  1. Hello All, Im hoping you lads can help me. I have a 13 month old springer dog that is my first working dog,,, Yes im probly the worlds worst trainer but this is my problem. Hes very good at flushing and picking up and not gun shy however when i first slip his lead he has started to take off like a lurcher on speed, when he retrieves anything he brings it to me sits and waits for me to take it from him ,,,,,,, then hes off after a second pick up even when there isnt one.. A kick back from this is that his kennel mate ( 12m/o bitch ) is following his lead. The only reason i can think
  2. Boxlock v sideplate, they are the same thing, the side plates are there to make the gun look like a sideLOCK, the sideplates make no difference to the action or its strength, they do however make the gun look nice and let the makers jack up the price. The SIDELOCK is a different ball game, sometimes called a "hammerless" or "internal hammer" gun, the sidelocks of yesteryear were very much stronger then the boxlocks of this era and had the advantage of being much easier to strip and clean/repair. However the sidelock was much harder to build and so was to remain the ear mark of " A Best En
  3. Over decoys let the birds come in ,,, then you fire choked barrel at an incomer ( slow shot lots of time), then the open second is for a bird leaving in panic not so much time here so the open choke helps
  4. Had this problem years ago when loading " British303" The answer was to "anneal" the case necks and only neck size them. I only mention his as you seem to tumble your cases rather a lot, as brass will work harden the constand bashing together in a tumbler "might" be hardening your cases. Brass will also harden with age.
  5. At 32" it sounds like it could be a TRAP gun ,,,,, if it is then the drop and cast will be different to a sporting gun ,,,, trap guns "dont" make good all rounders. As Goldfinger said fit is most important and feel if it feels right it is. Having said that for many years i used a Browning 32" SKEET for ISU and English the barrel length did Help it slowed down my swing and stop over lead. As for choke, well theres a lot of talk about choke and range and all kinds of folk lore about it. The truth is a single pellet of No 6 shot has the same range and power no matter what choke you push it thro
  6. Had both trap and skeet versions,,,,,,, good sound guns but traded them in for Brownings

  9. Need some advise please. Last Thursday my 11month Springer dog had his way with my 9month Springer bitch, however im not sure they locked,,,,,,, so sunday morning we were off to the vet for the morning after jab,,, and part 2 on Tuesday morning,,,,,, all was going well until this evening, my helpful 78y/o Mum thought it was such nice a nice evening she would let the dogs out to play in the garden............... Need i say more and this time they did lock. My question is ,, is it too soon to have her rejabbed. If so what options are open to me,,,,,,, lol ive already booked Mum a one way

  13. Hello Lads, I may be wrong but i think you all seem to think i want a light 243 deer load,,,, no what i want is to down load to a light bullet for use on FOX, for the deer id use the 100g load. My problem isnt rate of twist, too much powder weight of bullet its this ,,, I cant justify buying a rifle that may only be used once or twice a year,, the way i see it its better to use a light loaded bigger gun for fox than try to pump up a small gun to use on deer
  14. The .243 Winchester By Chuck Hawks Illustration courtesy of Hornady Mfg. Co. The .243 Winchester is a better varmint cartridge than the .25's, while remaining adequate for deer and antelope. The .243 launches an grain varmint bullet at a muzzle velocity (MV) of about 3,350 fps. This means that it shoots about as flat as a .22-250, only its grain spitzer bullet has a BC of .365, compared to the 55 grain .22 spitzer's BC of .255. This is an enormous difference, and explains why the .24's are so much better than the .22's on windy days. When using the .243 to hunt medium size b
  15. Hello, I used a LeeLoadall for many years in my clay busting days,, It loaded many thousands of rounds for both clay and game all to factory spec. Its been a long time but i think i used to get around 300 loads from a tin of Nobel but its easy to work out you know the weight of powder in the tin just divid by the weight of the load you use ,, in my case it was 24,5g of Nobel for a 1 1/8 load ,,, you can do the same with shot. the only difference i made between clay loads and game loads was i used Nobel 82 for game slower powder and easier on the shoulder. The difference with clay loads
  16. Ive been informed they are Roe Deer, and in England
  17. Hello Chocky, Yes i did wonder about a 22/250 but know very little about them. What im after is a cartridge thats will give me near to flat traj out to around 200yards give or take a mile or three, plus the added problem of the odd shot at deer, as the deer will be very few and far between i didnt want to tie up the cash in a rifle i wont need very often, thats why i was looking at a down load for a 243 for fox ( a 50/55g bullet) then on the odd days ill get to bash Bambi i can use a full 243 load, cheaper to tie up a few quid in ammo then a lot of quids in a rifle. What i was trying
  18. If its double fired get the hinge pin checked you may find its now OFF THE FACE, had this happen with a 16bore hammer gun ,,,, it blew it off the face needed rejointing
  19. Well i think ive solved the problem Gona sell the girl Friend into the white slave trade then i can have both .222 and a 243
  20. Spoke to my member of the plod today and as he is a shooting man himself so understood what i was after ,,,, he seemed happy with the 243 whatever i shove through the tube, so looks like its gona be a 243 with the 58Vmax as that seems to get the vote amongst you lads
  21. Thank you gentlemen, Some very helpful info from you all. Gave me lots to work with, ill keep you informed on my progress. Tom
  22. Thank you Gentlemen, Some interesting stuff there, lots to think about,,, however the idea was to use the light bullet for fox and factory loads for deer. The rate of twist isnt a problem at this point as i have not yet bought a rifle for either job, what started me thinking about this was that years ago, i used some Remington ( think they were called Exellorator) which were a 30-06 with plastic sabot around a ( i think .243 bullet), they seemed ok against paper,i just wondered if there was a way of loading a 243 to get the 2 option loads Tom
  23. Hello People, Does anyone know of a 55 or 60g bullet thats useable in a 243Win. I want to try working up a light flat shooting 243, the idea being if i can load a 243 to give similar performance to a 222 or 223 i only need 3 rifle not 4.. My originaly idea was a .22lr, .17hmr and a 222rem,,,,,,,,,, then a good friend told of a patch of grass he has that has deer,,,, so meaning a forth rifle. Any ideas would be most interesting. Thanks Tom
  24. Another good place for Landy bits and bobs is Craddocks of Canock bit cheaper too
