  1. Bread f**k outta it. Works for fish and mushrooms innit.
  2. I think whippet has a lot to add to any breeding of small cover working lurchers, from what i have seen, the right ones have brilliant noses, and are very terrier like with their work ethic etc. I'm thinking forward a couple of years about breeding from my lad . . . .and whether i would breed up in size etc, looking to make a pure runner, or breed towards a good little cover working / bushing tyke. . . . Had all kinds of thoughs, including a pure collie.
  3. Long-tail - i know you weren't saying that mate, it was just a general comment, when discussing cover dogs, that folk often say that their lurchers etc will work cover as well as any spaniel or terrier, when the simple fact is they will not, mainly just due to build, size etc. However there are definatly some runners that are great cover hunters and work scents and the terrain really well, and other that couldnt find a bunny in a phone box. The best combination i think is a good cover working runner, a dedicated cover dog, and then possibly a runner that hangs back around you, as they can
  4. I have a wee dog here thats main talent is hunting up and bushing in the day, if it's there he will find it, whatever it is, fur or feather, he might not catch it, but he will find it and get it moving. He will follow air scents, until he hits a ground scent and then follow that to the quarry. I've seen him cover huge distances with his nose to the ground, and he usually always finds what he is looking for. He does the freeze and dive quite a bit at rabbits in cover. Having said all that, he still wouldn't beat a good terrier at working hard cover, and anyone who says a runner can, is a bi
  5. To be honest mate, your 7/8 whippet 1/8 collie was partly what inspired us, she is a cracking looking dog.
  6. I just realised it's veedublee, i was going to say, it's weird you seem to have the exact same combination of dogs. . . . .
  7. Aye, cos someone thinks a man is a total fecking muppet, and shouldnt be held up as a respectful figurehead for fieldsports, they should get in contact with him and offer to fight him. Aye, makes sense
  8. Be interesting to see how she goes for you, would be good to see her progress.
  9. SHe looks a good dog mate, just saw the ears and dash of white, so figured she was a cross.

    Outlaws

Got some kids i work with who's parents are involved, it's all pretty mad and they take it all very seriously. Just another thing for a bunch of blokes to 'belong' to and run around playing gangs. I wouldnt argue with them though.
  11. CG - Do you know which way round it was bred? A friend and I have often mused about collie x whippets, but you never see them around. Always imagined they might be a bit cloddy in 1st x? But that one looks racy enough!
  12. You are right Tyla. When you see a thread has made over a page, you can usually gaurentee that its full of arguments and crap, rather than anything decent.
  13. Nice. Is that a lab x springer?
  14. Whats your main quarry? In theory - Hare - Sal x. Fox - Beddy x. Rabbit - Collie x.
  15. OK, so i understand what you are saying, and i believe that all stock, of whatever type, should be cared for to the best of your ability, and that obviously includes any neccessary trips to the vets. However, the point that i was making was, most people, even those with the best stock care in the world, very rarely rush any animal to the vets as soon as it appears a little under the weather. Obviously if you come out and your dog / ferret (whatever) is looking in obvious pain, or just fecked, then you rush it in, however, when they go a bit quiet and mopey, or go off their food etc, most of us
  16. I agree very much with your points moll, the only problem is trying to explain it all to the dog. He has had his fair share of bangs, and needs work on two leg muscles daily. But he's 'dedicated' to say the least, and where i live, unfortunatly there are very few places to go for just a walk, and those are filled with idiots and idiot dogs. Todays little excitment took me entirly by surprise, but usually i can see it coming and make a decision to keep him close, stick him on a lead or change directions. The worst was some time ago, walked out the front door and over the road, and bang up g
  17. Aye, it's not so bad on the open moors or mountain tops / sides either, as usually your line of sight is great, but much of the land i / we hunt is woodland / forestry or really rough ground full of ravines and ditches and wee hills and valleys, or a combination of all of the above. I spend a lot of my time listening rather than watching. It's quite cool though when a dog suddenly reappears lugging what it has caught Or you follow the sounds to the prize.
  18. You see, the kind of land i hunt and the kind of little obsessive, stubborn wee b*****d that i find as my canine hunting partner he acts like a terrier) mean that often i spend a large part of any walk not being able to see the dog and just following on, or standing somewhere and letting him work the surrounding land. He tends to work out and back, and if you stay still he will (so far) always come back to check in with you, if you keep moving, he will keep moving. It's amazing how much game he finds, and how often i either miss the action and he returns with it or i catch up to him with it, a
  19. This might sound like an odd question, and is aimed more (or entirely) to those who work their dogs a lot in the daytime, hunting up, mooching and bushing, but how often are you unsighted from your dog? And how long does the dog have to be out of sight before you start to get a bit twitchy? I was thinking about this today because i was walking with the mutts in a very large forest, with a mixture of huge close packed firs in blocks, old growth and new growth deciduous (sp?), and massive clear fell, brush areas, and at two points i found myself standing about waiting for one of the three do
  20. i live near the forest of dean, it's a beautiful place, some of the locals are a bit special though. Plenty of wildlife and wild space. The bear refers to a bit of local history, a bear was killed, but who killed the bear?
  21. Your girlfriend sounds like a lucky girl.... You come across as a real nice fella, although after seeing a pic of you I dont think i'll trade my fella in just yet Thankyou Gem, that's a really lovely thing to say, you come across as a bit of a star as well Not every woman is into blokes that look like religious deitys, so i can understand the last bit
  22. And don't mention the Bear.
