  1. no it will not otc, peat is the best covering for fenn traps , trust me , i have tried everything over the years and peat is the best , i used to cover traps with sieved soil for years , but you always seemed to get sum run under the plate and when rabbits hit the treadle plate , they wouldn,t set the trap off and you were left with a clean plate and no catch, with peat being so light it bridges the gap between plate and frame leaving a hollow under the plate and nothing to impead the firing Then I must have been doing it wrong all this time then . . . . I think we'll have to agree to d

  3. Read my tunnel trapping thread pinned to the top of this board - same goes for box see-saw trapping as to best sites, you'll get it nicked or run over if you leave it in a gateway OTC
  4. I use them when the situation warrants it - near stock or deer etc but prefer conventional eyes for the most part OTC
  5. Steve, It is just the way they were made and tensioned. When set it becomes more cylindrical. It has no other specific use and would just have been the way they were. OTC

  8. It was manufactured by STANDFIELD, A.W. PTY. LTD. between 1950-1970 and there are a number of minor variations of the trap. It was made in rat and mouse size. The conical spring is typical of that type of trap. OTC
  9. Me too - it was humbling talking to the old boys as it always is - they like to see a Serviceman in uniform so I helped make their day. I lost count of the times I had to explain my medals to the interested youngsters too. A great morning - the weather held off until this afternoon which made it even better. OTC
  10. It might not be 'hunting' related but it is relevant to us all www.helpforheroes.org.uk OTC
  11. Just put a lick of polish on my boots and shined the medals up for my annual march through the town myself actually. I owe it to fallen friends and to the memory of those I will never know but will always be indebted to. OTC
  12. If you're 'not quite sure what you're doing' then please don't set them just yet - that would be irresponsible. There are some good snaring topics pinned to the top of this forum by G Waters - read those thoroughly before you contemplate setting anything OTC
  13. Strawberry milkshake for me - it tastes just the same on its way back up :alcoholic:  Not that I drink to excess any more anyway . . . OTC

  15. I have quite a few field sports titles on my bookshelves but personal favourites include ~ Pool of the Black Witch and Brendon Chase by BB Of Pedigree Unknown by Phil Drabble Rural Reflections by Stuart Haddon Riddoch (the trap collectors bible ~ for now at least ) Rats and How to Destroy Them by Mark Hovell Merle was about the best of DBP's books I suppose, but Darcy's Running Dog Addiction and Lloyd's Moucher's Tale beat them all for lurcher work tomes OTC
  16. Ordered my copy today so I will look forward to reading it OTC
  17. A few years ago I was standing in a Tesco's checkout queue when the little girl in the trolley in the next checkout said to her pretty young mum 'Mum, can I have some sweets?'. 'No' said the mother. 'Oh please' said the little one. 'No - you had sweets yesterday' said the mum looking a bit agitated. So the little angel in her loudest voice said 'Well .. . if you don't buy me any sweets I will tell everyone in here that I saw you with Daddy's willie in your mouth . . .' You can just imagine the aftermath . . . absolutely hilarious! OTC
  18. I would go for a walk with my notebook and camera around the backstreets of Wednesfield, Staffs in about 1920 - so I could ask the old rabbit trap makers the questions I am finding it so damned difficult to answer in my book! OTC

Young kids don't seem to understand this concept - you don't get an extra hour's sleep - you just get up an hour earlier! OTC
  21. I found a kids teddy bear in one years ago - a bit of a joke no doubt OTC
  22. As I thought - there are no damsons on my garden tree either. Perhaps the pollination idea was right - it would explain the absence across the country wouldn't it? OTC
  23. This is my doctor's print out - I have covered my personal details OTC
