  1. I agree 100% Pups free running from 9 weeks old and self entering is old and very sound practice imo. Greyhounds used to be reared like this. Pups got to gallop and learn to use itself before serious work starts. If they miss out on it they'll never reach full potential.
  2. Oh I see yes. Its a thing thats been happening now for years, lads putting everything they do on here or other forums. They used to call them reports and other people on the forums encourage it and give praise. So its all about massaging ego, and before long it becomes more about that than the actual doing of it. What is this thing that we need everyone to know what we are doing 24hrs a day? We are all guilty of it in some measure. You see people on facebook spending more time recording there holiday in Spain than they do enjoying it, in fact the enjoyment has become the recording of it.
  3. I cant remeber seeing them eat flowers, but perhaps he just wanted to shoot it. You didnt say what type of gun, but generally short range is more likely to achieve a cleaner kill because the shot is easier to achieve. Is it the bragging you object to or just the shooting of it, I dont quite get it sorry.
  4. I bought a 50 gallon drum of the old stuff a few years ago through a farmer.
  5. I dont really know, it could be for a Gimp I suppose, I dont hang around roid gyms myself..
  6. Its a similar design to a cartridge belt, but it also has a strip of lead between the layers leather to add weight. Its not for a Saluki btw.
  7. Couldnt agree more, and the dog needs to be in a happy state whilst exercising and not having a burden round there neck.
  8. I had a Patterdale x whippet, it was mustard in cover but its run had to be covered.Nothing could contain it?
  9. Yes I couldnt agree more mate. No need for all this broadcasting everything you shoot. Anybody who doesnt like the sound of Rooks shouldnt live in the countryside. Very good at controlling leather jackets.
  10. When I said "messing about" I meant they are not killing vermin with a zeal like the old keepers did. People do shoot for fun, and who has the right to say they should not. Why did you start shooting? Was it to protect some other animal that you favour or was it for sport?. I mean why do you really want to shoot Pigeons off a standing crop or a Magpie threatening a Thrushes nest? Are you having sport doing that, are you having fun? I would be interested to hear what kind of shooting that it is you do? You say game shooting doesnt make sense or you question the sense in Game shooting for fun! W
  11. Line breeding comes later. You fix traits first.
  12. Thanks for that. the ones we are running now are similar to 5/8 3/8 and plenty quick enough to catch rabbits. Ive never had a Saluki bullx.
  13. I think we are are all a bit sick of constantly obeying all the rules. We are hated by the antis and they will never stop. I agree about constant bragging though, and thats just a human condition. Ive planted about 22,000 Oaks in the last 2 years with a good success rate. Ive shot a few Jays but I think its balanced out. I think shooting people in this country on the hole are sensible and put quite a lot back. Vermin control is nothing like it used to be, the old keepers would kill vermin relentlessly and were good at it. Todays lads are just messing for fun most of the time. I live on a shoot
  14. I use a clear complete wood treatment from ronseal or cuprinol with a woodworm prevention in it, although Ive just noticed its doubled in price.
  15. Only an idiot would call them useless. I really admire them. I love to watch them running a Hare. A good one is pure class. They are the ultimate running machine, theres no doubt about that. I was only making the point its horses for courses (pardon the pun) I wasnt trying to be insulting.
  16. Substitute greater yields for greater performance, stamina, gameness etc. Thats what we are talking about. An improving scale. If you have a great dog in your kennel then you use him at stud to various bitches and he also produces, then you have yourself a prepotent animal. King of dogs! because hes probably DD for the important traits. If you carry on from there outcrossing the offspring all you will be doing is watering down and confusing the original blood of the great dog you had. The purpose of inbreeding is to fix or purify traits. In other words stop the masking of recessives with domin
  17. Pures are inbred today as they always were. The KC was under massive political pressure to alter its regulations, but the inbreeding goes on, as does unauthorised outcrossing.
  18. Yes they were Jerseys, well spotted. Mercury was an outstanding sire. The gene pool was closed by the authorities and matings had to be approved. No foreign cattle were allowed on the Island except for slaughter. Butter production increased with inbreeding and sires very successful. I think the gene pool has now been opened and related blood (highly inbred at the time of export)is now being used having been outcrossed in America and Australia. Some of the Islands farmers however refuse for now to enter the outcross scheme, but eventually they will all outcross I suppose.
  19. How do you think the still births occur because of inbreeding?
  20. Do you think there stock have always been outcrossed?
