  1. Yes he was right, the Minshaw dogs were far to big, but they sailed over the wires. There was couple of lads that came up with them, one eventually moved over to Alsatian cross. I cannot remember names. when the rabbit numbers crashed in Caithness I moved onto other things.
  2. Caithness used to be fenced with single strand wires 9" apart with barbed wire on top. It gradually changed to rylock [square mesh sheep/pig net]and barbed wire.
  3. I only had whippet terrier crosses do that. I had dogs that ran every season for 10 years, never stopped and retired them from running and used as gundog/retriever
  4. Tommy is a nice bloke and always helpful if you needed help.. He killed a lot of rabbits when they were here, but it was fast and furious style of lamping, his dogs didnt jump, just slid between the wires[not possible now] and they didnt get chance to retrieve as he got to them too soon.
  5. For those of you interested, when we caught huge numbers of rabbits, they were never gutted.! They were collected by a van 3 time a week from a company called northern marketing. They were for dog food, pressure cooked, pressure fed through sieves and then extruded into the plastic sausages you see in supermarkets. The stench from the factory was awful and all that was left of the entire rabbit/sheep etc was teeth and hair.!!!
  6. He took huge numbers of hares on lamp single handed, Blue and brown, cannot remember numbers but huge numbers.
  7. but not , perhaps I add something next year
  8. I once took a lad from Doncaster out to show him what was possible in Caithness. September 87 a Monday spent ferreting resulted in 87 rabbit netted 15 caught with dog. Tuesday left house at 8-30pm and drove 60miles, lamped in 20-30mph wind and heavy rain with two dogs, got home at 4.40am and counted rabbits as we unloaded them 208. Wednesday went coursing Blue hairs 30miles from home, Took 3 dogs in afternoon and took 9 hares. Thursday spent 4 hours shooting rabbits with 22 from car as needed a rest, took 132, Friday went lamping at 9-30pm with same two dogs used earl
  9. Because he was hounded out of the county by the procurator fiscal for gross cruelty to dogs.
  10. What a fantastic looker, brings back fond memories.
  11. I hunt frequently in Poland in three different areas, no rabbits the were wiped out virtually everywhere by VHD and same with a lot of hares. I spend a few months every year over there. I hunt Boar, Deer, Mouflon, Pheasant and duck, as well as predators. When there was a lot of rabbits it would have been great for good lurchers, but against the law.
  12. Leopard hunting in any form has to be one of the most exciting forms of hunting, once tried never forgotten.
  13. The moose was stalked NW territories , the elk were in Lithuania.
  14. One or two more African skulls under the Roe and a mix of African and North American mounts. I will try and sort out better photos of some more of the collection.
  15. So, thanks for the tip for posting photos. Some south African skulls and some beasts shot with dogs last winter in the snow, the moose another poster posted on this thread reminded me of the Elk hunt last winter..

  21. So my sugestion is that next time you do catch a couple take one fresh to the ministry vets to test for VHD anti bodies, I have done exactly that with rabbits from, Caithness, Sutherland, Suffolk and all tested positive! The rabbits simply vanish from an area without any outward signs.
