  1. What are you looking for to swap? How much would you want to buy it?
  2. On the contrary Simon. Once they have applied the conditions, getting rid of them is the devils own job. Have the argument at initial issue time, when applying restrictive conditions could be classed as a constructive refusal to issue.
  3. You do know that shooting hare with a lamp is illegal right?
  4. moon, admit nothing. They need to prove that you were doing something illegal, and four months afterwards they'll struggle to prove anything!
  5. The answer as to range is "what range can you reliably put the bullet where you need it to be to ensure a clean humane kill" so yes, you will get different answers from different people. The .22LR will have enough energy at 200 plus yards to kill a rabbit cleanly, in fact probably a lot further than that, but I don't know anyone who would realistically say they can accurately place a .22LR round at that range.
  6. The smallest centrefire you'll normally find is a .17, which fires a similar bullet to the .17 rimfires but much faster. Then you move on to the .20 calibres, then the .22's, then the .240/6mm calibres. The .22LR will kill both rabbits and foxes, though it's perhaps not the ideal round for foxes in all conditions. The HMR will kill foxes at sensible ranges but unless you are accurate will make a mess of bunny. The WMR is a good foxing round, but again will make a bit of a mess of a bunny. The centrefire's will all happily kill foxes, but will leave you very little rabbit to do anything wit
  7. Different world over there, law enforcement types carry loaded weapons most of the time.
  8. The name tells you the difference. A rimfire is fired by striking the rim of the head of the case with the firing pin. The priming compound is spun into the rim during manufacture, and the crushing action of the firing pin causes the primer to explode, igniting the propellant. A centrefire has the priming compound in a cup shaped cap in the centre of the cartridge head, which is struck by the firing pin. A rimfire has several limitiations. The maximum pressure achievable (and hence velocity/power) is limited by the relatively soft brass that has to be used so that the rim can be crushed. A
  9. danw, that one has been around for a while, and is definitely not a fake. What's more shocking about it is the fact that he's a law enforcement officer, and so is supposed to be well trained, and he STILL manages to shoot himself. Adds weight to the old adage "familiarity breeds contempt", but complacency will kill you!
  10. Are both the rings the same way round? You could try taking one off, turning it through 180 degrees and putting it all back together again. Some mounts don't line up perfectly when reversed.
  11. Primer pocket expansion can be a sign of an over pressure loading. If the cases are relatively new, with only a couple or three firings, then that's definitely indicated. If they've been fired a load of times then it could just be old age. Regardless, any case that doesn't firmly retain the primer should be binned, and if you have a lot of cases like it then maybe rethink your loading!
  12. Shooting towards the road bank would be fine with a rimmy. An FAC air won't be any safer than a rimfire, you still need a good backstop. As for the .410, I guess the 2.5" cart gives the pellets a bit further to fly before they hit the forcing cone, so you might get less pellet damage and therefore better accuracy, but that's just conjecture.
  13. The HW35, classic airgun and more than capable of accurate hunting at normal airgun hunting ranges. You'll need to get some practice in to shoot it well, but it'll be more accurate than you are!
  14. When does your cert run out? You don't want to be left illegally in possession of firearms or shotguns! If it's already expired then you need to take your guns to an RFD quick sharp, and then phone them up and ask them to send your renewed cert immediately, or provide you with a temporary cert until they can get the full one to you!
  15. Sjt, modern PCP rifles are extremely reliable and very rarely let you down. If you look after them properly, and replace seals regularly, you should never have any problems. As for the v mach kits, don't even bother. It won't make it shoot any better (probably worse) and you always have the risk of pushing it over the limit and getting in a lot of trouble.
  16. Sorry Ashy, but by your reasoning ALL air weapons would be illegal, as it is possible to make any air weapon fire at above the legal limit given time and effort.
  17. Go for something that's big enough for the biggest quarry that you want. TVP will give you AOLQ, which will cover you for the smaller stuff! Ask for boar if you have somewhere you can shoot them, and deer, and the AOLQ will take care of the rest. Of course, if you ask for deer and then get AOLQ, you can shoot boar too!
  18. I don't know what Beds police give. Shame he's not in TVP area, he'd get AOLQ automatically, and .270 is definitely legal on foxes!
  19. Not particularly Rake, no real reason why it's out of fashion, just the way it goes.
  20. The .308 is perfectly good for all the species mentioned, or a .270, which is the minimum suggested for boar (though a .243 WILL kill them) The .270 will kill anything in the UK with ease, and the added benefit of having a fair few second hand rigs around at sensible prices as it's not a fashionable calibre.
  21. Agreed events co-ordinator, the police aren't experts on the law, and regularly get it wrong. Now if they get it wrong and that puts you on the wrong side of the law, do you think they'll put their hands up and say "oops, sorry, my bad, I told him it was ok when it's not"? I'd suggest not counting on it. Now, as to the legality. If they stop you and confiscate the rifle for testing, they will fire it with a range of pellets over a chronograph. They have to do that AS THE RIFLE IS RECEIVED, anything else would be called tampering with evidence. Now if you are careful and keep your rifle at
  22. I totally agree Simon, each and every incident where a gun is misused (legally held or otherwise) is horrendous, and tragic, and another possible nail in the coffin of legitimate firearms use and ownership. I also think that any move towards more legislation is only ever likely to increase restrictions, and to damage the sport we love. Automatic suspension or revocation for ANY reason is bad. Of course there are times when it has to be done, when a person is considered a danger, but the line is fine and to equate mental illness with being unfit to hold a certificate is incredibly dangerous
  23. It is Gr, it is. That just adds to the sheer brilliance of the piece. I've not seen it directly reported in any of the other national press either. Talk about alienating your readership!
  24. So, you fall off a ladder at work and break your leg and arm. You are no longer in a position to use your firearms, so they should be taken away? Brilliant logic!
  25. I believe the point grog was making is that all those substances (except aspirin) are psychoactive, and have the potential to effect a significant change on behaviour. As far as I know penicillin isn't considered psychoactive. As for "slipping in to mental illness" and removing firearms, it's an incredibly slippery slope. The ultimate extension of which leads to us locking up people diagnosed with depression "for their own good". A knife, even a bottle, becomes a dangerous weapon if the person holding it decides to use it thus Do you propose national licencing of knives and bottles (no
