Sighting up with open sights
markha replied to Shaunm41's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Just a quick thougth on iron sights - The slider on the rear sight would be slid to the very bottom for longer distances and raised higher up for closer distances, so if you have slid your sight to the lowest point it can go ie close to the body of the gun, then you have set the zero for long distance. -
Sighting up with open sights
markha replied to Shaunm41's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
I think the best thing to do is go somehwere that you can measure out some different distances and put targets up, Im sure with a bit of time you will find out where the sights, at the lowest setting you have, produce a 'zero' from there you can work out longer and shorter ranges by aiming higher or lower. To work out where your zero point would be I would need the pellet weight you are using and the ftlbs of the gun, a quick google gave power as anywhere between 7 and 9 ftlbs. Based on a 15gr 22 pellet and 7ftlbs and your point of impact being (poi) 2" high at a measured 10 yards woul -
Hi All, Whilst trawling around for information on air pressure regulators for the AA s410 I came across a guy in Europe who makes them for all types of pcp guns. I emailed him for information and prices and he replied with a price of Euros 69 including postage to the UK. Now faced with the prospect of the reasonable price compared with the BTAS conversion, Im seriously considering this. Has anyone come across this pressure regulator and/or what are your thoughts? Cheers Mark regulator pictures Also found this thread on airgun forums , so now a little bit more and have a b

AA s410 Chrono test results
markha replied to markha's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Thats interesting Stevieskin as Air Arms factory quoted the 5.52 diablo field ,over the phone , as being 16.4gr so thats what I based the chrono on, i havent weighed them myself as I dont have scales, and bow to your weighing of a lot of them and will call them 16gr as an average. Cheers for that info. Mark -
AA s410 Chrono test results
markha replied to markha's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Well I was a bit quiet work wise today so decided to run a whole heap of shots through the chrono. Started at 190 bar fill and finished at 100 bar. starting ftlbs was 10.92 finishing at 10.68 Lowest was 10.52 and highest was 11.47 All with AA diablo fields 16.4gr The sweet spot was definately from around 25 shots in from a 190 bar fill right through to the 65th shot at around 130 bar, Or a starting fill of around 175 bar to be on the sweet spot. So a possible 40 consistent shots. Boring but true and I only had to do it once, now what else can the devil do for idle han -
Combro CB625 chrony Mk4 is what I have, OK so its for .22 air rifle but its got a pretty large diametre in between the sensors, just measure it and 10mm dia projectile would give enough clearance. You simply enter the weight in grains of your load and then shot away, readings in fps and ftlbs. Loads of reviews on the web about them.

Im not going to bother ribbing you as its already ben done, good work on catching a rabbit by stealth, guille and camouflage, i guess then, some of your sneaky beaky approach must have been 'motion camouflage'. Cheers Mark

Or you could be crawling?

I Read this article and found it very interesting. It basically about how the motion of a predator animal isnt seen by its prey, OK so it is a bit technical but worth a read, plus theres lots of other stuff on the web about it. http://www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/~aja/motion_cam.html#motion_camouflage

Its seems, from all the threads on all forums across the web, that Air Arms Field domed are a great pellet worth starting out with. I have an s410 and it realy does like AA field diablo in 5.52 size. I havent tried the FX as my local gunshop doesnt stock it, I will give it a try when I come across them as Phantom reckons they are pretty good.

Today saw the arrival in the post of a combro cb625 Mk4 chrono. This thing is fantastic, so simple to set up and use. I have probably put around 200 slugs through my new AA S410, so its not run in yet. I did ring AA yesterday to ask them what the factory test was, he said it came out between 550-560 ftlbs edit:hahahaha FPS, Well spotted Phantom I took his word AA Diablo Field 5.52 16.4gr av 550fps av 11.1 ftlbs H&N FTT 5.53 15.1gr av 561fps av 11.6 ftlbs Premier Ultra Magnum 14.3gr av 548fps av 10.3 ftlbs So Im very happy that i dont have one of the rogue low p

Can anyone help identify this gun?
markha replied to autopsy42's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
You should put this in the technical questions section, youll get far more answers. -
very quick Daveyt63 and beat me to it!

Spooky voice " perhaps there's a curse of the bunnies" in that cemetry!

Hi Phantom, Thanks for the point Im glad it has refreshed you and reminded you of all those great days you may have had in the mountains, and perhaps the crap weather you often get in the hills too! Yes, the 5 pebbles in the pocket is a good way of counting off every 100m leg, there are great little plastic counters made by SILVA, that glue to your compass, just click it once for every 100m, job done. Cheers for now Mark

Something that "Marksman" said in a post about estimating that he paced one metre made me think about pacing, something I know a lot about and Im very accurate at doing, its to do with my job as a mountain guide. I have a 32" inside leg and an average natural walking stride. My pace count for 100m dead (accuracy of about 6") is 72 paces. Now, the way you pace out distance in meteres is not by counting every foot step; You count every other footstep. The lowest pace count I have come across with clients is 62 paces, or a very long stride, those who are shorter in the leg and females

camo for my airgun
markha replied to george atkins ga's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Hmm, cam & concealment, the key things are to reduce the following: Shape Shine Shadow silhouette seizmic - vibrations through the ground: your footsteps can be'felt' as well as heard depending on the type of ground your on. Smell - yes scent is a dead give away How do we spot things when hunting or searching? Obviously movement is key, as a predator with 2 forward facing eyes, Eyes that only have the ability to accurately focus on something about the size of your hand at around 7ft away, all the rest is blurred and out of focus, hence the slow sweep of a field for instance, -
Chris, There is only one allen head bolt that holds the stock in place on the 410, its just infront of the trigger guard. If you take the stock off you will be able to check how thick it is at the point where you intend to put your swivel for the bipod/sling. Im also thinking of doing the exact same thing with my 410, and have had a google around for QD swivles and will be watching this thread to see what comes up. atb Mark

Hi Phantom and thanks for the comment about seeing the slug in flight. Ill look out for the FX pellets at my next visit to the gun shop. Thanks Mark

Thanks for the welcome Phatom and others. Yes very lucky not to have the HW taken from me, he did say that if it had been 15ftlbs and over he would have taken it off me, which I think is fair enough. Well I went out to the farm yesterday and spent ages zeroing in, no problems at 30m but step it out to 40m and I realy had to make sure I had the scope centred on my eye or the POI kept changing. All sorted now though. Im really happy with the gun, but did notice that as the pressure dropped to around 150-140, according to the rifle gauge, I could visibly see the slugs lobbing on to the

Ah, a project is what I now have with my little Meteor MK5, NH56483, made some time from 1979 onwards, and I bought it 2nd hand many years ago. Its already had a bit of extra colour added to the stock, so its no longer original and I wouldnt feel bad about a complete bare wood refinish, so thats job number 1. When I was a bit younger I had also shortened the barrel a little and removed the original blue, now I cant make the barrel longer but I can reblue it. The cylinder blue isnt too bad, its almost like black paint? perhaps they did paint them, or someone else has, not me for sure.
-
I still have my very 1st gun from when I was a lad, A Meteor .177, Its all a bit loose in the stock now and no amount of tightening the screws helps, I guess it may be time to give it some TLC as its had a hard life.
