To be fair, it was still good fun and gave us a laugh. Plus it beats any day at work
-
Today, I reckon I'd have hit more with my car on the way home

Yep, as title suggests. I went out with MIA (Dale) today on one of his permissions for some decoying. It was pretty damn quiet really so when some easy opportunities came, the pressure was on. Sadly, I shot like a proper anus and missed 3 or 4 'gimme' birds that on any other day I would have dropped without even thinking. I knew how I'd missed them - not shouldering gun properly, not overtaking enough, stopping the gun etc. Moron! Other days, I can shoot like a shotgunning genius and find it hard to miss! Am I alone in having great days and atrocious days with the shotgun? T

Crackin indeed! Can I come out with you for a hunt? D
-
No worries chap; in theory, with accurate shot placement, a 12fpe air rifle is easily up to the job. Accuracy, experience and realistic ranges would be the order of the day though. D

Hi beginner shooter 1, don't. As a beginner, just don't. Ideally, get a load of practise on ranges you'd like to hunt over and when you can hit 5/5 shots on pound coin sized targets consider yourself good enough to hunt at that particular range (15, 20 , 25, 30, 35 yards etc). Hunt rabbits first. Pigeons and grey squirrels too. If you hit a hare and don't kill it cleanly (between eye and ear, same as rabbits) it will scream like a toddler in a mangle. This is a sound you don't want to hear or cause. Personally i use rimfire, hmr or shotgun on hares as i find it is best.

Finally!!!

Hi gang! Just thought I'd let you know I took the day off today and took my boys (Nick 16 and Jake, 10) out for a tilt at the woodies with the shotguns today. Hide and deeks set up about 11am, 2nd son set up as gundog and Nick with my spare Hilton Century. TBH, despite it being incredibly quiet on the avian front, we had a good time. Chatting, enjoying the sunshine and each others company and enjoying the couple of pigeon that came out to be shot (for lunch, marinaded and fried). Actually Nick has earned the title 'Cap'n Safety'. Down to the only clear and easy shot he had after a 3 hou

new permission last night. then the police come
The Duncan replied to sniper101's topic in Airgun Hunting
Youve obviously never seen me fly a kite moley Seriously though, its not about legal requirement etc, et-bloody-cetera. i only call to let know plod know i'm 'out with a gun' of any description if i think joe public will see me and call it in. If I've called in first, it saves me, personally, time. Time having to talk to plod and time waiting for the place to settle down again after the visit. Honestly though, I don't think i could do a job manning the police phones: "There's a man in the field with a gun" says joe public. "Best place for him surely?" I would be tempted to answer... -
a weekend rabbiting in the Yorkshire Dales.....
The Duncan replied to mick54dog's topic in Airgun Hunting
Given the numbers you got there, I feel almost like giving up lol! Very well done D -
True! Once in my realtree (or near offer) kit, I had wrens sitting on my hat and running up and down my back! I was lying prone atop a haystack in a dutch barn at the time - Magic! Not had a rabbit run into me yet, but I'm sure that will happen sooner or later Duncan

Half plastic half metal pellet's ?
The Duncan replied to DSDL-35's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
I tried the plastic jobbees and was really unimpressed. Only lead going through my airguns barrels now. D -
Crikey! No replies?! Usual story 'if only I was a lot closer!' Good luck, Duncan.

Filling the freezer, happy days!

Its not always about the numbers, but the enjoyment. A tidy bag really and a good couple of meals there too so a successful trip - well done! I had a little trip out myself today with new member MIA. Business wasn't brisk but we managed a mixed bag of 15 - woodies and collared doves. Some good shooting and not too many misses Keep at it and enjoy, D

Solid Next time I'm in Wales, I'll buy you a beer chap . All the best, Duncan
-
Must have been a small dinner though moley; are you on a diet? For a fast lunch it takes 2 birds breasts marinaded and fried quickly (still pink in the middle) to keep me full. Shame that pheasant spoiled thing for you! Nice to bag one with the air rifle though - well done Cheers D

Agree in every respect. I had the multi-shot version for a while and never got on with the magazine system (unreliable, including the upgraded version I bought). hated the mmc bit too. Makes the HW100 system look like a work of pure, unadulterated genius. D

Good advice everywhere. Some selling points to drop in too: eyes and ears on the landowners side around when he/she isn't on the land, quick response if he/she needs it, safe and mature attitude to the job, discretion when faced with members of the public, able to lend a hand with other things if needed. I have dropped these things into conversations in the past and they certainly seemed to help. Once you have a permission, getting your next one is easier if you can name-drop about someone you already shoot for. All the best Duncan.
-
In all fairness, my response was down objecting to a bit of name calling. I certainly have a lot more respect for you now we are communicating better. All the best mate! Duncan. PS This morning, one of my landowners has asked me to hit his foxes hard. They'd been a problem to him during lambing time but he had failed to mention it. He's seen a lot more around lately and wants me to deal with them. Personally, its not my cup of tea, but I can't shoot only to shoot the prey that suits me. I have to earn my permission I guess.

I feel I ought to apologise masmiffy. My dig at malt was only really because I found his attitude aggressive and if someone seems already halfway wound up, I sometimes succumb to temptation and completethe job. As it happens, I am welsh on my fathers side and love Wales to bits. Likewise, I wouldn't decry anyones country sports or pestcontrol activities, as i think we are all under enough fire a it is. Back to the topic before digressing; I feel that shooting foxes really does come under pest control, rather than sport (an enjoyable activity nonetheless) and therefore, where necessary,

It's all part of the fun :-)

Me too ;-)

typical taff - full of themselves! Name: a welsh inventor, conqueror, imperial leader, cricketer etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc ... and I guess your welsh foxes are the size of pit ponies but with more attitude! per-lease!!!! Get over your national inferiority complex and crack on Duncan AbRichard
