  1. run mine behind either the motor, quad or pushbike, every day. Some dogs may not do the whole journey, if at all due to me saving their energy for work that day/night. But on a day off from work, all my dogs (bar retired/pups/injured) will do between 3 and 10 miles running/trotting all year round.
  2. Nice to see a young bitch putting some serious meat on the table for the first time.

  3. I seem to be busy all year round with one thing or another, this next couple of months il be keeping on top of corvids and stoats/weasels. Il be trapping mink, and il start flushing mink to the guns once the burns are warm enough to wade through. Gray squirrel control. Lots of fishing with a few friends and plenty of cans in the evenings. Ferreting/lamping rabbits if they are causing damage. Keeping the dogs fit and active. But im looking forward to next hunting season allready, as usual
  4. Interesting, ive never used them with tredplates before, il have to give them a go. Where do ye get them from pal? edit>>>>> i was too busy looking at your pictures, i see your mate made them for you. Have you noticed any real advantage over the normal prongs in any situations or were they more of an experiment? Thanks
  5. theres plenty of people on here sticking up for this dog that has been shot, would their dogs also swim a burn to attack a cocker spaniel? Something seriously wrong there dont you think?
  6. I think your right, ive been told it has something to do with local genetics, but im affraid im lost when it comes to this subject. I can only go off what ive found.
  7. Depends where you live J.Darcy... they are very common in my area in the winter, ive trapped literally thousands of them through my life as keeper and also the hardness of the winter doesnt seem to be a factor (like another post said) as I seemed to trap as many ermine in mild winters as i did in hard winters The very odd white weasel has been trapped, but ive never seen or trapped one myself
  8. ummmmm, strange, well this was defo white, with a brown patch, like i said i haven't ever seen anything like this before It will have been a stoat
  9. Not many weasels go white in the UK at all though
  10. I use the same tool, but ive had mine shortened by the gun smith, never had a problem with it
  11. Iv had to get shot of a couple of ex mrs before as they were trying to stop me hunting (working) every day, and spend more time with them.
  12. I dont mean to state the obvious but dont you think a decision like this, may have been better, once you realised that the dog wasnt going to make the grade, about 4 or 5 years ago?
  13. No probs Am glad ya enjoyed it. It was great seeing one of these birds up close and personal after seeing them in action for so long around the area. Im lucky to have seen many up close, beautiful birds that always captivate me with their cold stare, and purposeful nature.
  14. Just read this thread, very funny, I cant belive there is even a debate about this! Like many have said, ITS A FEMALE SPARROWHAWK lol even male and female sparrowhawks look totally different, there is NO confusion here what-so-ever. Thanks for sharing the pictures John Gallway it has made entertaining reading for me!
  15. Id be saying-- the owners of the 'blacks' you have seen, are crap, if what you say is true. Who could keep a terrier with no nose, it wouldnt be able to mark or find in the big spots, it would be useless to me and I think most people would feel the same.
  16. Your from Cumbria, I know a few who work borders in Cumbria, some good dogs amongst them.
  17. I think there are some good replies to your question here. Id like to add one more point, and that is that the greyhound side of most lurcher mixes is often overlooked, and the attributes in the lurcher are almost always given to the other breed(s). In my experience greyhounds are often very keen and quite game dogs in their own right.
  18. I only had to read one page to see if anyone had put something similar to me and i belive this bloke hit the nail on the head! i think he,s missed the nail by a mile, nothing can give an 100% all the time its imposible. even the fittest human in the world could not run many 200 mitres flat out, they would be slowining at the end of the first run,if they had a couple minutes and tried a gain they would be slower still and struggle .theres also mental side of it I belive that there are dogs that will put all they can into every run, however they will also need something between the ear
  19. Great thread Ned, with some really good pictures aswell. I agree, and im sure most UK and Irish dog men will relate to this post, as we too treasure a friendly and balanced temperament when not hunting, yet once game is on the cards the swith has been flicked! Keep the stories and pictures coming pal, its great to see.
  20. There was 2 on that bush thing i just got 1 mankey shot of them both & concentrated on the one who was eating the berrys on that bush thing fantastic pictures, really some of the best shots ive seen of a waxwing
  21. Ive got to say lads, those sal/grey bull/grey look very nice, ive seen plenty of both types work, but not the combined breeding. id like to see one go myself, as I bet the issues some bull crosses have regardin feet will be overcome, plus added stamina perhaps, though ive seen some bull cross that have great stamina. Very useful looking dogs lads, credit to you!
