  1. Andy - you have kept so many dogs that i REALLY like the look of, especially bulpha, jack and don, very different from some of the other minshaw 'lines' that i have seen about. Do you think it's really fair to lump them all together as minshaws, because they all had some kind of shared beginnings. The collie curs you have been running over the years are very very appealing to us here, over some of the others, they look just right, put together for the job at hand. I would love to be able to go back in time with you and watch Bulpha and Jack work.
  2. The lads who got these pups Whin were never under any illusion as to what they may or may not achieve..as i ain't with my own dogs..they wouldn't of been heading down the Fens with them or going for Red Deer had they been born 10 years earlier i don't think? They will hopefully serve the purpose which the lads got them for which i assume is as you say for rabbiting...fingers crossed they can lamp, hunt and work with the ferts...plenty of fun still to be had there imo? ..i know you say you've done all of that and you've bettered your dogs and moved on to dogs that suit the land you hunt and i sa
  3. Aye, he's a good looking hound rake. What height has he made?
  4. You are right Vin mate, sometimes you just have to take a moment and look about, and realise how lucky you actually are in comparisson to some folk, who's lives are truly crap, or those who were cut shirt before their time. You know what, i'd never have thought it when i first joined, but there are some truly great, lovely, caring, friendly folk on THL, along with all the idiots.
  5. I dunno mate, i've 'met' some very hot american girls, and they all seem fairly easy to get into bed if your a brit, or maybe it's cos i look like jesus and they have a fetish? Mostly not that bright, but hot and accomodating. Also it's funny, some of the very worst folk i have met have been american and yet some of the very best have as well. id say the whole "water into wine" could of had a lot to do with it alright. Being deadly serious, a lot of that time, i was wearing white robes and sandals and carrying round a lot of wine There is even a photo of my somewhere
  6. I personally wouldnt go to him, but like has been said, with all that are bred, some will be very good, many average and some very poor. If you are after a genuine first x, t the end of the day you are unlikely to get one out of a working grey and hunting collie anyway, so the collies and greys he uses are probably as good as owt else about. But it just doesnt sit right with me, the way it's all done. Having said that, i've spent a long time trying to find a decent collie lurcher pup for myself and i'm still searching, they are like hens teeth, because every fecker just goes to hancock, an

  8. Cheers all and some very wise words. Bird - i've got space nw mate.
  9. That is a very fair post mate, and i wasn't knocking the judging of the show, at the end of the day it will always come down to what the man in the ring likes the look of on the day, it's a show, not a working test. I wasn't crabbing about who was picked in anyway, it's just a show. However r.e. working vs non working - i think you can look at a dog, especially a breed like a whippet and see it, those that are worked hard, have a more muscled and tougher all round build, that you only really get from hours and hours of running each and every week. I've also never seen a working whippet th
  10. You are right mate, they are mans best friend. They just know you, like no other animal. Finn knows when to give me a wide bearth, and when i need affection. There have been a couple of times i have been really upset and i dont like to show it infront of anyone, so have taken myself off, but the dog has followed me and just climbed onto my lap and rubbed his face into mine. It makes me feel even worse for the times when he was younger that i gave him probably a few too many smacks, i see hm looking at me when i get angry now, thinking 'he's going to belt me in a second', and its taught me,
  11. Was in the airport the other day - golden virginia - 98 euro if flying to the e.u and 45 if flying elsewhere, for 500 grams, so it makes you realise that the duty is more than half the cost, no wonder folk smuggle it a lot now.
  12. You are right mate, i spent a lot of time chasing women, from all over the world, and in the end i stumbled across a quiet english girl, who had never hunted a day in her life, years later, she makes me happier than anyone, i still think she is beautiful, and she has been out with me in all kinds of weathers doing all kind of daft things with dogs, ferrets, guns etc. A good woman is a wonderful thing.
  13. Cheers Dave, i'm sure it will all work out, i'm usually too busy to be down in winter, but summer i have time to think a lot, and for a young man, my body feels old haha, too much time out in the cold and wet and not looking after myself. But like you said, i'm sure it will pick up, and by winter i wont be thinking about anything other than hunting.

  15. Aye guys, you are right, i've got a nasty habit at the moment of taking it out on the dog, and treating him like a person. He's wise enough though to stay at a distance until i've realised im being a proper twat, and then when i stop and sit down, and apologise, he comes running in to throw himself all over me and i feel even worse about being angry at the little sod. If it wasn't for the dog/s i don't know what i'd do at times. I hope life looks up for you soon stan
  16. I've had a funny couple of days, culminating in a visit to the doc this afternoon, which was pretty mixed in terms of good / bad news. But on the upside, the sun was shining and the dogs needed walking. Took the three of them out for a wander a long a stream and across some fields, through a gully, around some cows and back home again. I wasn't in the best of moods, and found myself losing my rag at Finn, when he started dicking about over jumping a fence, i found myself getting really f****d off and had to take a step back and realse i was taking out my bad mood on the dog. I sat
  17. Thanks weasle...they serve a purpose mate just as any lurcher should? They certainly all ain't world beaters including some of the ones I've owned lol..Iived the dream? I like that! ...young Bron has came on a bundle since I last seen her, she's shaping up very nicely now? The very best of luck with her and hope she does all you ask of her? ATB Andy I think you have lived the dream mate, but the thing i think many forget is that you did it, it didn't just happen to you, you went out and got stuck in good and proper, that's a big part of why you have had a number of very good dogs, aye th
  18. Not the best of photos, but here is Bron, daughter of Don, taken today on a mouch about. Who knows what the future holds, but she can run, jump, use her nose, nothing scares her and she mostly comes back when called. . . . . so i'd say the future is bright, but we shall see over the next few winters. She will definatly get the chance to prove herself.
  19. I think there are infinite x's and mix's that will physically give you a dog that would be capable of taking all quarry, or at least most (we cant really include big reds), but it's having the right brain, heart and soul that lets most down. Most lads who had them, usually thought more about the lineage of the dogs than the mix that was in them. Although in my opinion, circumstance, opportunity and the dedication / obsession of the handler play just as big a role.
  20. I was thinking about this cross today, some definate up sides, the downside though could be a dog that was as touchy and tempramental as your average woman. In my idle musings i ended on saluki/bull/grey x collie/whippet/grey
  21. An elephant never forgets, so my dick remembers everything.

  22. Please don't threaten to punch me I've had enough of that. I wasn't mouthing off about who won what when the lad wanted to punch me either, it was a totally unrelated issue over shooting foxes Don't get offended, it wasn't meant to be personal, but there was quite a small percentage of proper working dogs at that show, and the whippet class was the biggest of the day as usual, and if they were all workers, i'd love to know what the definition of 'worker' is? There were a couple in there that looked like they had done a bit, but a lot of them didn't look like they knew what a rabbit / rat
  23. If you can convince me it's easy enough, me and the missus would seriously consder America.
  24. Just one thing for the knockers, i know Americans that travel further in their own country to hunt, than we would if we went from the U.K to Africa. I know a lot of yanks don't have passports, but they have a huge area and lots of differing cultures and landscapes they can visit within one country, without a passport. A lot of Brits never really travel abroad, and we live on a postage stamp in comparison! North Africa has jackels amongst other interesting quarry.
