  1. i'm looking for a polecat hob (polecat-coloured, not an actual wild polecat, obviously!), i don't mind if it's a big nasty b*****d you want to get rid of cos it bites, i'll sort it out. in fact, i'd prefer a big nasty b*****d one! i want to breed from my two jills this year, and i can't find a polecat hob anywhere. seem to be a bit of a rarity round these parts unfortunately. i'm located south norfolk, so anywhere in norfolk or north suffolk, i don't mind a bit of travelling to pick one up. any help much appreciated. Oz.
  2. attach a brick on a bit of string or baler twine or summat under the raft? on enough string to cope with a rise in water levels. should anchor it down alright. then get a pole with a hook on the end to position the raft, and to drag it back to dry land when necessary? just a thought. probably a completely crap idea, mind. or maybe you need a pair of waders! Oz.
  3. sorry rew, but thought i'd hop in & reply to this one. jills NEED to be mated to bring them out of season. the only other alternative is hormone shots from the vet, which don't always work. if you don't want kits, try to find someone with a vasectomised hob. doesn't matter if the hob is fertile or not, as long as the jills get mated. if they are not brought out of season by the methods above, it's not very pleasant! their vulvas stay enlarged, making it very easy for infections to get into the womb, which leads to blood poisoning, and eventually death. option 4, if you never intend
  4. 6 at the mo, 2 albino hobs (castrated), 1 sandy hob (castrated) 1 very old silver jill (spayed), all kept as pets (i know, pets is a bit of a dirty word round here!) i also have 2 jills, one sandy/pale polecat, one sandy/pale polecat mitt (white feet & bib) that i got as strays last year. i intend to breed from them this year, and work the offspring next. just not sure what colour hob to use... i know one of the girls will throw silvers, but she gave birth shortly after she was found, and all the kits were sold by the time i got her, so i've no idea what she was mated to to produce silv
  5. sounds like you had a good time with her! 10 to 15 runs might have been a bit much for her, but it's not like you're going to do that every day. as far as turning, she's still young, it takes practice for a dog to figure it out. can't wait to get onto more sociable hours so i can spend a bit more time out with my lad!

    TOWN / COUNTRY

grew up in a village, lived in norwich for a year when i was 18, i now live 400 yards down a track, in a tiny hamlet, a mile from town. it's not strictly the arse end of nowhere, but it feels like it! nearest decent pub is almost 6 miles away, and most of my friends are in norwich, so i spend a fair bit of time there. it means a lot of driving, but i couldn't live how i want to live in the city. doubt i'll ever go back, unless i'm suddenly minted & can afford one of the huge posh houses with 1 acre gardens there....
  7. it's not too bad round my way at the moment, middle of summer is roadkill season here. there's always a few flattened pheasants when the keepers let them out of the pens for the shoots, rabbits are always squished to paste, and i see a fair few squished squirrels in the woods. but come summer, the roads are red with dead things!
  8. another easterner! excellent :welcomeani:
  9. i'm glad i watched that with the sound off! seen it before, near shit meself the first time!

    BEDDING

straw. i tried shredded paper, but it turned to mush in the runs. my dad uses sawdust in the hutch & run, with a layer of straw on top in the hutch for his ferrets. i left him looking after 2 of mine when i went away for a few days, he decided to clean them out, and bedded them on sawdust. i came home to two very scabby, balding ferrets, seems like they're allergic to sawdust!

round my way there's loads of woods, and they're absolutely heaving with them. i walked my dog down my road one day last summer, and found 6 dead ones in various states of decay (all past eating stage unforunately!) in less than a quarter mile. i drive through 3 woods on my way home from the pub, i usually see at least 6 or 7. by the roadside, they seem to hang around in pairs, although i have seen 5 on a verge before. i regularly see pairs of them on my track too. Gyp chased an absolutely massive buck on one of our back fields a while ago. dog is about 25", and this munty was easily 3 or 4 in
  16. shoulda had your tape-measure with you! King Rat comp & all
  17. she's a fine looking bitch. i have a saluki x greyhound, he looks like a sturdier version of a bedouin-bred saluki, with shorter legs! he also came from travellers, they do seem to like their saluki crosses.
  18. due to my shitty shift (3-midnight, monday to friday ), i don't get much time to do stuff. weekends are a blur of trying to get round to see as many friends as i can . my main weeknight concerns (once i get home from work) are getting the fire going, doing a bit of tidying up, and getting online. most of my time is taken up with the animals. when i do have time, i play guitar & bass, i sing, listen to music, go out to see bands, get rollocking drunk & throw myself into hedges (ah, the noble art of "bush-jumping"!) . i'm a big fan of charity-shopping too, i rarely buy "new" cl
  19. i've always been told that you can't consider a running dog full grown til it's 2. they're supposed to calm down around that time. only another 6 months to go with my boy... can't wait!
  20. it's been a fair while since i've ferreted, but i intend to breed from a couple of jills i have, and use the kits next year. i wouldn't use the jills, as i've become quite attached to the little buggers, but it'd be nice to have some i've bred myself specifically for the purpose of working. i will more than likely work them collarless, as i have little money to buy a locator with, a lot of patience, and i can't help worrying about the risk of the ferret getting snagged (the same reason i won't put a collar on my cat). my dad collars his ferrets, has never lost a ferret. he's never lost a coll

    shit stirring

the chat is about the only thing that gets my head back together when i get in from work! it's really nice to talk to members of the forum bout non-hunting stuff, and a good way to get a quick answer to a pressing question. if someone is giving me grief, i just ignore them. or give as good as i get!
  23. thankyou. Spencer was never really a worker, he had thyroid problems, then developed diabetes in later life. but he was my dog, mine from the day he was born ten and a half years ago (runt in a litter of one!), and he was absolutely devoted to me, as i was to him... a dog like that is priceless, worker or not. he was never put on a lead, he didn't need to be. he'd stick by my side whilst we walked, never looking where he was walking, just at me. as soon as i stood still, he was there in front of me, looking up & waiting for a fuss. he never stopped wagging his tail. i doubt i'll ever find
  24. i knew today wasn't going to be a good one, when i overslept by an hour. took mutt for a run, and he pissed off across the field to the cottage next door, and decided to chase their ducks around, just as the bird who lives there pulled up into the yard. then she tells me off for giving him a whack for being in her garden & chasing her ducks! so off we go home, me now on track to be ten minutes late for work. hopped in the car, get halfway up the road... and realised i'd left me lunch behind... got to work, made my excuses, got sent to work with the printers, baking hot, but ok so far. t
