Ratching Today In The Snow Made Me Think
trenchfoot replied to trenchfoot's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
of the two running I prefer the thinker. I have not had the bullx for long, and on a straight slip on the lamp he does a good job. The little collie cur always impresses me. Take her anywhere without question and may not catch such a full/mixed bag but I come home satisfied. The team I have right now are coming together nicely though! -
Out earlier with the dogs, making the most of the clear weather before the blizzard. The collie and the cur were out fetching in some ground towards me and the 2 lurchers. Something got up from a piece of cover around 50 yards in front of the free working dogs. The lurchers spotted it and then the difference between the 2 of them became apparent. The little bull x ran straight at it, down the valley to smash its way through the hedge to get on it ASAP. The thinker, (colliexgrey x salxwhip.grey with a smallest dash of bull) ran backwards, quartering away. this lead him to a gateway from which h

Definition Of Shotgun Types
trenchfoot replied to cyclonebri1's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
game guns tend to be at the lighter and livelier end of the spectrum. They tend to be set up to shoot quite flat too. The stock on a game gun has a more open grip. This serves 2 purposes, firstly it tends not to cock the wrist when waiting on the peg with the muzzles held aloft, and secondly, because the game/target can come from any place/angle it enables the shooter to react quicker. They also have a narrower ribs to aid quick target acquisition. Sporters tended to be heavier versions of game guns, wider ribs and a more pronounced pistol grip. As the target is coming from a pre known pl -

Does not say much about your dogs if they need a big field to catch a near dead squirrel!

Fecking iPhone !

Right on the price of grouse. Plus VAT. Pheasants run from £ ish a day small local to the highest I've seen of £35000. That was a team of 8 with a bag of 400. High pheasant shooting on premium estates runs at around £40 plus vat max per bird

Depends on the type of ground and type of hunting

Does the baccy pouch come with 'em?!

collie/grey x beddie/whippet. pick the "middle raciest" looking out of the litter.

Just done some for some one else. 1500mm x 750 x750. 55w tube heater in the back with safety guards. needs to add "c"channel steel around exposed edges. tube heaters are a lot cheeper to run than heat lamps

Wouldn't use a rough collie for all the tea in china. I agree with Chid, that it would need to be working livestock, but not a trial bred collie. There are one or two folk who still work pure collies as ferretting and mouching dogs, if you could find a good one of these that had come from proven working farm stock, then that would be my first choice

I dont think you would know if you had a lined bred dog, most of the best hare dogs lines have been going years and I have yet to see a deformed litter and I have bred lurcher for many more years than i have terriers, you will only get problems if you go the wrong way, like mother to Son if you go that way yes you will get deformed pups. There have been plenty of "outcrosses" in coursing dogs. But if you are line breeding, then breed close but be prepared to cull hard. If you are breeding for appearance you will only cull the "ugly" ones. Hence your line will have a limited number of critt

Liked is an understatement. Lost my shadow that day. Buried her in the back field. I often see roe grazing over her grave and half expect her to burst out and rattle one, just for old times sake I have never tried to replace like with like. They never measure up. Always try something a bit different from the last to one degree or another. It's cheaper than changing the misses. But possibly more trouble

She's gone back from whence she came. Broke her back at 10 years old. Doing what she did best. Never bred from her as she never came into season. Would have love to have done, her only fault was her temper

too true Andy, with her and my old girl I used to wander about like a Bill Oddie type. Bino's bird book and flask. Never got asked any questions and nearly lways came home with a full haversack

Cheers Fella. Not had a heavily based bull x before. thought I'd see what all the fuss was about

Also have a colliex cur and Lurcher x lurcher Just added a little bull x, handy thing when ratching about Have no need for a coursing dog when your on permission, flushing to the gun

Or what its breed type was created for!

Why do you think they call me trenchfoot!? You spend all day. Everyday in Wellies or boots, you'd have rotten feet. Certain times of the year boots stay on for days. I think I'm qualified to comment

comfy, warmish, but the sole wear out too soon if you do a lot of walking on hard surfaces.

lurchers " English shepherd dog " anyone tried them?
trenchfoot replied to kevin-Day's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Don't look like any nice old collie I ever knew. Looks a lot like a breed bred for form not function. That my friend has been the downfall of many a working breed. Pretty dogs for pretty boys. Give me a rough old bitch any day. -

No one with an ounce of sense would use an Aussie Cattle Dog to create a lurcher. Now you are taking the p###!
