  1. Im not a falconer mate but I do know The HPR breeds and I have a lot of contact with people who work them on Deer/falconry and shooting. Do your self a big favour and take your time. Get a pup from working parents train it well over 3 years and you will have the dog you want. You may even be lucky and get a dog that will do the job at an even younger age but don't push them. As for training the bird I haven't a clue what goes into it. Enjoy the process its a lot more rewarding
  2. Just been out with my wire haired vizsla around a farm I work on just after rabbit and pigeon with my son. And its just a joy to walk around a dog that does it all, pointing rabbits in hedgerows and partridge in wheat, sitting quiet as a lamb in the hide and then out quartering big fields. It doesn't matter that we only got one crow my pleasure came from a young dog coming into his own
  3. Get the retrieve training in quickly and make it a huge game. Cos once it discovers its nose it will just want to hunt
  4. It will take you a while to bond with the dog and if its re call is dodgy what else is? Re call is one of the first lessons learned and if its not right well I wouldn't rush in but as everyone says its your choice and 1200 quid is cheap
  5. you have more chance of buying a unicorn, A fully trained dog would be 3 years old and worth a fortune
  6. We look after dogs and there is a springer that has developed this. My wife has put him on a lead to calm him down and takes him out with calm dogs only it seems to be working
  7. if your not happy you did the right thing, always follow your heart
  8. well I wouldn't use a dog for air gunning as its a stealth sport but if you fancy a dog to take with you look for something steady like a lab
  9. ive seen all of the hpr breeds doing both, I have a vizsla so I am a bit biased mine just works to the gun but there is a whole kennel of them close to us that works to both
  10. spaniels seem to be favourite
  11. Just to add to this my friends springer which is a pet dog and doesn't work at all has had to have its tail removed as he broke it on a walk he still isn't sure how. The vet was all for leaving it to heal crooked but he gave them the option to take it off which they have done. However the dogs tail became infected and the treatment has dragged on. I have an undocked vizsla who hasn't had any problems so far.I bought him from a show breeder so the tails of the pups were left undocked. Show vizslas and working vizslas are still the same breed at the minute! unlike spaniels
  12. I hope it was quick for the dog and the owner, my friend lost her 3 year old gsp last year same sort of thing dog got a scent and went through a hedge too quick to be stopped and was still alive with a broken back poor bugger had to be put to sleep. Three is the golden age for hpr breeds they are just coming right after 3 years of hard work and laughter, to lose her pal was very hard on her. I wish you and the owner well
  13. You will know your own dog if its confident and lets face it most cockers are very confident just do it gradually I got the wife to walk firing a starter pistol at about 100 yards away gradually getting closer. One thing I wouldn't overlook ist carrying the gun. My old dog took a while to get used to me swinging a gun about so if you can carry a gun around with you on a walk and swing it about not firing it. Don't do this in your public park ;0) Merry Christmas
  14. The bird on the horse was mint, you can pick them up on the beach at Benidorm it costs a bit to get the rash sorted out later though!
  15. I have a little sheath knife that has a chipped rose wood handle. The handle was always too small anyway. I have found an antler and wood handle from a walking stick that fits my hands perfectly and would like it fitted by someone who knows how to do a good job. it will probably need a new sheath made as well. If you have the skills let me know and we will sort out a price.
  16. Put the gun away and go hunting. When she finds and points get up to her and push her on to the bird! with a command of your choice and then praise her. she will click after a few goes
  17. I would say yes but is it because the bird was pricked? was it a large bird? My 8 year old labradoodle dog found a really strong runner a few weeks back and retrieved it dead and well bitten a thing he had never done before and I was a bit shocked but when I looked at the circumstances it may have contributed a lot too the end result. The bird was hiding in a pile of brash in an 8 foot sided ditch the water was up to his neck and he could only move forward over and through this pile of twigs and water. The bird, a big cock pheasant made a break for it and I think out of desperation h
  18. Getting rid of pups is hard work and sometimes heartbreaking, I wouldn't bother unless you want a pup yourself, don't rely on what other people say get a deposit from these people who would like a pup from her before you mate her. See who is bull shitting
  19. Cheeers Andy, What you say strikes a note actually he is worse when he sees the bird fall, if he comes across it he is fine
  20. That's the thing Andy 70% of the time he is spot on. He has retrieved dead and pricked birds no problem then an odd time he just gets daft and wants to play I am pretty sure he will grow out of it
  21. That's true Socks but the dog is 20 months old and he isn't a lab but he is taking the piss a bit even for a Viszla! Some good advice lads he will come right im not putting a lot of pressure on him as he is a clown
  22. Thanks Dan I will give it a go, Im surprised no one has helped before now people on here are usually red hot at trying to help out
  23. My young Vizsla is very inconsistent with retrieving shot game, sometimes no bother at all sometimes throwing it about like a toy. Anybody any ideas?
  24. Just don't let the kids play fetch with it or the missus. With the best will in the world they will undo months of training in minutes. For example a couple of months ago My missus was telling me how much my big pointer enjoyed playing with one of those squeaky tennis balls !!! Fortunately no harm done but who knows what might have happened
  25. looking good Dave is that a fox red lab in the top photo????!!!
