  1. the way I hunt is the way my father and other older hunters teached me when I was a boy,it worked for them and still works for me.For my experience in a big set 2 dogs will bolt their quarry faster,I know its dangerous but we still do it expecially in rock.my dog is not hard by anyones standards, but works well and has the all important ability to adapt to the situation.I mean he will stand back and bay when he faces hard quarry and he will go harder when he faces easier quarry.Lots of dogs selected on fox only will allways go hard and if they meet a something harder they will end up well beat
  2. I'm not so stupid to put photos of that quarry on a pubblic forum and thats all.I think every one know what i'm talking about.if you want to know our way of hunting is a very simple way go to a set,put a dog in no matter what live in the set, wait for a bolt if it dont appens put another dog,if even it fails to bolt you dig.If the dogs quit put another or two others.loks very simple and i've yet to see a fox giving us so much problems.i've seen dogs die soffocated, killed by badgers, killed by too much porcupine spikes or trapped in rock,I've seen dogs enter in a den and simply disappear but not
  3. I've worked dogs in rock for many years and I still work a lot of undiggable earths if you want to impress me try another way
  4. certanly a fox can match a terrier in a tight place, but the problem is the earth not the quarry, the same fox in a bigger place is not as difficoult.but my question is are we losing something selecting the terriers on fox?I think we are losing the use of the voice and the ability to adapt to the situation
  5. How do you rate fox as a test for a terrier?I dont rate it too much,I've never seen a fox as a challenge for dogs,I rate it the easiest quarry you can find underground here in Italy.I think selecting working terriers on fox we are losing something mainly in the use of the voice.I think only 10% or less of fox dogs will make the grade on hard quarry. Only my two pence tought.
  6. as we have many eyes injuries do to porcupines I can tell you the best thing is Xantervit antibiotic gel
  7. I've used it on my dogs for years, its good for worms, thicks, mange and other skin problems and even hearthworm.but you need to bee carefull use 4ml*10 kilos of weight. another good and cheap wormer is Nemex pop caps
  8. I've tried my terrier for bushing but it was a total disaster,he was allways going to ground on his own. I'll have a spaniel or an hound.
  9. looking at my dog's pedigree his blood go back to old English lines:Foxwarren,Hoelio and Ridley.I know something about Foxwarren having read Chapmans book and I know Hoelio breeder was the famed terrierman Barry Jones and that's all. Were good working lines?anyone know something?
  10. what the hell you know about me and my dogs and my hunting ?how you can judge?start to use your brain. we live in different countries ,we hunt different quarry in different places, you can't judge my dogs,I cant judge jours
  11. My dog is a kc parson an is as good for real underground work as every other dog I've had
  12. Here where I live the woods are so thick than a lurcher will be of no use,a fox can run under mediterranean bush at full speed but a dog can't do the same thing .Second it's down to local tradition,we allways bolt quarry to guns, this is the way we have hunted for many years.Shooting bolters in thick woods is really hard even for good shooters and I think is more a sport than using nets.
  13. Tappo is going really well ,he has recovered really fast and I think he'll be ready to start hunting as soon as the weather gets colder, probably mid-october.
  14. you can't be sure to know all the earths in an area expecially here with the mediterranean woods we have. last year my dog went to ground not too far from my house in a small one holer hidden inside a big blackberry bush. I and members of my family and friends hunted there for all our life but no one has known of this set.
  15. I want my terrier to do his underground work,I dont need an allrounder.most of my hunting is to wild boars and I've good hounds for this .I've tried to work my terrier with them but it didnt work,he was allways going to ground on his own So i've decided to work him only to ground.
  16. he's getting better . tomorrow we'll have new blood testing to see how his liver and kidneys are going
  17. yesterday morning I had my terrier out for a walk in the woods near my house when I noticed him walking like a drunked man and with some blood on his nose.I looked at him and I was sure he was bitten by a viper (vipera aspis)the only poison snake living here in Italy.I. drove to the vet like a man possessed but when I arrived there the dog looked like he has no hopes he was pissing blood and his muzzle was so deformated that he looked like a bulldog. he has fighted for life for 30 hours but one hour ago he get up on his leg and drinked some water. He is not yet out of danger but is a tough guy
  18. always used straw in the winter, nothing in the summer
  19. 95% of the terriers hunted here in italy are jagd terriers all of my hunting mates work them, they are really good dogs, sometime a bit too hard. I'think their hunting stile is similar to your black dogs cos they were breed from black fells.
