Wales waleslurcher and terrier show
Ideation replied to boyo's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
an a pleasure to meet you both i must have seen you all there! Ideation, were you the fella that got the abuse from the blondes other half? Ha ha mate. . . . yes that was me . . . getting myself in trouble, turns out not everyone has a sense of humour. Almost got punched and got beaten in the whippet class by a load of show ponies, so not the best day for me But i enjoyed it, met a few good folk, and watched the dogs. Johnnyboys kids walked away with ten rosettes and a trophy, so they were buzzing like a fridge. Pretty much no terriers, but i think that was a lot to do with the amount -
pretty much what id want jai, but id also want it to be out more than its in, if it could do all that an do it everyday/nite, then id only need 1 lurcher Aye, add 'doesn't break' to the list

Briefly, something with a really good nose, that could find game anywhere, lots of stamina, to hunt all day, bags of brains, and be able to hunt independantly of commands, fast when needed, good strike, good feet, nice and robust and strong, but agile. Able to take whatever gets up, or at least have a good go. Plenty of heart and drive. Decent coat and skin. Retrives. Comes back when called. Couldnt care less what it was or looked like if it could do that.

Maybe you need to have a look at a map. . . it's only one, or maximum two countrys you need to drive across.

I ask my self that question a lot mate, and in a couple more years, once a few thngs are finished, me and my girlfriend are off, to buy somewhere over seas, and leave these shores behind, hopefully somewhere with much better hunting. As for driving to Africa, you could be in North Africa in a couple of days from getting on the boat over the channel. Taking dogs would be a lot of red tape, but is possible, but it'd be better to go local and just watch local dogs, which if you knew the right folk and had a handle on the language / help, would not be too hard, enthusiasts tend to get a long.

That sounds about right mate, good post

We just ask the landowner, what they want, and usually all they want is a serious reduction, and so we hit it hard again and again by day and night over a short space of time in winter, and that usually rips the guts out of them, and then have a quick check before seasons end. Most of the time, the population doesnt build up to a noticable level until end of summer anyway, then we start back. Most places though never recover to anywhere near the original level. And the farmers etc always have the card and number and know they can call at anytime if something needs sorting.

trust you fannybaws ha Technically if your dogs are not catching then your not hunting mate so thats you out....... But to answer the question i cant really say i do 'hunt'...ever!! I shoot a few pigeons in the winter for the freezer and making soup, i shoot the odd deer when in season,i shoot any fox i see 365 days a year on the rearing field and i shoot maybe twice a year at pheasants. The only thing i do do is work my dogs picking up maybe 40 days in the season and i can hardly call that hunting. Am i banned now.... That's a shit load more than a lot of the folk on here mate

That's pretty much the attitude of most round here now, got to get in first, or some other f****r will, so its getting earlier every year, with may being a very popular month these days.

Some interesting comments. Lab at least your honest haha. PJ - I think that falls under the 'got a valid excuse' category. Can't really be used for the many many folk that poach though, they cant exactly hold the farmer / permission up as an excuse. In general though, unless it's new permission, you wont have that problem if you have hit it in winter, and if you do, then it probably means the place is over run, and so quarry levels will not be affected that much by you hunting it in summer. Paulus - that doesnt count, i mean activly going out lamping, shooting or digging quarry for

I've always thought the same, but these days everyone i meet seems to have some get out clause . . . . . there aint any get out clauses.come the very worst of winter and theres very little quarry to go at .where are the t,shirt brigade then,,,,,,in the feckin pub bumming there load.stick to your principles pal. Glad someone else feels the same, round here there are way more foxes killed in may / june then from september - march.

To be honest, i think most folk with some kind of clue at the time, very much expected a war in the former yugoslavia. But i concur that i would rather hve them on my side, well the bosnians anyway, than the brits. I've played paintball against yugoslavians in a bombed out sarajevo tower block, it got emotional, it hurt. you would rather have bosnian's on your side over brit's because you have played paintball with them No mate, i would rather have the bosnians 30-40 year olds i know on my side in a fire fight than the 30-40 year olds that i know / meet in britian. . . . . why?

Just a couple of questions, after having a funny kind of day today. Who on here can honestly say that they don't summer hunt, and don't jump on the chance of doing it, and being able to use 'pest control' as the excuse (different from doing a call out when there is a genuine reason). and secondly - If you have access to land, and other folk hunt it as well, who love going out and filling their boots in summer, do you stick to your principles and keep to the winter, or just f**k it and do what they do, but try and get in first, killing as much as you can in summer?

GS - that was a very good post mate. I don't really get all the fuss, every dog, everywhere, no matter how good, will at some point, be related to a dog that is crap, especially if there are a few litters knocking about.

I'll go for the chicken wire, we don't have much of a fox problem here. But cheers for the advice.

Just to give you some more info- i've not built the enclosure yet, and i have plenty of room to play with, as im building it in my field. I'm wanting to keep something for a bit of interest, for eggs and maybe meat, and ideally something i can breed, to give me something to do. I think i will get some quails for the eggs, for i;m not adverse to something else as well, just give me some suggestions lol. I already have chickens. The pens will be built out of regular fence posts, with chicken wire around them and over the top, and buried a little way under the ground, angled out and secured w

Some interesting sub-arguments here. I don't really agree that keeping a dog in a house makes it less tough, although they do probaby get a thicker jacket living out all the time, but if they are worked hard enough, they should see plenty of harsh weather, and not everyone has their house that warm anyhow. Also, i do agree with Giros point, that of all types of lurcher work, lampng, for obvious reasons, attracts the largest number of idiots. But not sure either of those things have feck all to do with minshaws.

Never really enjoyed ferreting to the gun, done it a fair bit, but the noise just kind of ruins it for me. And muzzles are a stupid idea.

Do other types of quail rear their young? And how hardy are they? And finally, any other suggestion other than quail?
