  1. Hi Lordgamebore. Just to say do not attempt to use a set of sticks or a purpose-made bipod as a solid rest for shooting a spring rifle. The felt-recoil runs in two directions at once and, as much of it is vibration from the spring and piston punching forwards, the rifle will jump sharply about and upwards from a solid rest and you will never achieve accuracy, no matter how much you try to get a working zero. From what you are saying in your post, you are lacking a bit of confidence to take a precision shot on the head and brain area. Heart and lung shots are only effective if you know EXAC
  2. First of all congratulations on buying a magnificent rifle Robert. What have you; .177 or .22? As for the Hawke Panorama EV 3-9x40. I don't have that particular model but other Hawke models I do have seem to combine well with the TX200. Should be fine Robert mate ATB Simon
  3. Hi Davy. Thanks so much for your post and comments here mate. You know how first impressions last the longest? I have several mates who shoot their pcps over the same land and every time I see them out, seems there's one of them going home early with a rifle that's failed in some way. Of course it's possibly down to less than proper care and maintainance but, the fields are very dry and the soils are very dusty and it seems to give the pcp guns a bit of a hard time. There are seemingly no end of these guns in for repairs at my gunsmiths but, that is likely down to the fact that there are more
  4. A bit late as I was busy cooking the dinner and giving my kids mum a day off! A very Merry Christmas and I hope it was all it should be for every one of you here. Merry Christmas lads. Gentlemen all. Simon, Joanne, Pippa, Josh and Dale
  5. Thanks very much indeed Phil. As you will appreciate, spring rifles differ slightly in their handling characteristics from one makers type and design to the next so, the techniques I use to shoot my HW77 and HW80 are a little different in their observations to my TX200 for example. But being able to note a rifles handling and adapt a proven basic technique is what I use to get the maximum accuracy out of the rifle and myself. What I wrote was the very least you should know first -hand for correct handling. Keeping your contact with the rifle light and unrestrictive but not so much that it
  6. Hi Mosby mate. Give the cocking link a tap as this usually loosens and rattles when the pivot has begun to fail. All the best. Simon
  7. Great review Chris I always enjoy hearing a positive experience from a fellow spring rifle enthusiast. Gamo have come in for a bit of critical stick in recent years but, they continue to make a series of spring rifles for not a lot of cash and that gets a lot of people into the sport and that's only a good thing all round. I'm glad to read that the Whisper X you have has responded well to a tune up. I'd like to hear more of your shooting experiences with this rifle. Thanks for such an informative and well-written write up Chris. I really enjoyed reading it. Simon
  8. Thanks Chris and Mikey. I wrote it with the younger novices and general beginner in mind. I'm not at war against the darkside PCP but, I think a lot of shooters miss out on a very rewarding shooting experience that spring rifles deliver. And I wonder if the Spring Rifle has lost out in further improving developement to the R&D that has been lavished on PCP rifle technology??? Thanks again for taking the time to read it fellas Simon
  9. I've just got my Weihrauch HW77 and a bunch of new Hawke scopes and my christmas came early! But, I got a pair of Headphones I need and some nice smellies I like and a bottle of Port I'm particulaly partial to. Christmas dinner at my brother's today so there will be more! Merry Christmas to you all, lads. Simon
  10. Ladies and Gentlemen. This is a case for the oldest, noblest and, in my humble opinion, the finest sporting air rifle type of all. The spring-piston powered air rifle. Yes, PCPs are accurate; some are indeed astonishingly accurate and..well, that's all they are really. They can surely hit what they are pointed at but, they do it with an air of self-possession. It's as if they have been designed to keep as much involvement from the you the shooter, and your natural imperfections and errors in handling and aiming, out of the shooting solution, as far as possible. With a pcp and a scope in z
  11. Bloody hell Shay that's a hard call on you aand your lad at this time of year mate. Personally, I'd go round to your mate's who's known this little b*****d at his work for years and find out what's happened and maybe, where he's fled to. Not likely he has chucked his job in, unless hes been sacked. Don't sell your shottie mate, that's two guns down in the story. One's bad enough. I don't use on-line banking, but if you PM me your address I'll send you a fiver into the pot for the lad's gunfund. ATB Simon Edited for banned bad language and outrage at the way of modern day
  12. Can't fault Shay's suggested rifles Sexy (!) I own a TX200 .22 rifle and TX200HC carbine in .177 and both are superbly smooth and accurate. I would add the Weihrauch HW80 and HW77 to the list for your consideration. So good they are addictive! ATB Simon
  13. Hw95 is a great rifle mate. Great choice!
  14. Totally agree Ben. I absolutely love my HW77 .22 to bits. And I have both a TX200 .22 rifle and TX200HC .177. Simon
  15. Don't bother with Gamo mate. Bottom of the pile tat. Triggers are terrible and stiff, quality of build and finish is naff. And they have those Godaweful cheap tatty Tru-Glo sights that aren't worth tuppence. They are really only good for plinking tin cans in your back garden. A lot of people buy them not knowing what they've actually bought... until they try to shoot with precision accuracy at a rabbit's head kill-zone at long range. There are sound reasons other than mere money, why there are quality air rifles with sweetly adjustable triggers that cost a lot more. Don't wast a hundred quid o
  16. That's just it Hyperion mate. FAC air power is NOT a magic pellet that gives the shooter the gift of accuracy with precision at 70 yards or further. My FAC HW80 .22 is searingly accurate at 19.6 ft/lbs and I have hit rabbits with clean headshots out to near 100 metres but, this is very rare and even then, in perfectly still air with as near as dammit no breeze. I use it like a normal air rifle and zero at 30 metres and shoot Rabbits to 45 metres or nearer. Seldom further. The true advantage of using the extra thwack is to be more effective at normal airgun ranges for putting the target animal
  17. Hi Karpman. Oh they are VERY addictive mate but I try to keep myself restrained as far as possible. I now have only six magnificent spring rifles ..it's nothing compared to what certain others have . Simon
  18. Hi Alex. As I mentioned earlier, I've just bought a brand new Weihrauch HW77 full lengh rifle .22 calibre to my collection. It cost me £426 as I'm a lefthanded shooter and there's a £40 premium for left handed/ambidexterous stocks. But what an absolutely stunningly accurate masterpiece of an air rifle this is. I can't speak for you Alex but, I would seriously urge you take a closer look at this rifle. My one regret is that I didn't buy one of these in both .177 and .22 years ago! ATB Simon
  19. Hi ct. The very best spring air rifles are made by Weihrauch and Diana from Germany and Air Arms from the UK. With £250 you can go hunt for a real secondhand bargain from one of these makers. The very best rifles for hunting to go for are; WEIHRAUCH HW95K, HW95KT. HW80, HW80K, HW77, HW77K. (The K denotes a shorter carbine version). DIANA. They tend to be rare on the secondhand market but, the Mod. 46 underlever is a beauty. So is the sidelever Mod. 52. The 54 AIRKING is a recoiless rifle and is superb. OR AIR ARMS PROSPORT, TX200, TX200HC. You might even get a top scope and a gunba
  20. He did Andy, but, I reckon they must have figured I'd turn back! My mobile phone has packed up so I couldn't ring to say I was batting on. The roads were very slushy but driveable. Yet there were people abandoning their vehicles and legging it! That's what really caused the delays. It makes no bloody sense! No Yorkshire grit these Southerners! Bit of snow falls and they get a fit of the vapours! Any idea how much would a .20 barrel cost for an HW80, aside from possibly having to wait till God knows when for one?? Wurz, a knock down, reset-able target or two's a good idea. Must get a
  21. That's pretty much what I very nearly posted but I've not had enough to drink yet!!!
  22. Hi Wurz. Yeah mate, but, it hacked me off more that our country seems to fall apart in a flop, as soon as the snow starts. You just watch, there'll be a warm Summer and it'll be all panic as the roads start cracking up and we start running out of water! Changing the barrel on your HW95? That seems like a good idea mate. You can always swap it back if it doesn't work out. Now you've got me wondering about returning my HW80K to 12ft/lbs and swapping the barrel to .20.... I've been out shooting paper targets to get familliar with the HW77 and adjust the Rekord trigger exactly right. A
  23. Hi Karpman. I shoot FAC air power and to be honest, the Law makes having it more hassle than it's actually worth. I shoot .22 rimfire and centrefire military bolt-action rifles so, I have to keep my licence up. As for putting another air rifle on my allowed slot, nah! If anything, I would say to you; only go FAC if this is truly what you actually need. A higher powered air rifle where a shotgun or rimfire is impractical. A superbly accurate rifle is what you really, honestly need and the legal 12ft/lb output limit, is plenty powerful enough for despatching Rabbits and rats etc. at sen
  24. Hi Andy. Of course it's the the best Gas Ram mate, Weihrauch made it! I had a really duff day on Saturday last. I set off to take the HW77 to Tony Wall for tuning at Sandwell Field Sports down in West Bromwich and, after driving 110 miles in sunshine, I hit the snow storms and got stuck in jammed traffic on the M42/M5 intersections. It took over 3 hours to get over the last 5 miles and the snow settled all the while and thickened. It seems bloody ridiculous how quickly the roads jammed to a grinding halt once the snow took momentum. Ah well, I was due to arrive at Sandwell Field Sport
  25. Hi Holly. Well done with your shooting sweetheart . Always remember, practice whenever you can and listen to what daddy tells you. Especially about staying safe. It's very easy to have a terrible accident, as I know only too well with my silly cousin and his air rifle. He shot me!! All the best Holly honey. Simon
