  1. Thanks Steve. Cheers too Andy, you are quite right mate. That's what I was groping towards when I mentioned "Fit in the breech" and "Factor-in Headsizes". I try to cover all the basics and reasonings logically, without causing folks to lose the will to live! There is never an absolute, conclusive answer untill a pellet type/brand has been properly shot-tested and given a fair and proper hearing in an all-range shooting session. RWS Superdomes are an air rifle evergreen. Some lads will find they shoot superbly in their gunbarrels, like my HW77 does, or fine to a certain range as Mikey doe
  2. Hi beddyx. Right mate. First thing..stop looking at the price tags; look at what you are shooting with. It is highly unlikely the Superdomes will perform as well or better in the barrel of an Air Arms rifle as Air Arms Diablo Fields will. You haven't mentioned calibre but, the AA Field in .22 is 16 grains weight and was designed for Air Arms Lothar Walther rifle barrels. The .22 Superdome is 14.3 grains and, being 1.7 to 2 grains lighter, it will be liable to stability issues due to fit in the breech. In otherwords, it will possibly skew in flight and "shotgun" all over your target. In .17
  3. Top shot on the Jay, Lee mate but, brrrr! TOO cold for what little quarry I'm seeing out there in this weather. Had a few sorties out but, all I've seen is one rabbit and come home with frozen feet and mitts! ATB Simon
  4. In my summer field pack there is... A Torch. Cammo leaf and scrim nets for quick-build hides. Small hacksaw. Gun toolkit, incase stock screws/Allen screws loosen-up. A good sharp machette. Plenty of water. That's the lot. The rest stays in the car. Simon
  5. She certainly does r-o-b-p, God bless her. I have a very understanding partner but she has never yet bought me anything for my shooting! Can't complain though, I come home with scopes and a new 426 quid Weihrauch HW77 rifle just before Christmas and she never gives me grief over what I spend. We are very lucky lads by comparison to what some others have to contend with. ATB Simon
  6. Hi Rich. I had a look at the Gunmart link that Si's posted up and I must say I'm very impressed with the look of the MTC Mamba. I absolutely love the German 4A reticle and that's one I'm going for next. I have just bought a HAWKE 6-18x44 AO scope with an SR12 reticle (Ser. HK3226) and it's a beautifully made optic for not a lot of cash. I think I paid less than Ninety quid for it, brand new and got it for my new Weihrauch HW77 .22 spring rifle as I like to have an all-range reach. This is a long-bodied scope but, it promises to fulfil my prefered methods of hunting from a static ambush h
  7. Hi Treganin.

Many thanks for your kind compliments about my thread on gun/scope fit. Hope you find it helpful.

All the best for your shooting.

  8. Hi Rich. If you are shooting a Weihrauch HW100 The Hawke Eclipse 4-12X40 with mildot reticle is a cracking little scope to open considerations with and well within your budget. It's a fixed focus scope which requires you to use the zoom ring for focusing down to short-range targets. But it's got a very clear, pin-sharp sight picture; a lot better than some other higher-priced, high-end scopes have I've tried. I got mine for 20 quid brand new in a closing down sale but they are not expensive elsewhere It doesn't have an illuminated reticle but it's not bad in low light condition. The oth
  9. Hi Jim. Don't expect great things for your money. You don't say which Baikal rifle model/type this is. There are several air rifles made by this Russian gunsmithing company and they are generally cheaply made fare. Not very nicely finished and some have stockfit issues. Give it a good testing if you can first, but don't expect it to perform like an Air Arms or Weihrauch. ATB Simon
  10. Hi Steve. Sounds like a steal at that price. When I think how good mine are, I wouldn't sell them for such a low price. Sure it will be a great buy mate. Simon
  11. Quite right Steve. Who says you got to "Graduate" to a top rifle? Get yourself the HW100, out of the two you have here. The BSA R10 seems to be very popular here too. Top kit works the best of all...use it! All the best with your final choice mate. Simon
  12. Two letters. K.O. Hope to hell you panelled the cheeky twat a good un Davy mate . You'll be right for the springtime and the meet mate :weight_lift2: ATB Simon
  13. Cheers Steve mate. Aye it's a beauty of a TX200HC .177 in a dedicated Left-Hand action with a walnut stock and shoots a dream on AA Diablo Field 4.51mm pellets and nothing else. It was tuned about 10 years ago by Karl Slater at Guns International (retired and sold-up now alas!), and he really knew how to hone and tune a spring rifle if you have the FAC. I don't have a digi vid camera or a mobile phone even; I would like to show some film of what I can do to group pellet on pellet at a 45 metre paper zeroing target. Correct hold-technique is very important with a high performance spring rifle.
  14. hi simon do you fancy being a shooting steward at the meet regards davy Hi Davy. Sure mate, I'd be delighted to help out if I can Simon
  15. All you need to worry about r-o-b-p is keeping the outside clean and handprint-free by giving the gun's metalwork a wipe over with a cleaning rag with a few drops of gun oil on it. NEVER put anything down your barrel until you know exactly what you are doing. It's highly unlikely you will need to clean the barrel. A fag filter? Good God No!! That will not provide sufficient buffer-resistance to the charge of air blasting into the barrel-breech and it it will be just as if you have dry-fired the action. As Andy's stated, that's just a good way to wreck the internals. Keep on with your Haw
  16. Well, Andy mate, know with a clear conscience that you've done the right thing reasonably. And even the police have been involved, investigated and doubtless, explained to Mr and Mrs Chimp that you are perfectly within your legal rights and bounds. There's nothing more you can do to further reason with these cretins so ignore them. They don't sound like the sort of people you'd like to invite round for drinks and dinner anyway! All the best mate. Simon
  17. Aaron. With regard to shooting rabbits -or anything, at extreme range, yes, I respect your view that this may be seen as an act without humane regard for the animal but, please understand, a .177 pellet with near 17ft/lbs of oomph behind it, is approaching almost supersonic velocity. When it hits from an optimum plunging angle it inflicts phenominal penetrative damage and the animal is killed absolutely instantly. I would never take such a shot unless both gun, scope, pellet and I were equal to the task and certainly not with a sub 12ft/lb air rifle, regardless of how accurate it is. I have o
  18. I don't doubt you J Darcy, and the Woody is now officially recognised by the RSPB as the most numerous, commonly-seen bird in Britain but, I'm shooting over the very same fields today as I did with my father and the numbers are not as great as they were. Or did I see things differently? Oh well, not that it matters really. ATB Simon
  19. A Relum Tornado Now there's an underlever, tap loading air rifle I will never forget. You could get one of these, among others, from your mum's mail order catologues back in the 60s and 70s for a few shillings per week. My 23 year old cousin did just that, Ordered himself a .22 and within days of having it, he and I were plinking in my Aunty's spacious garden, I was 12 years old. We have a break for a drink of pop, when he then turned to me and pointed the gun straight at my head and fired the action... Well, he'd forgotten he'd loaded it I remember this almighty thwack on my left ch
  20. Have to tip my hat to you J Darcy that's a darn good bag by any standards, and a vary wary bird too, as Si points out. How about a thread letting us in on your secrets for a good maggie hunt? ATB Simon
  21. Thanks Richard, I'm starting to get the hang of this...I think
  22. Hi degster. Couldn't you set up a 25 metre range at home on your garden? Or is it only 30 metres square? Pontefract Air Rifle Club is about 25 miles from you and reasonably reachable if you have a car. I'm joining up there this year. Andy, the trouble with people nowadays is that they have been bred on Health and Safety and the immortal phrase "I don't think..." ("I don't think this is a good idea" I don't think this is wise.blah blah) and had their balls removed, so they need to make love to their partners wearing orange high vis jackets and hard hats and play computer games to get th
  23. My God. That's a Fox and something else. If the "Nice but dim" people are feeding these in urban areas and this is what they are growing to as a result, no wonder we have already heard of a child being attacked by one, let alone some poor old cat. Shoot the bloody things!
  24. Welcome to the best air rifle forum on the net DrFox! :welcomeani: Simon
  25. Hi Jerry. I must be one of the old fart brigade having shot for over 40 years with a spring air rifle of some sort, man and boy. I joined this group only a few months ago but, I've learned more than I have been able to contribute, from some of the best lads I've ever got to know in shooting, without actually meeting up yet! The younger fellows are keen, knowledgeable and properly focused on doing things right and showing a good and fine example of care in their fieldcraft and sportsmanship and willingness to help out whenever help is wanted. The older veterans here are free and generous
