  1. Don't compare to what? I don't get that statement! In my opinion most lurcher to lurcher crosses produce some good, some indifferent and some crap. Then you need to take into it the human factor, eg who trains and conditions them. I have only seen three genuine dogs bred by the man[excluding blue] two of them were very capable dogs, one was indifferent. What i will say is the two capable dogs could work everything legal day and night.
  2. As far as I know most people didnt talk about it because they were breaking the Law. I never saw anything about Vic boasting about deer, as far as I remember he was a Rabbit and hare man.
  3. I saw no where ruined where there were huge numbers, as soon as numbers got low in the area the cash men moved on. I ruined ground as I was being paid for that exact reason. Also ground was ruined in average and low number areas, that included most of England, it was ruined by people who were not interested in the future and would take the last rabbit if possible. By the mid 90s where rabbits were low numbers due to lamping etc and two serious new strains of myxi, along came vhd1 and did 99% of what was left in a lot of areas but not

  5. First is man made second is old raven nest.
  6. I found some dogs gave up quickly and started playing silly beggars, yet other would give in out of tiredness, some would keep going till they dropped, these dogs were often run till they died or were totaly blown out. others would run hard and only stop when you asked them, if trained and brought on correctly these were the massive bag dogs. The best dog I ever had was great on rabbits, even in the small midland fields, yet when I got him on foxes he totally ignored rabbits for years. when I moved and stopped foxing, he took to rabbits again and amassed a fantastic tally in his lif
  7. If you had good dogs anything was possible, but a lot of dogs were NEVER up to the job.
  8. Plummer used to upset a lot of people and he had his life threatened on more than one occasion. He used to promise people the earth and give nothing. He was a liar beyond belief and truly new how to pull the wool over the eyes of the gullible and would lie about anything that came into his head. But he had a gift in his writing.
  9. One was a genuine Vic Minshaw bred dog the other Collie x both very similar.
  10. Anybody know what happened to the kennel maids he had before her.?
  11. So looking at the replies and photos I am still amazed after a lifetime of dogs etc, how many different types of lurchers there are. When I first went to Lambourne show I couldn't believe my eyes and I'm still surprised now, even though I had a few different myself.
  12. If mine came across spanners etc, they hid them.
  13. I have very few photos from years past as never really bothered with camera. I do however have my journals with everything written up to sit a browse one day when I get old lol,
  14. What I have always found strange is that my dogs would catch rabbits and bring them to hand unharmed, same with free flying birds, catch foxes etc. Then the day after be used as a gundog to flush and retrieve. but most gundog men get paranoid about dogs getting hard m outhed by pegging game. they dont seem to grasp the fact hard mouth is either genetic or taught at young age regardless of breed.
  15. Great photos Phil, wished I had more photos especially live catch photos. I also note that a lot of your dogs were heavily influenced by collie same as myself.
  16. As above anyone ever use their lurcher for any other work apart from catch dogs? I used a couple of mine as gun dogs, and good they were two.
