few boxes of necks/trotters and some heads

LOL Nipper, no need for no posts mate, I'm enjoying the craic mate! Sorry I took you the wrong way, just you seemed quite anti raw feeding (whatever its name) for someone who used to feed it No worries mate, stay and have another pint! Roz, there you are matey! Been looking for you - I couldn't find your PM to reply to you about end user licences. After our discussion over PM about them, I contacted DEFRA and Trading Standards (who enforce animal byproducts legislation in their particular area of the UK). I have had written confirmation from both that you definitely DO NOT n

I dont understand that bit. Not having a go (who would bloody dare with you!!!! lol) Im just curious to what that meens. Josh PMSL  Anyone can challenge any word I say mate, I positively invite it. Just hope you got the proof to back up what you're saying or I'll see your tail between your legs haha Just a vestige from uni, it was drummed into us. Shame it's not like that at vet school eh? Anyway all I meant was being poor as feck you do what you can to get by with what you have available. That dog gets sick, you nurse him with broth when he can't eat, rub his ear

Hi Spike, Generally a "cold" switch is best - just change him over. The odd incidence of diarrhoea is fairly rare, doesn't last long, and doesn't recur. Just be aware that turkey legs (although very cheap!) aren't ideal as they are strong, weight-bearing bones. Wings and backs, necks etc are a better bet. Ribs, brisket/breast, tails and so on are another good bet. Cheers.

Sorry for the late re-entry into this thread, been busy. First, dogs DO need bones for proper health. This has been established a dozen times over on here in the last few weeks. Mackerel, just chuck them in - no prep required (as VD said). RAW chicken is only as likely to hurt or kill your dog as is kibble - i.e. by freak accident. Actually its fair to say it is LESS likely, as a large portion needs chewing into mouthsized pieces, whereas kibble gets 'hoovered' up with associated choking risks. As for contamination risks, it's a case of use your brain as with most things rela

I wouldn't say they were romantic ideas, Nipper, just scientifically based. Domestic dogs differ from Grey Wolves by 0.2% mDNA - mDNA is the 'small' stuff (much smaller than DNA). Any given domestic dog is more closely related to wolves as they are to other breeds and any other animal. No other animal is as close to a wolf as a dog. In fact the only difference (the 0.2%) accounts for size, shape and coat etc. See Wayne, R (1993) Molecular Evolution of the Family Dog, Trends in Genetics, 9:6, pp218-224. Also the tooth cleaning issue is similarly well documented. Let's forget for

You could always leave the cabbage out, but it wouldn't be the same if you ask me LOL

Just had to add (seein as I'm bored rigid), I'm cooking a nice one up tonight. I made myself hungry this morning posting the above! haha * Roll 1lb of lamb neck, mutton or beef shin in flour * Add to a tbsp boiling oil and tbsp butter in the stockpot * Stir in half a cup of chopped onion and brown * Once browned, add a decent splash dark ale (or Fursty Ferret as tonight!) * Simmer on high heat until reduced to thick stock * Add in three chopped onions, a large chopped leek, half a dozen chopped carrots, half a dozen chopped large dark cabbage leaves, and a dozen diced potatoes, with

A woman walks into an accountant in Texas 's office and tells him that she needs to file her taxes. The accountant says, "Before we begin, I'll need to ask you a few questions." He gets her name, address, social security number, etc. and then asks, what is your occupation?" "I'm a hooker," she says. The accountant is somewhat taken back and says, "No, No, No, that won't work. Let's try to rephrase that" The woman says, "OK, I'm a high-end call girl". "No, that still won't work. Try again." They both think for a minute; then the woman says, "I'm an elite chicken fa

Bloomin' hell lad that was some mix!! End of the month, no feckin money left, eat whatever's left hanging round til payday jobbie, was it? Don't worry, we all go there! What's up with a nice bowl of steaming lamb hotpot with extra pepper, and a good lump of crust on the side? Pass the red cabbage will ya Fer the price of that there Countryman's you could have bought a nice selection of veg off the local farmer (if you didn't nick em) and chucked it in the pot with half a rabbit, and had yerself a real tea! Unless you nicked the Countryman's as well? That said, come payday its bac

Good stuff, glad to hear it was a false alarm Sorry, but I think this whole run to the vets culture is bullshit in many cases. I too grew up in a piss poor family that didn't have two pennies to rub together, it never stopped us looking after our animals. Ferrets and lurchers were and usually still are in the realm of the working man (or worse) and fact is in the real world a good part of the time they're used to feed the kids, true live-or-die style. Not pampered in a family with more money than sense, where the guy of the house likes to "play caveman" and still stomp around the co

Hi dodger, Not sure mate, I have mountains to do lately. Between advising/discussing/joining the craic on here for fun I'm currently carrying out a study vis a vis a PhD at a uni, helping with the www.ukrmb.co.uk campaign, running a family with three young kids, working the dogs... The usual Will get something together as soon as I can, and forward it to Ian for inclusion as he sees fit Cheers, Lee

Hi guys, C/G has a new PM addressing his questions/concerns about feeding amounts, worming etc fully. Nipper, the more I see you post the more I think you're either a pet food sales rep or otherwise have vested interests. Why do you persist in this manner? You prefer kibble despite the available evidence. That's FINE! Your choice. But you raise so many bogus objections to raw feeding, tell C/G (who has already stated he's made his OWN decision to feed raw) to get back to James Wellbeloved... Hmm... Why are you so against him (C/G) spending a month or two feeding raw, to see th
-
The problems of feeding raw bones are vastly over-stated. Usually by pet food companies and vets. I've had dogs many a time steal a whole bag full of bones and eat the lot to no ill effect. True, bare naked bones without any muscle can bung a dog up for a bit, but it's all completely fix-able no surgery required in 99% of cases. That's why the advocacy is for raw, MEATY bones. No such impaction problems there. I must admit I find it amusing that you've referred to raw feeding (bones, carcases etc) as "romantic" several times now. What's so 'romantic' about it? Providing an appropria

As an aside, I found this on Greyhound Rescue UK's website (specialising in rehoming/retiring ex-racing GHs) earlier; not while looking for dental info I might add! It (this greyhound trainer's/racer's preferred dry food) might keep them ticking over long enough to run, but the long-term health implications are patently clear
-
My, my, my, my, my. Where to start with this one? LOL Your mate is a confusing one - understanding the implication of commercial dog food in disease development, but not bothering to follow his own advice and feed a healthy (rather than disease inducing) diet! Must admit (and maybe it's just me) I found the whole "it doesn't matter about longevity in running dogs" alarming and frankly a little disgusting. Hey, who cares if they are in constant pain, their teeth are rotting out and they are devloping renal failure, heart problems and other ills. Who gives one so long as they're runni
