    I was at the lakes the other eve waiting for wildfowl and not much happening but plenty of woodies coming by as it was pretty early. I was bored and used some steel shot 4's on them, 32g and the pigeons were well and truly pole-axed! Normally (and definitely for geese) I use at least 36g of 3's.

    SP 5 goes for about 2.5k new - a lot extra cash for the bling element, as its no better than mechanically than an SP1. Personally, I was drawn to the SP 5 until I remembered I only use it for pigeon shooting and wildfowling and then went off the colour case hardening too. you won't go wrong with a 687 if its been looked after to any extent.     A lovely write up too! Love taking woodies with the air rifle (also usually as a bi-product of hunting for something else), almost as much as with the shotgun. Keep at it and well done Duncan.

    Depends on condition. Up to a grand (ish) for an absolute minter, barely used. Less if condition is not perfect, on a sliding scale - this being through a retailer. Less if in a private sale of course.

    Thanks for all considered input into the debate and opinions put forward. I agree Jonno, on the point that if you buy Weihrauch etc, you tend to keep the rifle permanently or at least long term. My HW60J in.17 flavour is continuing my ueber quality experience I have had for the last 20ish years with Weihrauch rifles. On reflection and considering all inputs, I reckon I'll go for an older CZ (had one before) as it will be mainly used around farm yards and barns and for lamping. For long range work, the HW hmr will be used, but up to 60 ish yards the .22lr will be the workmanlike tool. I'll
